Book Contacts Credibility and Common Knowledge

Download or read book Contacts Credibility and Common Knowledge written by Mr.Marcus Miller and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1992-03-01 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper three possible reasons are examined for a sluggish inflation response to a hard currency peg. Models of overlapping wage contracts are analyzed and shown to generate little inertia. This contrasts with the effects of government credibility and the speed of private sector learning, which are shown to have a major impact on the speed of inflation adjustment. But even if individual agents believe the government will not devalue, it is shown that inflation inertia can still arise if these expectations are not common knowledge.

Book excerpt: Structure is a central theme of construction, of interest to both engineers and architects; this book on architectural structures aims to facilitate the dialogue between these two professions. The chapters are organized into a progressive, step-by-step analysis of increasing complexity - a structural path - stressing an intuitive approach and conveying with diagrams and simple equations the requirements behind the dimensioning of all types of structures employed in construction. This approach is particularly useful for students, providing them with an intuitive understanding of form and function, as well as the insight to make their designs more sensible, coherent and elegant. "The art of structures" has been written for architects, civil engineers and construction professionals, and for all those need to acquire an intuitive and practical approach to the design and appropriate dimensioning of load bearing structures.

Book Contacts Credibility and Common Knowledge

Download or read book Contacts Credibility and Common Knowledge written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1989-04-03 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explains why sovereign issuers of reserve currencies do not use unexpected inflation to repudiate their foreign liabilities. Monetary restraint is exercised because of the fear that reserve users will switch to other currencies if an attempt is made to raise “excessive” revenue. By the same reasoning, capital flight can serve as a deterrent to excessive money creation. It is shown that even without policy precommitment or aversion to inflation, the availability of alternative currencies can support an equilibrium with a finite, time consistent inflation rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intensive global search is on for the "rule of law," the holy grail of good governance, which has led to a dramatic increase in judicial reform activities in developing countries. Very little attention, however, has been paid to the widening gap between theory and practice, or to the ongoing disconnect between stated project goals and actual funded activities. Beyond Common Knowledge examines the standard methods of legal and judicial reform. Taking stock of international experience in legal and judicial reform in Latin America, Europe, India, and China, this volume answers key questions in the judicial reform debate: What are the common assumptions about the role of the courts in improving economic growth and democratic politics? Do we expect too much from the formal legal system? Is investing in judicial reform projects a good strategy for getting at the problems of governance that beset many developing countries? If not, what are we missing?

Book The Evolution of Reputation Based Cooperation

Download or read book The Evolution of Reputation Based Cooperation written by Rafael Wittek and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gossiping and its reputation effects are viewed as the most powerful mechanism to sustain cooperation without the intervention of formal authorities. Being virtually costless, gossiping is highly effective in monitoring and sanctioning norm violators. Rational individuals cooperate in order to avoid negative reputations. But this narrative is incomplete and often leads to wrong predictions. Goal Framing Theory, a cognitive-behavioral approach anchored in evolutionary research, provides a better explanatory framework. Three overarching goal frames (hedonic, gain, and normative) constantly compete for being in our cognitive foreground. This Element argues that for gossip to have reputation effects, a salient normative goal frame is required. But since the hedonic mindset usually trumps gain and normative concerns, most gossip will be driven by hedonic motives and therefore not have strong reputation effects. Propositions on cultural, structural, dispositional, situational, and technological gossip antecedents and consequences are developed and illustrated with evidence from the empirical record.
