This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constitution, by-Laws and Playing Rules of the Association of Indoor Base Ball Clubs The first contest, between two nines chosen from among the Farragut members, was one of the funniest performances ever witnessed, and the members and visitors went home loud in their praises of indoor base ball. Owing to the newness of the game and consequent inexperience of those who played, the score oftentimes ran into large figures, the first record being 41 to 40. As the play of the athletes improved, the result was much smaller figures and more on the professional basis of base ball, until now, with numerous clubs and leagues all over the country, the game has reached a scientific standpoint hitherto unsuspected of fulfilment. Book Playing for Keeps

Download or read book Playing for Keeps written by Warren Jay Goldstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1850s organized baseball was a club-based fraternal sport thriving in the cultures of respectable artisans, clerks and shopkeepers, and middle-class sportsmen. Two decades later it had become an entertainment business run by owners and managers, depending on gate receipts and the increasingly disciplined labor of skilled player-employees. Playing for Keeps is an insightful, in-depth account of the game that became America's premier spectator sport for nearly a century. Reconstructing the culture and experience of early baseball through a careful reading of the sporting press, baseball guides, and the correspondence of the player-manager Harry Wright, Warren Goldstein discovers the origins of many modern controversies during the game's earliest decades. The 20th Anniversary Edition of Goldstein's classic includes information about the changes that have occurred in the history of the sport since the 1980s and an account of his experience as a scholarly consultant during the production of Ken Burns's Baseball.

Book Baseball Before We Knew It

Download or read book Baseball Before We Knew It written by David Block and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may be America?s game, but no one seems to know how or when baseball really started. Theories abound, myths proliferate, but reliable information has been in short supply?until now, when Baseball before We Knew It brings fresh new evidence of baseball?s origins into play. David Block looks into the early history of the game and of the 150-year-old debate about its beginnings. He tackles one stubborn misconception after another, debunking the enduring belief that baseball descended from the English game of rounders and revealing a surprising new explanation for the most notorious myth of all?the Abner Doubleday?Cooperstown story. ø Block?s book takes readers on an exhilarating journey through the centuries in search of clues to the evolution of our modern National Pastime. Among his startling discoveries is a set of long-forgotten baseball rules from the 1700s. Block evaluates the originality and historical significance of the Knickerbocker rules of 1845, revisits European studies on the ancestry of baseball which indicate that the game dates back hundreds, if not thousands of years, and assembles a detailed history of games and pastimes from the Middle Ages onward that contributed to baseball?s development. In its thoroughness and reach, and its extensive descriptive bibliography of early baseball sources, this book is a unique and invaluable resource?a comprehensive, reliable, and readable account of baseball before it was America?s game.

Book When Baseball Went White

Download or read book When Baseball Went White written by Ryan A. Swanson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Jackie Robinson valiantly breaking baseball’s color barrier in 1947 is one that most Americans know. But less recognized is the fact that some seventy years earlier, following the Civil War, baseball was tenuously biracial and had the potential for a truly open game. How, then, did the game become so firmly segregated that it required a trailblazer like Robinson? The answer, Ryan A. Swanson suggests, has everything to do with the politics of “reconciliation” and a wish to avoid the issues of race that an integrated game necessarily raised. The history of baseball during Reconstruction, as Swanson tells it, is a story of lost opportunities. Thomas Fitzgerald and Octavius Catto (a Philadelphia baseball tandem), for example, were poised to emerge as pioneers of integration in the 1860s. Instead, the desire to create a “national game”—professional and appealing to white Northerners and Southerners alike—trumped any movement toward civil rights. Focusing on Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Richmond—three cities with large African American populations and thriving baseball clubs—Swanson uncovers the origins of baseball’s segregation and the mechanics of its implementation. An important piece of sports history, his work also offers a better understanding of Reconstruction, race, and segregation in America.

Book excerpt: Historical novel of New York City's volunteer firemen during the turbulent period of industrialization, immigration, abolishionist movement and Civil War. The volunteer system was under attack by a political/insurance industry clique pushing for a paid fire department equipped with the new steam fire engines, which the volunteers opposed. A story of bravery and courage of men who came from all walks of life and were responsible for saving the city from destruction by dozens of disastrous fires, only to be scorned by politicians and labeled as rowdies by their insurance enemies. An interesting look at New York in this period of change and incudes how the game of baseball originated with the volunteer firemen. The New York volunteers carried their firefighting experience west during the gold rush and were responsible for formation of many fire departments in western states. A must read for firefighting, newspaper, telegraph, insurance, New York City and Philadelphia history buffs.
