Book George Chastelain and the Shaping of Valois Burgundy

Download or read book George Chastelain and the Shaping of Valois Burgundy written by Graeme Small and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1997 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few texts offer as many insights into the history of Valois Burgundy as the work of George Chastelain (c.1414-1475), official chronicler to the dukes Philip the Good and Charles the Bold. Chastelain, a trusted courtier, closely observed his masters' authority in the many dominions they ruled in the Low Countries and France, and the role they played in the political life of neighbouring kingdoms and principalities and in Christendom as a whole. This is the first historical study of Chastelain in over half a century. An account of his life and career is followed by a study of the chronicle, Chastelain's interpretation within it of ducal actions and aspirations, and the role it played in the historical culture of the governing classes in the Netherlands after the death of the last duke in 1477. Overall, Dr Small offers a complete reappraisal of the political ambitions of the ducal elite, particularly with regard to the supposed evolution of the ducal dominions into a `Burgundian state' quite distinct from the Kingdom of France. Dr GRAEME SMALL is lecturer in medieval history, University of Glasgow.

Book Journals of Brother Roger of Taiz Volume 2

Download or read book Journals of Brother Roger of Taiz Volume 2 written by Brother Roger of Taize and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the personal journals of Roger Schutz-Marsauche (1915-2005), known as Brother Roger, the founder and first prior of the Taize Community in France, an ecumenical monastic community that strives to live as a "parable of community" in a divided world. Taize is known especially for its music and contemplative style of worship, and as a place where tens of thousands of young Christians flock each year to spend a time of prayer and reflection. This volume covers the years from 1969 to 1972 and is centered on the genesis and first preparations of a "Council of Youth." The project was inspired by the crisis in the Catholic Church in the wake of the Second Vatican Council, and the slowdown of ecumenism after the glowing hopes kindled in the wake of the Council. It was an attempt to take seriously the aspirations of the younger generation and orient them in a positive direction. Brother Roger also talks in these pages about the ongoing life of the community, his personal spiritual journey, and many important encounters that took place in those eventful years.

Book The Topkap Qur n Manuscript H S 32

Download or read book The Topkap Qur n Manuscript H S 32 written by Rami Hussein Halaseh and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a comprehensive and systematic examination of a revered Qurʾān manuscript, commonly attributed to the third Islamic Caliph, ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān (d. 35/656), housed at the Topkapı Palace Museum in Istanbul, Türkiye (identified as H.S. 32). Halaseh offers a meticulous analysis of the manuscript’s codicological, paleographic, and orthographic characteristics, explores its emendations, production date, and traces the manuscript’s journey first to Cairo and then to Istanbul. Additionally, the study examines and categorizes its textual variants, including what are considered today as non-canonical and some that are not previously attested in the major qirāʾāt literature. This work not only sheds light on the transmission of the Qurʾānic text but also establishes a comprehensive framework for researching Qurʾān manuscripts. By integrating methods for examining these manuscripts as both physical artifacts and scriptural texts, Halaseh presents a holistic methodological approach to their scholarly study.

Book Ovid in the Age of Cervantes

Download or read book Ovid in the Age of Cervantes written by Frederick A. De Armas and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman poet Ovid, author of the famous Metamorphoses, is widely considered one of the canonical poets of Latin antiquity. Vastly popular in Europe during the Renaissance and Early Modern periods, Ovid's writings influenced the literature, art, and culture in Spain's Golden Age. The book begins with examinations of the translation and utilization of Ovid's texts from the Middle Ages to the Age of Cervantes. The work includes a section devoted to the influence of Ovid on Cervantes, arguing that Don Quixote is a deeply Ovidian text, drawing upon many classical myths and themes. The contributors then turn to specific myths in Ovid as they were absorbed and transformed by different writers, including that of Echo and Narcissus in Garcilaso de la Vega and Hermaphroditus in Covarrubias and Moya. The final section of the book centers on questions of poetic fame and self-fashioning. Ovid in the Age of Cervantes is an important and comprehensive re-evaluation of Ovid's impact on Renaissance and Early Modern Spain.
