Book Retelling the Past in Contemporary Greek Literature Film and Popular Culture

Download or read book Retelling the Past in Contemporary Greek Literature Film and Popular Culture written by Trine Stauning Willert and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with historical consciousness and its artistic expressions in contemporary Greece since 1989 from the point of view that contemporary Greeks have been faced with the contradictions between on the one hand a glorious, world-famous yet distant past and, on the other, a traumatic contemporary history of wars, expulsions, civil strife and political and economic crises. Such clashes of imaginary identifications and collective traumas call for interpretations not only from historians but also from artists and storytellers. Therefore, the chapters in this volume explore the ways in which sensitive and creative perspectives of art approach and appropriate history in Greece. Through a rich collection of analytical case studies and creative reflections on Greece’s past, present, and future this volume presents the reader with the ways a set of contemporary Greek storytellers in different genres have incorporated previously under-explored or little-known themes, events, and epochs in modern Greek history showing how the past, by being interpreted and represented in the present, can teach us a lot about contemporary Greek society. The themes that form the point of departure for the stories told or retold cover various significant components of Greek history and culture such as ancient myths, the Ottoman period, the Greek War of Independence and the Greek Civil War, but also less prominent or known aspects of Greek history such as the Greek Enlightenment, the long and tragic history of Greek Jewry, and migration to and from Greece.

Book excerpt: John Boardman has updated his classic account of one of the most popular historic artistic traditions among Western audiences. In the twenty years since the last edition was released, valuable evidence has come to light which has dramatically enhanced our understanding of the art of this ancient civilization. We now know conclusively that Greeks in fact lavished their sculptures with realistic colour paint, and also worked with a wealth of other materials on a major scale, including wood and precious metals, proving that our view of classic pure white marble of the age is a Renaissance construction. We can identify the work of individual artists, and schools of artists, and have a clearer picture than ever of how art and artistic ideas travelled throughout the Greek world. Boardman encourages the reader to consider the beautiful pieces that have been preserved in their original context, rather than as the isolated installations of our modern galleries, weaving into the discussion of the art objects insights into the society that produced them.

Book excerpt: Each Monograph is an enlargement from BRITISH DOGS, giving such additional matter as the modern fancier requires, but which is outside the scheme of the comprehensive work, witten for the lover of the dog in general, who does not seek for the completeness of detail which the specialist demands. The cultivation of the dog in generd, and especially in the direction of a clearer separation of distinct varieties, has been greatly stimulated by our competitive exhibitions, and the consequent increased demand, at home and abroad, for pure bred specimens. This is strongly exemplified in the large and increasing number of special clubs, each devoted to the interests of one particular breed, and which authoritatively defines tho standard of excellence by which it shall be judged. These circumstances seemed to demand the present series of Monographs, which are designed to serve the particular interest of each fancier. It will be found that the club standard-where such exists-has been given due weight and prominence to and as I ham, in many instances, received the cordial and much valued assistance of gentlemen accepted as high authorities on their special breeds, I hope the result of these co-operative efforts will prove acceptable and useful to those for whom they have been made...

Book Ancient Greek Painting and Its Echoes in Later Art

Download or read book Ancient Greek Painting and Its Echoes in Later Art written by Stelios Lydakēs and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his introduction, Stelios Lydakis notes, "It would be impossible for an art historian to study the works of antiquity without extensive reference to their influence on the art of the centuries that followed." Lydakis provides a complete history of ancient Greek painting from the earliest examples in Crete, Thera, and Mycenae to those of the classical and Roman epochs. Through a multitude of examples, he shows how these ancient works shaped modern ones. The literary references he considers include the works of Lucian, Philostratos, Pausanias, and Pliny the Elder. The works of art reproduced include wall paintings from the Palace of Knossos, Thera, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Oplontis; vases from the Mycenaean through the Classical periods; reliefs from the Parthenon; and mosaics from Pompeii and Delos. The book also features paintings made in later centuries by such artists as Mantegna, Titian, Dürer, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens that were inspired by antique models.
