The epistemological domain addresses three interrelated topics: how African university students ethnocentric choice of research topics hampers the production of knowledge; researchers adaptation of their research methods to improve validity; and the challenge of knowledge production on community museums plagued by gross inertia, irregularities, uncooperative gatekeepers and inadequate funding. The methodological domain foregrounds issues around scientific rigour, the criteria for what counts as quality research, and reporting standards. Contributors contend that the use of mixed methods provides the best scope for the effective study and evaluation of social issues. They also detail how better-funded projects tend to improve the respect of ethical standards especially as they pertain to the protection of subjects confidentiality. Self-financed researchers on the other hand tend to be less compliant, a challenge that afflict especially younger and inexperienced researchers. This volume thus contributes not only to a critical understanding of the challenges faced by social scientists in contemporary Africa, but also the prospects and mechanisms on how to improve knowledge production processes.

L’automaticité modifie considérablement les capacités d’appréciation de la normalité, jusqu’ici de la compétence du juge et des pouvoirs publics. La convergence des techniques (vidéo, base de données informatiques...) contribue à modifier profondément les frontières de l’espace public et, par conséquent, de l’espace démocratique. L’ouvrage présente les débats interdisciplinaires qui ont eu lieu à l’occasion d’une application technique actuellement en cours. S’interroger sur ce qu’est un comportement anormal permet de rappeler les modalités d’élaboration de la normalité dans une démocratie.

Sometimes popular protest is expressed through religion, often (and sometimes violently) by young people, exasperated by their long wait for social achievement. Electoral wars and the formation of militias reveal a geography of violence in urban areas, which, in some sectarian excesses, can be displaced to rural areas, as described in the study on Boko Haram. Le « musée virtuel » en vient à rejoindre le « musée conservateur ». La numérisation du patrimoine modifie-t-elle l’institution ? Le musée conservateur des siècles passés privilégie aujourd’hui la fréquentation du public et la diversification des modes de financement pour accroître ses moyens. Le musée virtuel en devient une extension, mais aussi parfois un concurrent. Dès lors que la mission de service public est confrontée au marché, la relation de l’institution à son patrimoine s’en trouve affectée. Autrement dit, la capacité à transmettre un héritage culturel aux futures générations s’inscrit désormais au cœur des débats sur l’avenir des musées.
