Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and rapid technological development have created the lot of changes in the different sects of human life, including business sector. One of it is that traditional accounting and reporting practices couldn't explain the exact status of the business because of increasing importance of intangible assets rather than tangible. As an evidence for this, researchers have identified the growing disparity between book value and market value of the company. Hence, this paper is an effort to identify the determinant of Intellectual capital disclosure which is firm-specific in Indian context. As far IC concerned, it possesses a vital role because of as said before increasing disparity between market value and book value of companies. Literature are saying IC can explain or at least can reduce this disparity. This study has chosen leading pharmaceutical companies included in Pharma sector. For this study, annual reports of a sample of 10 companies from NSE Pharma Index are analyzed over a three-year period from 2015-2017. Content analysis has been applied to calculate Intellectual Capital Disclosure score and Regression models are used to examine the relationship between IC disclosure and the selected variables. Results reveal that IC disclosure in Indian pharmaceutical sector is increasing year by year. While considering multiple regression analysis, the age of the company and number of independent directors are showing a significant positive relationship with Intellectual Capital disclosure. In other hand, variables such as value added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) and leverage, size of the firm and profitability are showing an insignificant relationship with IC disclosure.

Book Voluntary Reporting of Intellectual Capital

Download or read book Voluntary Reporting of Intellectual Capital written by Madan Lal Bhasin and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: This is an exploratory study, which focuses on two issues: (a) mapping the current state of intellectual capital (IC) reporting scenario, and (b) attempt to measure the value of IC by the selected 8 companies in the Indian pharmaceutical industry during the 5 financial years. Methods: The Modified Intangible Assets Monitor is used to capture the reporting of elements of the IC framework. The technique used for calculation of reporting index is content analysis applying the five-point rating scale. Results: The findings show that, on an average, the sample companies reported a positive value of IC; significant correlation has been noticed between tangible assets (TA) and net operating profits (NOP). However, no significant difference was found between percentage of IC to MV, and per cent of TA to MV. The study finds wide-disparity, low-level, and purely voluntary nature of the ICR made by the selected companies. But as expected, IC reporting are very low and substantially differs across these companies. First three top ICR scorers were: Dr. Reddy's, Aventis Pharma and Aurbindo; they get first, second and third ranks. Conclusion: The IC reporting done by the sample companies does not adequately fulfill the information needs of stakeholders, and hence companies need to report more meaningful information in their annual reports or in separate IC Reports. Furthermore, the above analysis reveals that the IC Reporting among Indian pharmaceutical companies is very low. It is recommend to the international accounting bodies, to take the lead by establishing a harmonized ICR standard, and provide guidance to the big listed.

Download or read book Intellectual Capital Disclosure of Select Pharmaceutical and Software Companies in India written by Mitali Sen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is an attempt to measure and evaluate voluntary Intellectual Capital (IC) disclosures made by Indian pharmaceutical and software companies in their annual report. The research technique called content analysis has been used to measure the extent and nature of disclosure in 24 sample companies across the two industries with the help of certain criteria identified in the form of 18 IC indicators across three broad categories, viz., structural capital elements, relational capital elements and human capital elements. From the study, it can be inferred that most of the reported IC attributes are expressed in discursive rather than numerical or monetary terms. The IC disclosure made by the sample companies does not adequately fulfil the informational needs of stakeholders, and hence companies need to disclose more meaningful information in their annual reports or in separate IC reports.

Book The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry

Download or read book The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry written by Yaeko Mitsumori and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the impact of the revision of the Indian Patent Act (2005) on the Indian pharmaceutical industry, which has been achieving healthy growth over the past 30 to 40 years or more. As of 2005, the Indian pharmaceutical industry was ranked as No. 4 in the world in terms of volume and 15th in terms of value. WTO/TRIPS required India to revise its patent law, however, and to introduce product patents in the pharmaceutical field. Many not only in India but also in the world had argued that the local pharmaceutical industry could deteriorate once a strong patent law (such as a product patent) was introduced. However, the Indian pharmaceutical industry has continued to develop rapidly even after the revision of the patent law in 2005. This present study started with efforts to work out the reason the Indian pharmaceutical industry successfully expanded even after the introduction of product patents. The study found that a unique article (the so-called '3-d‘) inserted in the Patent Act 2005 might have played a role in diminishing or preventing a negative impact from the introduction of a strong patent system, such as a product patents. The study also considers that a change of the business model adopted by the Indian pharmaceutical industry might have contributed to diminishing the effect of the negative impact from the introduction of a strong patent law. This study also covers recent developments in India regarding intellectual property rights and the pharmaceutical industry. One is India’s very first compulsory license granted to an Indian pharmaceutical company, Natco, against the large German pharmaceutical firm Bayer; and the second is the Supreme Court decision on Novartis’ Gleevec. The study analyzes the fundamental problems that caused these two events: access to medicine and gaps in the concept of intellectual property in the pharmaceutical industry. As possible solutions to these fundamental issues, this book explores the ideas of voluntary licensing and tiered pricing.

Book Intellectual Capital Reporting Practices

Download or read book Intellectual Capital Reporting Practices written by Madan Lal Bhasin and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Knowledge' being the new engine of corporate development has become one of the great clichés of recent years. Knowledge, innovation, information-technology, and people are the key contributories in the future of any organization, and IC is the driver of market value in the knowledge economy. Intangibles and how they contribute to value creation have to be appreciated so that the appropriate decisions can be made to protect and enhance them. There must also be a credible way of reporting those intangibles to the market to give the investors comprehensive information to assist in valuing the company more accurately. At present, reporting of IC information across the globe is done by very few leading companies, purely on a 'voluntary' basis. Unfortunately, the omission of IC information may adversely influence the quality of decisions made by shareholders, or lead to material misstatements. This study attempts to provide an insight into the style of IC reporting done by the top IT-sector corporations from 'India' and 'Australia'. In order to survey the recent IC reporting practices, we conducted a 'comparative' study of 16 Indian and 20 Australian companies in which the 'content analysis' was performed on their annual reports. The results of this study confirmed that 'IC reporting by the companies from India and Australia are found to be low, mostly reported in a narrative form, and IC reporting had not received any preference from the mentors of these corporations.' A major recommendation for corporations is to develop strategic and tactical initiatives that provide for 'voluntary' disclosing of IC. These initiatives may initially be used for internal management purposes, but an external stakeholder-focus IC report should be the ultimate long-run goal.

Book Making Sense of Intellectual Capital

Download or read book Making Sense of Intellectual Capital written by Daniel Andriessen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-02-18 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Drucker has introduced us all to the knowledge era, where knowledge is the primary resource and intangibles (intellectual capital resources and assets) are now largely recognized as the most important sources of organizations' competitive advantage. With the recognition of the importance of Intangibles comes the problem of how to properly identify them and assign them a value within the corporation. This is an area of concern in 5 fields: 1) accounting and financial reporting, 2) performance measurement and management, 3) valuation in the finance field, 4) the Human Resources field in terms of management, strategy, and planning, and 5) Intellectual Capital. Over the past eight years, over 25 methods have been proposed for the valuation of intangibles coming out of these 5 fields. In this book, Andriessen evaluates 25 existing methods of intangible valuation according to highly developed criteria. In performing his evaluations, Andriessen synthesizes the state of the art research from these fields based on extensive research. He then presents his own method for valuing intangibles, which he began developing and testing as a Senior Manager at KPMG Knowledge Advisory Services in The Netherlands. He relates six case studies in which this method was tested in actual companies, carefully reviews the results of his tests, and then concludes by offering a new and improved method for valuing intangibles in his Weightless Wealth Toolkit, a complete step-by-step process for identifying, valuing, and managing Intangibles to help managers operate successfully in the Intangible Economy.

Book Intellectual Capital Reporting Approaches to Data Collection and Content Method

Download or read book Intellectual Capital Reporting Approaches to Data Collection and Content Method written by Richard Petty and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, researchers in the field of Intellectual capital (IC) need to be able to justify the specific research methods they use in the collection of the empirical data that they examine to support opinions regarding the merit of different approaches to managing and reporting Intellectual Capital. Of the various methods available to researchers seeking to understand Intellectual Capital Reporting (ICR), content analysis has proven a popular choice. The aim of this paper is to review the use of content analysis in understanding ICR and to offer some observations on the practical utility of the method. We further examine several research method issues relating to the use of content analysis that have been discussed in the Social Environmental Accounting (SAE) literature, but not as yet in the Intellectual Capital literature, which we believe are relevant to investigations underway in the field of Intellectual Capital Reporting. This paper reports on several developmental issues that we have confronted when using content analysis to examine the voluntary disclosure of Intellectual Capital items by various organisations in their annual reports. The paper also suggests two theoretical foundations for further investigation into the voluntary disclosure of Intellectual Capital by organisations and suggests why content analysis is well matched to both theories as a tool with which to collect the data to test likely research propositions.
