Download or read book Occupational Safety and Health Simplified for the Food Manufacturing Industry written by Frank R. Spellman and published by Government Institutes. This book was released on 2008-08-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of any food manufacturer's safety program depends on how accurately a facility interprets the laws and how it handles the hazards that workers face on a daily basis. This new 'go to' resource provides industry managers, safety directors, and workers with straightforward answers to complicated OSHA questions. Referencing FDA, USDA, and other regulatory standards as applicable, Occupational Safety and Health Simplified for the Food Manufacturing Industry explains the requirements of the twelve major Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards in Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 29 Chapter 1910 (general industry) and Chapter 1928 (agriculture) for food worker safety and provides examples to help ensure compliance with all applicable standards. Readers will examine the most serious health hazards in the industry, including inhalation of flavorings, radiation, and amputations, and identify ways to prevent accidents from occurring. They will address both industry-wide safety concerns and segment-specific hazards for meatpacking, poultry processing, fruit and vegetable canning, and food flavoring, and find information to help them overcome the language and cultural barriers of the food industry's growing Hispanic workforce to ensure adequate protection for all. A complete sample food manufacturing safety program that meets OSHA requirements and a comprehensive checklist for completing self-audits are included.

Book excerpt: The Construction Industry safety and health standards contained in this booklet are to aid employers, supervisors, and safety and health personnel in their efforts toward achieving compliance with OSHA standards in the workplace. Although the digest does not contain all OSHA Construction Industry safety and health standards, those presented are (1) standards most frequently overlooked by the employer, and (2) standards covering particularly hazardous situations. The standards are presented alphabetically followed by the reference to the appropriate regulation. With few exceptions, standards in this digest are from Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 1926. In addition, this booklet contains (1) a brief discussion of the essential elements of a generally applicable safety and health program, (2) a reminder to the employer of the advisability of regular employee training for job safety and health, and (3) a description of OSHA's voluntary programs such as Onsite Consultation Program and Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) available to the employer. Remember this booklet is only a digest of basic applicable standards and should not be considered as a complete substitute for any provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, or for any standards promulgated under the Act. The requirements contained herein are summarized and abbreviated. The actual source standards are referenced at the end of each topic discussed; the CFR should be consulted for a more complete explanation of the specific standards listed.

Download or read book Safety Performance in a Lean Environment written by Paul F. English and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As changing customer demands and shifting world markets continue to put a strain on businesses in all sectors, your business needs every advantage to stay competitive. Many people may think of Lean processes as suitable only for the manufacturing floor, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Safety Performance in a Lean Environment: A Guide to Building Safety into a Process demonstrates how Lean tools can eliminate waste in your safety program, making it an important piece not only in keeping your organization safe but also in keeping it globally competitive. Written by safety pro Paul F. English, this book explores tools such as Lean manufacturing, DMAIC processes, and Kepner-Trego problem solving and how to use them to increase efficiency and eliminate waste in safety programs. He goes on to discuss value-based management, a technique identified as a leading business model for any organization wanting to catch "The Toyota Way." These processes help you build, incorporate, and sustain a safety program and understand how to get and maintain a foothold for the safety program in times of change. Here’s what you get: Real safety solutions for a Lean environment Methods for setting up standard work for EHS professionals How-tos for JSA and pre-task analysis to help develop standardized work Tips and tricks that everyone can use to jump start a stalled safety program No book currently on the market discusses Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma processes and links them to the occupational safety or environmental science. Yet these are the areas where the need for Lean processes is becoming acute. English demonstrates how to anticipate paradigm shifts in management models and how environmental health and safety fits into the model. He defines what adds value to the safety and manufacturing process as well as to the customer. These changes may include a change in daily, weekly or monthly metrics that can help or harm a safety program. Defining what adds value to the safety and manufacturing process and the customer helps you understand how to build safety into a process, creating a strong safety program.

This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety provides guidelines for industries that manufacture, consume, or handle chemicals, by focusing on new ways to design, correct, or improve process safety management practices. This new framework for thinking about process safety builds upon the original process safety management ideas published in the early 1990s, integrates industry lessons learned over the intervening years, utilizes applicable "total quality" principles (i.e., plan, do, check, act), and organizes it in a way that will be useful to all organizations - even those with relatively lower hazard activities - throughout the life-cycle of a company.

Employees of employers performing shipyard activities on the shore, pier, terminal, yard, shipyard, machine shop, riverbank, etc., as well as on the vessels afloat or in drydocks or graving docks are covered by the Shipyard standards.
