Book Contemporary American Philosophy Vol 1

Download or read book Contemporary American Philosophy Vol 1 written by G. H. Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary American Philosophy, Vol. 1: Personal Statements Plans for bringing out one or two volumes Of Contemporary American Philosophy were suggested and definitely set in motion shortly after the publication, in 1924, of the first volume of Contemporary British Philosophy. The project was entrusted to a committee of the American Philosophical Association, made up of three Divisional Committees, of the Eastern, Western, and Pacific Divisions of the Association, whose chairmen were to act as the American Editors of the volumes. The contributors to the volumes were selected on the basis of a referendum vote of the membership Of the three Divisions of the American Philosophical Association. The Editors regret that either through the more or less accidental omissions in this hastily taken referendum or through sudden illness, as in the case of Professor Addison Moore, a number of colleagues whose essays would have been greatly valued are not here represented. Each contributor was requested to state his principal philosophic beliefs, the reasons supporting them, and the manner in which he had reached them. It is hoped that the publication Of these philosophic autobiographies will serve the purpose of clarifying the minds Of the writers, and of helping their students to a better understanding of their various specific doctrines. An explicit confession of the temperamental sympathies and prejudices of a philosopher, and Of such Of his life's circumstances as seem to him to have been relevant in Shaping his conclusions, may possess as much philosophic value both to the writer and to his readers as the conclusions to which they contribute. And the honest attempt to psycho-analyse one's mind may and should result in a wholesomely humiliating realization of the extent to which one's own beliefs (and not merely those of one's neighbours) are determined by subjective causes rather than by Objective reasons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Philosophy offers the first historically framed introduction to the tradition of American philosophy and its contemporary engagement with the world. Born out of the social and political turmoil of the Civil War, American philosophy was a means of dealing with conflict and change. In the turbulence of the 21st century, this remains as relevant as ever. Placing the work of present-day American philosophers in the context of a history of resistance, through a philosophical tradition marked by a commitment to pluralism, fallibilism and liberation, this book tells the story of a philosophy shaped by major events that call for reflection and illustrates the ways in which philosophy is relevant to lived experience. This book presents a survey of the historical development of American philosophy, as well as coverage of key contemporary issues in America including race theory, feminism, indigenous peoples, and environmentalism and is the ideal introduction to the work of the major American thinkers, past and present, and the sheer breadth of their ideas and influence.

Book A History of American Philosophy

Download or read book A History of American Philosophy written by Herbert Wallace Schneider and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1946 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work treats of several aspects of American philosophy in their historical perspective. The author has interpreted philosophically the revolutionary changes that recent years have brought in the domain of education, church, politics, natural sciences etc. The reader will find herein that American Philosophy is the outgrowth of impacts of new life and new directions imported by waves of immigration. More conspicuous are the recent intellectual imports from Cambridge, Paris and Vienna. The philosophical analysis that grew up in Cambridge under the leadership of Whitehead, russel and Moore, the sophisticated, modernized versions of Catholic scholasticism from Paris and the the schools of value theory, existentialism, phenomenology, logical positivism, psychoanalysis, and socialism from Vienna--these are now pervasive forces in American culture. The author has ventured to predict that the types of philosophical thought described in this volume are being radically revised, reviewed and reconstructed because of these new importations that a decidedly new chapter in American philosophy is being written. The author has tried well to expound what American history teaches or what American philosophy stands for.

Book Frontiers in American Philosophy

Download or read book Frontiers in American Philosophy written by Robert W. Burch and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To push the edges of the known, to look at the accepted in novel ways, is indeed to stand at the frontiers of a field. In Frontiers in American Philosophy thirty-five contemporary scholars explore classical American thought in bold new ways. An extraordinary range of issues and thinkers is represented in these pages--from such core themes as metaphysics and social philosophy, which receive primary attention, to some consideration of American philosophers' technical accomplishments in mathematical logic and philosophical analysis. The authors also offer new perspectives on the work of the leading American philosophers, including George Herbert Mead, William James, John Dewey, Charles Sanders Peirce, and Emma Goldman. Not surprisingly perhaps, a great deal of the discussion revolves, either directly or indirectly, around that great axis of intellectual issues commonly known as the "realism/idealism" controversy. It seems fitting that so much attention is devoted to the possibility of some sort of middle position between "external realism" and its antipode in some form of relativistic subjectivism. For, in the last analysis, such a middle position is for the American philosophers the core meaning of "pragmatism.”
