Book English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Literature Classic Reprint written by John Calvin Metcalf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature The writer of this volume has tried to furnish students and general readers with a clear and concise account of English literature and its makers from the beginnings to the present day. The influences of social and other movements on literary develop ment have been brought out in the brief introductions to the chapters. The biographies set forth the important facts of the authors' careers without extensive comment. This is in accord with the present writer's conviction that much ready-made inter pretation of conditions and motives, after the setting of an author's work and his characteristics have been made clear, is a hindrance rather than a help to students. Since literature is in a peculiar sense an expression of personality, an attempt has been made to sum up the personal traits of each prominent author in a para. Graph or two. Wherever an author's contribution has proved epoch-making in literary history, that fact is given special promi nence in a final summary. Download or read book The Masters of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Stephen Gwynn and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Masters of English Literature Some explanation is needed to account for the appearance of this book, in a period which sets so much value on specialised study. The writer would justify it by the view, first, that in English literature there are certain authors who may be classed as obligatory - concerning whom total ignorance is a defect at least to be concealed; and secondly, that the ordinary reader has neither the time nor inclination to study all these authors at first hand. An attempt has therefore been made to put together a survey of the literature which should concern itself only with such authors as can be deemed in this manner essential; with the hope that it might usefully supplement the necessarily partial knowledge possessed by young or busy people, and perhaps serve as a guide to those who wish to extend their reading. The main criterion which has regulated the selection of names is public fame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. Download or read book The Making of English Literature Classic Reprint written by William Henry Crawshaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of English Literature Each chapter marks a chronological advance on the preceding chapter, except in the last book. There, for reasons suggested in the text, the three chapters deal with three separate departments of the literature of a single period - prose, the novel, and poetry. The titles of the various books and chapters are in harmony With the pur pose to make the volume a discussion of literature and literary movements rather than of general English history. Various helps to more extended study are given in an Appendix, where they may be easily referred to in con nection with the treatment of each period, but where they will not interfere with the continuous reading of the text. Book A Short History of Modern English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of Modern English Literature Classic Reprint written by Edmund Gosse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Modern English Literature The great pressure upon space has been relieved by dividing the history of English literature into two por tions. If this series continues to receive the support of the public, it is hoped that a volume on the archaic section may bring the story down from the earliest times to Robert of Brunne and Laurence Minot. In my first three chapters I have further lightened my labour by leaving out of consideration what was written in this country in Latin or French, for, although this may be material in dealing with thought in England, it can have but a small connection with the history of expression in the English language. I make no apology for the prominence given throughout to the art of poetry, for it is in verse that style can most definitely and to greatest advantage be studied, especially in a literature like ours, where prose has mainly been written without any other aim than the naive transference of ideas or statement of facts, like the prose of M. Jourdain, while our national poetry, which is one of our main national glories, has been a consecutive chain of consciously elaborated masterpieces. Book Pen Pencil and Poison

Download or read book Pen Pencil and Poison written by Oscar Wilde and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

Book The Beginnings of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Beginnings of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Charlton M. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of English Literature The only satisfactory way to teach English literature to beginners is to put the literature itself in their hands, and try to aid them in getting an intelligent appreciation of it. The study of literary evolutions is important even at first, but only in so far as it is an aid to such appreciation. It is especially desirable that the student should not think of the study of the poets, for example, as consisting chiefly in the study of what other people have written about them. Yet it is hardly practicable to dispense with the textbook altogether. The earliest authors that have usually been read by the under-classmen in Yale College, for example, are Spenser and Shakespeare. The writers who cannot be enjoyed without some preliminary linguistic study have been reserved for a later place in the curriculum; but ever Spenser and Shakespeare, and their period, can best be taken up after at least a slight knowledge of the earlier history of our literature has been acquired. This book has been written to supply what the author's experience has shown to be a real need. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Story of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Anna Jane Buckland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of English Literature The earliest literature of this country was not written by the English people. Before our forefathers came over from the north of Germany, there was a people living in this island called the Kelts; and the remains of this race are still dwelling amongst us in the north of Scotland, in Ireland, and in Wales. The Kelts were divided into two great families - the Gaels, whose descendants are living in the Highlands and in Ireland, and the Cymri, who were the forefathers of the Welsh. All the Kelts have much power of imagination, and a keen sense of what is beautiful both in nature and life; they have quick feelings also, which are easily stirred to strong emotion, though there is a difference between the Gael and the Cymri in this respect, for while the Gael like to be moved to laughter and joy by what is lively and bright, the Cymri love to be touched to tears by what is pathetic and mournful; but both the Gael and the Cymri are readily stirred to intense enthusiasm by a heroic story of brave deeds and resolute conflict. If we were asked, what form of literature would such a race produce? we might answer at once - poetry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by William Allan Neilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature A manual has been prepared which discusses the general problems of teaching literature and supplies for each chapter a large amount of additional material and suggestions for the teacher. This separate publication makes it possible to address every word in the textbook itself to the pupil. Two suggestions to the teacher, duly emphasized in the man ual, may be barely noted here. First, the teacher should give special aid to the pupil on the Opening chapters, which survey periods remote and therefore difficult for the modern reader. The first two chapters might well be studied in the class under the teacher's guidance. Second, the teacher should never separate the study of the textbook from the study of literature itself. The book strives to guide the pupils to an interested reading of the best poetry and prose. This should also be the chief aim of the teacher. Download or read book The Tutorial History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by A. J. Wyatt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tutorial History of English Literature The common complaint against smaller text-books of literature is that they include too much, and fail to pre serve due proportion between the greater and the lesser writers. In this book the lesser writers are mentioned, if at all, only incidentally; and the attempt has been made, in passing from one great writer to another, to give the history, as distinguished from the mere story, of English literature - to lay bare some of the more important aspects of the work of each author selected, while tracing the lines of development from writer to writer - in a word, to make an elementary book scientific, as far as the methods of science are applicable. In this task I have had no model before me to improve upon, and am more painfully aware, than any friendly reader or critic can be, of Shortcomings in its execution. In particular I have felt the difficulty of being consistent in difficulty: of avoiding the Opposite dangers of 'talking over people's heads' and childish simplicity. The former danger may be largely obviated if the student, before perusing each chapter, will read the English Classics recommended on. Book The Nightingale Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nightingale Being A story for children and A parable for men and women. N china, you must know, the Emperor is a Chinaman, and all whom he has about him are I Chinamen too. It happened a good many years ago, but that's just why it's worth while to hear the story before it's forgotten! The Emperor's Palace was the most splendid in the World; it was made entire ly of porcelain, very costly, but so delicate and brittle that one had to take care how one touched it. In the Garden were to be seen the most wonderful owers, and to the costliest of them silver bells were tied, which sounded, so that nobody should pass by without noticing the owers. Yes, every thing in the Emperor's Garden was admirably arranged. And it extended so far, that the Gardener himself did not know where the end was. If a man went on and on, he came into a glorious forest with high trees and deep lakes. The wood extended straight down to the sea, which was blue and deep; great vessels could sail beneath the branches of the trees, and in the trees lived a Nightingale, which sang so splendidly that even the poor Fisherman, who had many other things to do, stopped still and listened, when he had gone out at night to throw out his nets, and heard the N ightin gale. How beautiful that is! He said; but he was obliged to attend to his property and thus forgot the bird. But when in the next night, the bird sang again and the Fisherman heard it, he exclaimed again, H ow beautiful that is!tin at? From all the countries of the World, Travellers came to the City of the Emperor and admired it, and the Pal ace and the Garden, but when they heard the song of the Nightingale, they said: That is the best of all! And the Travellers told of it when they came home; and the learned men wrote many books about the Town, the Palace, and the Garden. But they did not forget the Nightingale; that was placed highest of all; and those who were Poets wrote most magnificent poems about the Nightingale in the wood, by the deep lake. The books went through all the World; and a few of them once came to the Emperor. He sat in his golden chair, and read, and read; every moment he nodded his head, for it pleased him to peruse the masterly descriptions of the City, the Palace, and the Garden. But the N i ghtin gale is the best of all it stood written there. What's that? Exclaimed the Emperor. I do not know the Nightingale at all! Is there such a bird in my Garden? I've never heard of that: to learn such a thing for the first time from books! And hereupon he called his Cavalier. This Cavalier was so grand that if any one lower in rank than himself dared to speak to him, or to ask him any question, he answered nothing but P! And that meant nothing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
