Book Content Embedded Literacy in the Workplace

Download or read book Content Embedded Literacy in the Workplace written by Paolo Federighi and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of embedded literacy, closely connected to embedded learning on one hand, and training in the workplace on the other, is a central theme for reflection on adult education in Europe and around the world. The Council of Europe indicates knowledge as a pivotal element for the economic and social development of the EU countries and the workplace is an important place for the learning and production of know-how and knowledge. The problem of achieving the competences needed for entering the current labour market concerns a large part of the adult population. And this is where embedded literacy comes in, a topic which the volume tries to deal with from a twofold viewpoint: through theoretical reflection outlining the theme against the development of the European labour market, and reflection on hands-on experiences resulting from a project financed by the European Community called CELiNE, Content Embedded Literacy Education for the New Economy, carried out between 2007-2009.

Book excerpt: This paper argues that adult learning must be embedded in real opportunities to demonstrate knowledge and skill at work, to climb the ladder of learning, and to reap the rewards for doing both. Book A Glance at Work Educational Perspectives

Download or read book A Glance at Work Educational Perspectives written by Vanna Boffo and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topics of work flexibility, precarious jobs, and the relationship between work, the market and production are subjects that are widely debated in the sociological, philosophical, economic and political spheres. Yet these topics are less touched on in the tradition of pedagogical research. The intention of this book is to build a seedbed for reflection on the central position assumed by work in the lives of every woman and man, inhabitants of a planet in which the transformation of work activities is imposing radical changes on lifestyles, community-building and societies. Work is not an abstract concept, but is incorporated into every human person who does it and into the relationships linking them to others. Man, his education and human formation provide the pivot around which to perform a pedagogical survey within the universe of "work", and inside the relationship between the human condition and working/professional life. What sense does work acquire today when going to observe children, young people, adults or migrants? Namely, what sense does it assume when its pivotal viewpoint is shifted off-centre in time and space? The essays intend to spark agile but critical, synchronic and diachronic reflection which, stemming from contextual questions on the meaning of work and on change in the workplace, will proceed to investigate the subjects in their specific lives and existential conditions. Essays by: Vanna Boffo, Pietro Causarano, Giovanna Del Gobbo, Emiliano Macinai, Maria Rita Mancaniello, Stefano Oliviero and Clara Silva.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adult learning is recognized as a key component of lifelong learning and Member States are required to remove barriers to participation, to increase overall quality and efficiency in adult learning, to speed up the process of validation and recognition and to ensure sufficient investment in and monitoring of the field (European Commission, 2006, 2007; European Parliament, 2008; European Council, 2008). Such needs are taken into consideration in this Volume where the main issues faced are related to what 33 European countries have been doing in order to raise the skills levels of low-skilled workers, address the problem of the high number of early school leavers, combat social exclusion, ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, quality of adult learning.

Book Embedding Literacy and Essential Skills Lessons from Our Research

Download or read book Embedding Literacy and Essential Skills Lessons from Our Research written by Diana Twiss and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report (66 pages), from Tracy DeFoe and Diana Twiss, describes the findings from an action research project investigating strategies for developing sustainable, practical workplace literacy programmes. The goal was to find ways to help employers understand that literacy and essential skills should be part of everyday workplace training (instead of one-off or special events). The researchers found that the secret to sustainable programmes is listening to stakeholder needs, understanding the client's business and the environment in which they operate. The researchers summarise the project findings into four lessons: listen and learn, engage people in embedding, embed every which way, and repeat the cycle again. Table of contents: * Lesson one: Listen and learn * Lesson two: Engage people in finding opportunities to embed * Lesson three: Embed every which way (in training materials and methods, in work documents and processes, in communications and display, in normal work life) * Lesson four: Repeat lessons one, two and three * Concluding remarks.

Book Reading and Writing in the Global Workplace

Download or read book Reading and Writing in the Global Workplace written by Beatrice Quarshie Smith and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading and Writing in the Global Workplace: Gender, Literacy, and Outsourcing in Ghana by Beatrice Quarshie Smith explores the conditions that underlie the outsourcing of US data-processing work in Ghana. Here Beatrice Quarshie Smith describes the convergence and interplay of at least four different socio-economic forces: (1) the digital and satellite technology enabling virtual environments for global outsourced data-processing; (2) the historical development of Ghana as a politically-stable Anglophone society with a relatively strong tradition of public education; (3) the neoliberal economic restructuring policies advanced by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund; and (4) the ready availability of women seeking to enter the formal wage economy either to seek independence from their roles within traditional families, or in order to support their families. The author's comparative study of two distinctly different workplaces reveals significant insights about problems of organizational hierarchy and management-employee relations in the cross-cultural environments of out-sourced business and IT process work. Through extensive interviews, the book sheds light on the educational backgrounds, day-to-day struggles, fears, and aspirations of the workers. Quarshie Smith develops this multi-faceted analysis with keen insights into the representational limitations and ethical responsibilities of the researcher. This pioneering study about outsourced data-processing work in West Africa opens up a new area for research and offers a fresh perspective from which to consider outsourcing in other regions of the globe.
