Book excerpt: Con ocasión de los 150 años de la Constitución de 1863, proclamada el 8 de mayo de ese año, la Universidad Externado de Colombia publica esta edición facsimilar del texto de Rionegro. Ya lo había hecho en 1977, antecedida por una presentación de nuestro ilustre profesor Carlos Restrepo Piedrahita. Se agrega además en esta ocasión el Pacto de Unión del 20 de septiembre de 1861, que estableció el nombre de Estados Unidos de Colombia para nuestro país y abrió las puertas para la Constitución radical. Este Pacto se publica por primera vez en edición facsimilar. Los dos son los documentos esenciales del periodo radical y que continúan iluminando la vigencia de los valores fundamentales del humanismo: la libertad, la tolerancia, el respeto al otro, la autonomía, la fraternidad, la igualdad; conquistas que parecieran lejanas en el tiempo y suficientemente consolidadas en el mundo del siglo XXI, pero que no dejan de ser perseguidas desde diferentes frentes. Estos principios, por paradójico que pareciera en estos tiempos, son cada vez más necesarios para darles sentido a la naturaleza humana y al papel del individuo en la sociedad. Sea esta una razón para evocar de nuevo y por siempre los fundamentos de los abuelos radicales, fundadores del Externado. Hoy, la Constitución de 1863, luego de 150 años y aunque no sea la que rige a Colombia, continúa siendo una luz que no deja de alumbrar los caminos de la libertad.
