Download or read book Ecological Statistics written by Gordon A. Fox and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application and interpretation of statistics are central to ecological study and practice. Ecologists are now asking more sophisticated questions than in the past. These new questions, together with the continued growth of computing power and the availability of new software, have created a new generation of statistical techniques. These have resulted in major recent developments in both our understanding and practice of ecological statistics. This novel book synthesizes a number of these changes, addressing key approaches and issues that tend to be overlooked in other books such as missing/censored data, correlation structure of data, heterogeneous data, and complex causal relationships. These issues characterize a large proportion of ecological data, but most ecologists' training in traditional statistics simply does not provide them with adequate preparation to handle the associated challenges. Uniquely, Ecological Statistics highlights the underlying links among many statistical approaches that attempt to tackle these issues. In particular, it gives readers an introduction to approaches to inference, likelihoods, generalized linear (mixed) models, spatially or phylogenetically-structured data, and data synthesis, with a strong emphasis on conceptual understanding and subsequent application to data analysis. Written by a team of practicing ecologists, mathematical explanations have been kept to the minimum necessary. This user-friendly textbook will be suitable for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of ecology, evolution, environmental studies, and computational biology who are interested in updating their statistical tool kits. A companion web site provides example data sets and commented code in the R language.

Book Recent Developments on Structural Equation Models

Download or read book Recent Developments on Structural Equation Models written by Kees van Montfort and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-03-31 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Karl Jöreskog's first presentation in 1970, Structural Equation Modelling or SEM has become a main statistical tool in many fields of science. It is the standard approach of factor analytic and causal modelling in such diverse fields as sociology, education, psychology, economics, management and medical sciences. In addition to an extension of its application area, Structural Equation Modelling also features a continual renewal and extension of its theoretical background. The sixteen contributions to this book, written by experts from many countries, present important new developments and interesting applications in Structural Equation Modelling. The book addresses methodologists and statisticians professionally dealing with Structural Equation Modelling to enhance their knowledge of the type of models covered and the technical problems involved in their formulation. In addition, the book offers applied researchers new ideas about the use of Structural Equation Modeling in solving their problems. Finally, methodologists, mathematicians and applied researchers alike are addressed, who simply want to update their knowledge of recent approaches in data analysis and mathematical modelling.

Book Essentials of Statistical Inference

Download or read book Essentials of Statistical Inference written by G. A. Young and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics and related disciplines, this book presents the concepts and results underlying the Bayesian, frequentist and Fisherian approaches, with particular emphasis on the contrasts between them. Computational ideas are explained, as well as basic mathematical theory. Written in a lucid and informal style, this concise text provides both basic material on the main approaches to inference, as well as more advanced material on developments in statistical theory, including: material on Bayesian computation, such as MCMC, higher-order likelihood theory, predictive inference, bootstrap methods and conditional inference. It contains numerous extended examples of the application of formal inference techniques to real data, as well as historical commentary on the development of the subject. Throughout, the text concentrates on concepts, rather than mathematical detail, while maintaining appropriate levels of formality. Each chapter ends with a set of accessible problems.

Download or read book Conference on Statistical Science Honouring the Bicentennial of Stefano Franscini s Birth written by Carlo Malaguerra and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on "Statistical Science", held in Monte Verita (Switzerland) on 18/20 November 1996, was intended to honour the memory of Stefano Franscini at the occasion of the bicentennial of his birth (1796-1996). It was jointly organized by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office and the University of Geneva. These proceedings gather a selected collection of contributions presented by statisticians from universities, research institutes and national statistical services of Europe, North America and Asia. Part I focuses on a historical appreciation of Stefano Franscini's life and work. Authors develop a deep analysis of the historical context, the political action, the scientific achievement and the intellectual legacy of the founding father of Swiss official statistics. The reader thus has an opportunity to appreciate the various facets of this exceptional man who not only drew the first comprehensive statistical portrait of Switzerland but also established the foundations for modem educational and political institutions. Part II groups papers on the relationship between statistical science and official statistics. Authors analyse the historical background, current context and new perspectives of co-operation between scientific research and official statistical services. They show how the relationship between both partners has evolved over the past decades, stressing certain prerequisites and opportunities for effective of rigourous interaction between academia's scientific activity and the production statistical information.

Book Recent Developments in Modeling and Applications in Statistics

Download or read book Recent Developments in Modeling and Applications in Statistics written by Paulo Eduardo Oliveira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics has been a main tool in almost every field of activity and an essential part of applied scientific work, supporting conclusions and offering insights into new uses for established methodologies, thus making it a valuable resource in looking for faceless facts. Model construction describing populations or phenomena subject to randomness use a wide range of methods. Data collection provides the basis for modelling and assumption verification. Modelling must be conducted using suitable techniques that give researchers the means to search for hidden facts or behaviours. This may be addressed by fitting pre-defined shapes and distributions to the data or by allowing the data to reveal its intrinsic properties by using nonparametric methods. This volume contains a selection of contributions presented at the XVIII Annual Congress of the Portuguese Statistical Society.
