The initial objective was to determine if lethally irradiated pigs develop bacteremia and if subsequent invasion of the organs and muscles occurs. Pigs weighing approximately 90 to 113 kg. were subjected to a total dose of 966 R, at a rate of 10.5 + .6 R/hr. of gamma radiation from a 60Co Source over a four day period. At determined intervals blood samples were obtained from all animals for bacteriologic examination. Muscle (ham-semimembranosus and/or biceps femoris, loin - longissimus dorsi, shoulder - teres major), liver, spleen, lung, kidney and numerous lymph nodes were subjected to bacteriologic examination when the animals were terminated.
