Book Unified Constitutive Equations for Creep and Plasticity

Download or read book Unified Constitutive Equations for Creep and Plasticity written by A.K. Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutive equations refer to 'the equations that constitute the material response' at any point within an object. They are one of the ingredients necessary to predict the deformation and fracture response of solid bodies (among other ingredients such as the equations of equilibrium and compatibility and mathematical descriptions of the configuration and loading history). These ingredients are generally combined together in complicated computer programs, such as finite element analyses, which serve to both codify the pertinent knowledge and to provide convenient tools for making predictions of peak stresses, plastic strain ranges, crack growth rates, and other quantities of interest. Such predictions fall largely into two classes: structural analysis and manufacturing analysis. In the first category, the usual purpose is life prediction, for assessment of safety, reliability, durability, and/or operational strategies. Some high-technology systems limited by mechanical behavior, and therefore requiring accurate life assess ments, include rocket engines (the space-shuttle main engine being a prominent example), piping and pressure vessels in nuclear and non-nuclear power plants (for example, heat exchanger tubes in solar central receivers and reformer tubes in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors used for process heat applications), and the ubiquitous example of the jet engine turbine blade. In structural analysis, one is sometimes concerned with predicting distortion per se, but more often, one is concerned with predicting fracture; in these cases the informa tion about deformation is an intermediate result en route to the final goal of a life prediction.

Book Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel Plated Structures

Download or read book Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel Plated Structures written by Jeom Kee Paik and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-03-28 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel plated structures are important in a variety of marine and land-based applications, including ships, offshore platforms, power and chemical plants, box girder bridges and box girder cranes. The basic strength members in steel plated structures include support members (such as stiffeners and plate girders), plates, stiffened panels/grillages and box girders. During their lifetime, the structures constructed using these members are subjected to various types of loading which is for the most part operational, but may in some cases be extreme or even accidental. Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel Plated Structures reviews and describes both fundamentals and practical design procedures in this field. The derivation of the basic mathematical expressions is presented together with a thorough discussion of the assumptions and the validity of the underlying expressions and solution methods. Particularly valuable coverage in the book includes: * Serviceability and the ultimate limit state design of steel structural systems and their components * The progressive collapse and the design of damage tolerant structures in the context of marine accidents * Age related structural degradation such as corrosion and fatigue cracks Furthermore, this book is also an easily accessed design tool which facilitates learning by applying the concepts of the limit states for practice using a set of computer programs which can be downloaded. In addition, expert guidance on mechanical model test results as well as nonlinear finite element solutions, sophisticated design methodologies useful for practitioners in industries or research institutions, selected methods for accurate and efficient analyses of nonlinear behavior of steel plated structures both up to and after the ultimate strength is reached, is provided. Designed as both a textbook and a handy reference, the book is well suited to teachers and university students who are approaching the limit state design technology of steel plated structures for the first time. The book also meets the needs of structural designers or researchers who are involved in civil, marine and mechanical engineering as well as offshore engineering and naval architecture.

Book An Introduction to Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book An Introduction to Fluid Mechanics written by Faith A. Morrison and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a modern and elegant introduction to engineering fluid mechanics enriched with numerous examples, exercises and applications. A swollen creek tumbles over rocks and through crevasses, swirling and foaming. Taffy can be stretched, reshaped and twisted in various ways. Both the water and the taffy are fluids and their motions are governed by the laws of nature. The aim of this textbook is to introduce the reader to the analysis of flows using the laws of physics and the language of mathematics. The book delves deeply into the mathematical analysis of flows; knowledge of the patterns fluids form and why they are formed, and also the stresses fluids generate and why they are generated, is essential to designing and optimising modern systems and devices. Inventions such as helicopters and lab-on-a-chip reactors would never have been designed without the insight provided by mathematical models.

Book Continuum Mechanics of Anisotropic Materials

Download or read book Continuum Mechanics of Anisotropic Materials written by Stephen C. Cowin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuum Mechanics of Anisotropic Materials(CMAM) presents an entirely new and unique development of material anisotropy in the context of an appropriate selection and organization of continuum mechanics topics. These features will distinguish this continuum mechanics book from other books on this subject. Textbooks on continuum mechanics are widely employed in engineering education, however, none of them deal specifically with anisotropy in materials. For the audience of Biomedical, Chemical and Civil Engineering students, these materials will be dealt with more frequently and greater accuracy in their analysis will be desired. Continuum Mechanics of Anisotropic Materials' author has been a leader in the field of developing new approaches for the understanding of anisotropic materials.

Book Theory of Multicomponent Fluids

Download or read book Theory of Multicomponent Fluids written by Donald A. Drew and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-10 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exposition of the derivation and use of equations of motion for two-phase flow. The approach taken derives the equations of motion using ensemble averaging, and compares them with those derived from control volume methods. Closure for dispersed flows is discussed, and some fundamental solutions are given. The work focuses on the fundamental aspects of two-phase flow, and is intended to give the reader a background for understanding the dynamics as well as a system of equations that can be used in predictions of the behavior of dispersed two-phase flows. The exposition in terms of ensemble averaging is new, and combining it with modern continuum mechanics concepts makes this book unique. Intended for engineering, mathematics and physics researchers and advanced graduate students working in the field.

Book Materials with Memory

Download or read book Materials with Memory written by Hans-Dieter Alber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-13 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the mathematical theory of systems of differential equations consisting of the partial differential equations resulting from conservation of mass and momentum, and of constitutive equations with internal variables. The investigations are guided by the objective of proving existence and uniqueness, and are based on the idea of transforming the internal variables and the constitutive equations. A larger number of constitutive equations from the engineering sciences are presented. The book is therefore suitable not only for specialists, but also for mathematicians seeking for an introduction in the field, and for engineers with a sound mathematical background.

Book Engineering Rheology

Download or read book Engineering Rheology written by Roger I. Tanner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-03-02 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to provide a guide, with examples, for those who wish to make predictions about the mechanical and thermal behaviour of non-Newtonian materials in engineering and processing technology. After an introductory survey of the field and a review of basic continuum mechanics, the radical differences between elongational and shear behaviour are shown. Two chapters, one based on a continuum approach and the other using microstructural approaches, lead to useful mathematical desriptions of materials for engineering applications. As examples of nearly-viscometric and nearly-elongational flows, there is a discussion of lubrication and related shearing flows, and fibre- spinning and film-blowing respectively. A long chapter is devoted to the important new field of computational rheology, and this is followed by chapters on stability and turbulence and the all-important temperature effects in flow. This new edition contains much new material not available in book form elsewhere-for example wall slip, suspension rheology, computational rheology and new results in stability theory.
