Book Handbook of Contact Mechanics

Download or read book Handbook of Contact Mechanics written by Valentin L. Popov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book contains a structured collection of the complete solutions of all essential axisymmetric contact problems. Based on a systematic distinction regarding the type of contact, the regime of friction and the contact geometry, a multitude of technically relevant contact problems from mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and medical engineering are discussed. In addition to contact problems between isotropic elastic and viscoelastic media, contact problems between transversal-isotropic elastic materials and functionally graded materials are addressed, too. The optimization of the latter is a focus of current research especially in the fields of actuator technology and biomechanics. The book takes into account adhesive effects which allow access to contact-mechanical questions about micro- and nano-electromechanical systems. Solutions of the contact problems include both the relationships between the macroscopic force, displacement and contact length, as well as the stress and displacement fields at the surface and, if appropriate, within the half-space medium. Solutions are always obtained with the simplest available method - usually with the method of dimensionality reduction (MDR) or approaches which use the solution of the non-adhesive normal contact problem to solve the respective contact problem.

Book Investigation of Adhesion and Fracture of the Polymer oxide Interfaces Using Rolling Contact Mechanics

Download or read book Investigation of Adhesion and Fracture of the Polymer oxide Interfaces Using Rolling Contact Mechanics written by Honquan She and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the very basic origin, the adhesion strength or fracture resistance of contacting interfaces results from intermolecular forces. When interface is separated, external energy is provided to the system, which eventually is dissipated in the form of mechanical deformation of the bulk material and cleavage of the interfacial bonds. The objective of this study is to understand the energy dissipation mechanism of interfacial fracture. It particularly includes polymer molecular weight and rate dependent properties of fracture. The model system consists of an oxidized polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)-made hemicylinder and a PDMS thin films substrate, in which system energy is mainly dissipated at the interface layer. A unique experimental methodology---rolling contact mechanics method is developed by rolling the hemi-cylinder on the test substrate at a uniform velocity, the contact deformation of which is used to estimate the energy dissipation governed by non-equilibrium processes occurred at the interface. The strong molecular weight dependent fracture energy can be explained in terms of polymer chain extension and relaxation, which has its origins in the classic Lake-Thomas theory. The fracture energy is amplified by the molecular weights of polymers which bridge the open interface. The rate effect can be explained using the kinetic theory of thermally activated bond rupture, the results of which point out that this molecular weight dependent Lake-Thomas effect is purely a non-equilibrium effect and isn't compatible with the traditional notion of equilibrium fracture. The energy dissipation occurred at the interface can now be understood under the framework which combined chain elasticity and interfacial kinetics.

Download or read book Contact Mechanics written by K. L. Johnson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-08-28 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This treatise is concerned with the stresses and deformation of solid bodies in contact with each other, along curved surfaces which touch initially at a point or along a line. Examples are a railway wheel and rail, or a pair of gear wheel teeth. Professor Johnson first reviews the development of the theory of contact stresses since the problem was originally addressed by H. Hertz in 1882. Next he discusses the influence of friction and the topographical roughness of surfaces, and this is incorporated into the theory of contact mechanics. An important feature is the treatment of bodies which deform plastically or viscoelastically. In addition to stationary contact, an appreciable section of the book is concerned with bodies which are in sliding or rolling contact, or which collide.

This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent investigations into blast-resistant properties of polyureas and other multi-phase polymeric elastomers indicate that they can dissipate broad bands of frequencies such as those encountered in blast events. In this unique book, Elastomeric Polymers with High Rate Sensitivity, Dr. Roshdy Barsoum and expert contributors bring together the cutting-edge testing methodologies, material properties, and critical design data for engineers seeking to deploy this technology. Where conventional methods of resisting blast, shockwave, and penetration are expensive, time-consuming and impractical, high-strain rate elastomeric polymers (HSREP) can be cheaper, quicker, and more easily applied to new and old materials alike. This book aids both military and civilian engineers in a range of applications, from buildings and tunnels to lightweight armor, ships, and aircraft. The book features constitutive models for software developers designing with these advanced polymers, as well as a discussion of the mechanisms of interaction between high-strain rate polymers and other materials. It also thoroughly covers HSREP engineering methods to achieve other unique properties, such as fireproofing. - Material properties and design data included to enable engineers to successfully deploy this technology - Cheaper, quicker, and more easily implemented than traditional methods of increasing blast and ballistic performance - A how-to guide to the engineering of high strain rate elastomeric polymers to achieve other useful properties, such as fireproofing
