Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constructs an innovative theoretical analysis framework for corporate consolidation through M&A under the condition of government competition during the transition period. Under the condition of transitional economy, the government is an important agent in economic development. Government behaviors, especially government competitions, are institutional variables that affect enterprise behaviors and corporate consolidation. Based on the perspective of local government competition, starting from the essential problems of China's enterprise M&A during the transition period, and taking “the existence of M&A waves-the occurrence mechanism of M&A under government competition-the process of corporate consolidation under government competition—the macro and micro effects of M&A” as the main line, this book reveals the mechanism and effects of enterprise M&A on the evolution of industrial economic structure and regional economic structure under the paradigm of government competition. Book Democracy Between Consolidation and Crisis

Download or read book Democracy Between Consolidation and Crisis written by Leonardo Morlino and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1998-07-02 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the twentieth century has witnessed several waves of democratization in Europe, the Americas, and in other regions of the world, such as South East Asia. Although for the most part these democratic regimes are no longer haunted by the prospect of a return to authoritarianism, severe economic and social problems have posed serious challenges, creating a situation where change is often achieved through alternating periods of consolidation and crisis. Drawing on a systematic, empirical analysis of four key Southern European countries, Portugal, Spain, Greece, and Italy, Morlino identifies several key aspects of democratic consolidation: consensus and legitimation, party system and party organization, and the ways in which organized and non-organized interests are related to parties and the institutions of state. The resulting models of consolidation are analysed and the mechanisms and patterns of their unfolding crises identified, taking care to disentangle the pragmatic reactions against the regime, often related to corruption, from more ideological ones grounded in differences in values. Finally, the author addresses the question of the `quality' of democracy, examining how this is related to the outcome of processes of consolidation and crisis. This insightful study offers the first extensive, comparative analysis of consolidation and crisis in these countries, and features a wealth of up-to-date information on party organizations, interest associations, the media, and public opinion. Although clearly focusing on Southern Europe, the author's findings are extremely relevant for understanding the politics of several other regions, including Eastern Europe, Latin America, and South East Asia.

Book Individual and Collective Memory Consolidation

Download or read book Individual and Collective Memory Consolidation written by Thomas J. Anastasio and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument that individuals and collectives form memories by analogous processes and a case study of collective retrograde amnesia. We form individual memories by a process known as consolidation: the conversion of immediate and fleeting bits of information into a stable and accessible representation of facts and events. These memories provide a version of the past that helps us navigate the present and is critical to individual identity. In this book, Thomas Anastasio, Kristen Ann Ehrenberger, Patrick Watson, and Wenyi Zhang propose that social groups form collective memories by analogous processes. Using facts and insights from neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and history, they describe a single process of consolidation with analogous—not merely comparable—manifestations on any level, whether brain, family, or society. They propose a three-in-one model of memory consolidation, composed of a buffer, a relator, and a generalizer, all within the consolidating entity, that can explain memory consolidation phenomena on individual and collective levels. When consolidation is disrupted by traumatic injury to a brain structure known as the hippocampus, memories in the process of being consolidated are lost. In individuals, this is known as retrograde amnesia. The authors hypothesize a "social hippocampus" and argue that disruption at the collective level can result in collective retrograde amnesia. They offer the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) as an example of trauma to the social hippocampus and present evidence for the loss of recent collective memory in mainland Chinese populations that experienced the Cultural Revolution.

Book Systems Analysis of Inland Consolidation Centers for Marine Cargo

Download or read book Systems Analysis of Inland Consolidation Centers for Marine Cargo written by Institute for Applied Technology (U.S.). Technical Analysis Division and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technical note documents a study to develop analytical techniques for use in optimizing the locations and characteristics of inland centers to facilitate the flow of containerizable marine cargo. Such centers would perform the consolidation of small lots of break-bulk general cargo into container loads for export; for the reverse flow, they would carry out the handling and unloading of import containers for cargo distribution. Performance of these functions inland, rather than exclusively at or near the ports involved, should result in savings to the shipping community from transporting cargo over land in full containers rather than as more costly less-than-carload lots. A mathematical model and associated solution technique have been developed, implemented in a digital computer program to a point compatible with the kinds of information available, and exercised using the body of data and background material accumulated during the fact-finding phases of the study. Book Case Studies of City County Consolidation

Download or read book Case Studies of City County Consolidation written by Suzanne M. Leland and published by M.E. Sharpe. This book was released on 2004-07-19 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing cutbacks in federal and state assistance and a new wave of taxpayer revolts, local governments have renewed interest in local government consolidation as a way of achieving efficiencies of scale in response to citizen demands for services. Yet the vast majority of consolidation efforts fail, either during the process of drafting a charter or once they reach the ballot - only five have passed since 1990; only thirty-two have been successfully implemented since the first, when the city of New Orleans merged with Orleans Parish in 1805. What accounts for the high failure rate and what factors led to successful consolidations? This volume presents thirteen comparable case studies of consolidation campaigns and distills the findings.

Book City County Consolidation and Its Alternatives Reshaping the Local Government Landscape

Download or read book City County Consolidation and Its Alternatives Reshaping the Local Government Landscape written by J.B. Carr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City-country consolidation builds upon the Progressive tradition of favoring structural reform of local governments. This volume looks at some important issues confronting contemporary efforts to consolidate governments and develops a theoretical approach to understanding both the motivations for pursuing consolidation and the way the rules guiding the process shape the outcome. Individual chapters consider the push for city-county consolidation and the current context in which such decisions are debated, along with several alternatives to city-county consolidation. The transaction costs of city-county consolidation are compared against the costs of municipal annexation, inter-local agreements, and the use of special district governments to achieve the desired consolidation of services. The final chapters compare competing perspectives for and against consolidation and put together some of the pieces of an explanatory theory of local government consolidation.

Book City County Consolidation

Download or read book City County Consolidation written by Suzanne M. Leland and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a frequently discussed reform, campaigns to merge a major municipality and county to form a unified government fail to win voter approval eighty per cent of the time. One cause for the low success rate may be that little systematic analysis of consolidated governments has been done. In City–County Consolidation, Suzanne Leland and Kurt Thurmaier compare nine city–county consolidations—incorporating data from 10 years before and after each consolidation—to similar cities and counties that did not consolidate. Their groundbreaking study offers valuable insight into whether consolidation meets those promises made to voters to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of these governments. The book will appeal to those with an interest in urban affairs, economic development, local government management, general public administration, and scholars of policy, political science, sociology, and geography.
