Book excerpt: The general practices related to church funding aren’t producing the same results they have in the past. There is a general acceptance that something has changed but little talk or interest is coming from traditional church leader training sources such as denominational entities and seminaries. Pastors are largely left to their own devices to “figure this out.” They need a lifeline. While some churches are experiencing exponential growth, some churches - despite their best efforts - have been unsuccessful at moving beyond survival mode. Coupled with increased competition from other nonprofits and a decline in the commitment to give to the church first, churches risk losing the funding they need. A growing number of leaders are beginning to discover there is another way and are struggling to understand what makes one church generous and another not. There is a need in the market to offer a simple, working definition of “generosity” and reveal the “secrets” some church leaders seem to have simply stumbled upon which are resulting in unexplainable ministry growth and unprecedented church funding even in the midst of tough economic times. The content of this material was developed and refined by Jim Sheppard and Chris Willard through years of ministry leadership in the local church, consulting with church leaders across a broad spectrum of church settings, and through participation in and leadership of the Generous Church Leadership Community facilitated by Leadership Network. Of particular benefit will be the collection of observations and best practices gleaned during the Generous Church Leadership Community that originated within real-life church leadership situations and scenarios by highlighting specific challenges, methods, and successes.

Download or read book Inspiring Generosity written by Barbara Bonner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspiring stories and beautifully typeset quotations about generosity. WARNING: This book might change your life. The desire to act generously arrives like an uninvited guest, unexpectedly, like a lightning bolt, in a mere moment. A gesture, a news story, a quotation in a book, a passing remark can change everything. For many, that moment is enough for generosity to move into their hearts and minds and become central to their lives. This book will help readers open their hearts to the power of their own innate generosity, their desire to make a difference in the world, to help make someone's day a little brighter or their world a bit more secure. It will kindle a spark in readers' hearts that moves them into the sunshine of a more generous life. If one life is more generous, we all prosper. That is one of generosity's most wonderful qualities: it is utterly contagious. Inspiring Generosity is an invitation to savor a sampling of the very best inspirations on the subject of generosity. It includes fourteen contemporary stories of "generosity heroes" whose lives have been transformed by the power of generosity. Sprinkled throughout these stories are writings, poems, and quotes from Shakespeare, Hafiz, Emily Dickinson, George Eliot, Wendell Berry, Sharon Olds, Naomi Shibab Nye, Donald Justice, Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa, Maya Angelou, Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., John Steinbeck, James Joyce, Leo Tolstoy, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Goethe, Seneca, Albert Schweitzer, Anne Frank, and many others.

Book Contagious Disciple Making

Download or read book Contagious Disciple Making written by David Watson and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hard to deny that todayÆs world can seem apathetic toward Christians. Some may look down at their iPhones when we mention God, motion for the check when we bring up church, or casually change the subject when we talk about prayer. In a world full of people whose indifference is greater than their desire to know Christ, how can we dream of growing the church? In Contagious Disciple Making, David Watson and Paul Watson map out a simple method that has sparked an explosion of homegrown churches in the United States and around the world. A companion to Cityteam's two previous books, Miraculous Movements and The Father Glorified, Contagious Disciple Making details the method used by Cityteam disciple-makers. This distinctive process focuses on equipping spiritual leaders in communities where churches are planted. Unlike many evangelism and church-growth products that focus on quick results, contagious disciple-making takes time to cultivate spiritual leadership, resulting in lasting disciple-making movements. Through Contagious Disciple Making readers will come to understand that a strong and equipped leader will continue to grow the church long after church planters move on to the next church. Features include: Engagement tools for use in the field Practical techniques to equip others to make disciples

Book excerpt: Generosity: The Righteous Path to Divine Blessing answers the question of why so many Christians cheat themselves out of God's blessing on their lives by being so stingy with their money? Why is it that the average Christian gives less than 3% of his income to religious and humanitarian causes? Why is it that the average Jewish person gives more than twice as much of his financial increase to charity as the average Christian does? The answers will probably surprise--and may well shock--you! God has set out a righteous path to divine blessing that anyone can walk. This is the narrow way of generosity, the gift of giving that every Christian should manifest continually. It's really quite simple when you choose to do what Jesus said, "Give and you shall receive." Here are some of the challenging and inspiring truths that Generosity: The Righteous Path to Divine Blessing will confirm for you: The Motive for Generosity, The Medium of Generosity, Treasure in the Bank of Heaven, Wealth and the Kingdom of God, Poverty Gospel/Prosperity Gospel, The Blessing of Health and Prosperity. As you read this volume, you will be reconnected with the Hebraic foundations of the Christian faith as they relate to the subjects of money, giving, health, and prosperity. You will be amazed as you discover the secure, balanced positions that God's Word has always taught on these important subjects. Then you will have the freedom to give joyfully and to receive abundantly God's promised provisions of health and prosperity. Get ready for a revolution in your life--and an amazing blessing when you learn to do God's thing God's way.

Book Dare to Lead

Download or read book Dare to Lead written by Brené Brown and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Brené Brown has taught us what it means to dare greatly, rise strong, and brave the wilderness. Now, based on new research conducted with leaders, change makers, and culture shifters, she’s showing us how to put those ideas into practice so we can step up and lead. Don’t miss the five-part HBO Max docuseries Brené Brown: Atlas of the Heart! NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BLOOMBERG Leadership is not about titles, status, and wielding power. A leader is anyone who takes responsibility for recognizing the potential in people and ideas, and has the courage to develop that potential. When we dare to lead, we don’t pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don’t see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it with others. We don’t avoid difficult conversations and situations; we lean into vulnerability when it’s necessary to do good work. But daring leadership in a culture defined by scarcity, fear, and uncertainty requires skill-building around traits that are deeply and uniquely human. The irony is that we’re choosing not to invest in developing the hearts and minds of leaders at the exact same time as we’re scrambling to figure out what we have to offer that machines and AI can’t do better and faster. What can we do better? Empathy, connection, and courage, to start. Four-time #1 New York Times bestselling author Brené Brown has spent the past two decades studying the emotions and experiences that give meaning to our lives, and the past seven years working with transformative leaders and teams spanning the globe. She found that leaders in organizations ranging from small entrepreneurial startups and family-owned businesses to nonprofits, civic organizations, and Fortune 50 companies all ask the same question: How do you cultivate braver, more daring leaders, and how do you embed the value of courage in your culture? In this new book, Brown uses research, stories, and examples to answer these questions in the no-BS style that millions of readers have come to expect and love. Brown writes, “One of the most important findings of my career is that daring leadership is a collection of four skill sets that are 100 percent teachable, observable, and measurable. It’s learning and unlearning that requires brave work, tough conversations, and showing up with your whole heart. Easy? No. Because choosing courage over comfort is not always our default. Worth it? Always. We want to be brave with our lives and our work. It’s why we’re here.” Whether you’ve read Daring Greatly and Rising Strong or you’re new to Brené Brown’s work, this book is for anyone who wants to step up and into brave leadership.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the new possibilities and approaches to social modeling currently being made possible by an unprecedented variety of datasets generated by our interactions with modern technologies. This area has witnessed a veritable explosion of activity over the last few years, yielding many interesting and useful results. Our aim is to provide an overview of the state of the art in this area of research, merging an extremely heterogeneous array of datasets and models. Social Phenomena: From Data Analysis to Models is divided into two parts. Part I deals with modeling social behavior under normal conditions: How we live, travel, collaborate and interact with each other in our daily lives. Part II deals with societal behavior under exceptional conditions: Protests, armed insurgencies, terrorist attacks, and reactions to infectious diseases. This book offers an overview of one of the most fertile emerging fields bringing together practitioners from scientific communities as diverse as social sciences, physics and computer science. We hope to not only provide an unifying framework to understand and characterize social phenomena, but also to help foster the dialogue between researchers working on similar problems from different fields and perspectives.

Download or read book Acts 29 written by Brian Jacobs and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As long as people have heard the name of Jesus and believed his teachings, the Holy Spirit has been at work in the hearts and minds of people. If you have heard the good news about his life, death, resurrection, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, you are part of the continued work of Jesus Christ in the earth. This book has been written for those who desire to better understand the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian. The book of Acts contains more than a historical record of the early followers of Jesus; it contains the last words and instructions of Jesus to his closest followers before his ascension into heaven. As his last words, Jesus made a clear emphasis on the power and indwelling of the Holy Spirit upon which generations of his disciples would depend on. The central focus of this book is the nature and power of the Holy Spirit within and among his followers. In the end, the proof of Acts 29 is found in our living! In a variety of ways, the truth continues to provide an unmistakable bond between each generation of Jesuss disciples. The message Jesus spoke directly to his disciples in the beginnings of Lukes historical record continues to be boldly lived out by millions of believers today. Jesuss mandate to believe and be saved and then to be baptized in the Holy Spirit is still relevant for us today.
