Like the landscape, the linguistic situation has also undergone major changes. In Holland, an early form of Frisian was spoken until, very roughly, 1100, and in parts of North Holland it disappeared even later. The hunt for traces of Frisian or Ingvaeonic in the dialects of the western Low Countries has been going on for around 150 years, but a synthesis of the available evidence has never appeared. The main aim of this book is to fill that gap. It follows the lead of many recent studies on the nature and effects of language contact situations in the past. The topic is approached from two different angles: Dutch dialectology, in all its geographic and diachronic variation, and comparative Germanic linguistics. At the same time, it bundles contributions of almost all the HLT research groups in Flanders and the Netherlands, hence offers a view of their recent research activities. Book excerpt: The language of some eighteen million people living at the junction of the two great cultures of western Europe, Romance and Germanic, is now taught by some 262 teachers at I43 universities outside the Netherlands, ineluding Finland, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Czecho slovakia, Portugal, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. These teachers obviously need to keep in regular and elose touch with the two countries whose culturallife forms the subject of their courses. Yet the first international congress of Dutch teachers abroad did not take place until the early sixties, since when the Colloquium Neerlandicum has become a triennial event, meeting alternately in the Netherlands and Belgium, in The Hague (I96I and I967), Brussels (I964) Ghent (I970) with the fifth Colloquium planned for Leiden in I973. Financial support from the Dutch and Belgian governments enables the majority of European colleagues, and a number of those from other continents, to attend a conference lasting for four or five days and ineluding discussions of the problems involved in teaching Dutch abroad and papers on various aspects of current Dutch studies of interest to those who are working in a certain degree of isolation abroad. At the first Colloquium a Working Committee of Professors and Lecturers in Dutch studies at Universities abroad was set up.

Scott offers an account of the tension that exists between morphosyntactic change and codification, focusing on the effect that codification has had on the genitive case and alternative constructions in both languages. On the basis of usage data from a wide variety of registers, from the 16th century to the present day, Alan K. Scott demonstrates that codification has preserved obsolescent morphological genitive constructions in Dutch and German while suppressing their potential replacements, and shows that, despite its association with norm-conformant language, the genitive is used to a surprisingly large extent in informal early modern Dutch and modern German sources.
