Book Consolidation Analyses of Soils

Download or read book Consolidation Analyses of Soils written by Jian-Hua Yin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When stresses are applied to saturated soil, deformation will occur as water in voids is squeezed out. Consolidation Analyses of Soils focuses on the consolidation of fully saturated soils. The book follows a classic approach by beginning with one-dimensional constitutive relations of soils and one-dimensional consolidation. It then moves on to analytical solutions to several one-dimensional consolidation problems and one-dimensional finite strain consolidation. The authors also present a finite element method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems, analytical solutions to consolidation of soil with vertical drains, and a finite difference method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems. Simplified methods for consolidation analysis of soils exhibiting creep are introduced and applied to different cases. Three-dimensional consolidation equations and solutions of typical three-dimensional consolidation problems are covered, as well as simplified finite element consolidation analysis of soils with vertical drain and finite element method for three-dimensional consolidation problems. The book is unique in that it covers both classic solutions and state-of-the-art work in consolidation analyses of soils. Authors Jian-Hua Yin is Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Guofu Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Structures and Mechanics at Wuhan University of Technology, China.

Book A Comprehensive Study on Soil Consolidation

Download or read book A Comprehensive Study on Soil Consolidation written by Shahin Nayyeri Amiri and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research, soil consolidation is explored in a comprehensive analytical and experimental study. The pore pressure development and dissipation for clay at its liquid limit under one-dimensional compression was investigated using the mid-plane pore pressure measurements. In general, the Terzaghi's theory of consolidation predicted the pore pressure dissipation and the percent consolidation accurately as long as the sample was in a normally loaded state. For a preconsolidated state however, the results obtained by Terzaghi theory are doubtful. Coefficient of consolidation for smaller pressures varied during consolidation, and although the soil was in a fully saturated state for relatively high pressure increments, the pore pressure developed was less than the applied pressure. Then, the effect of different pressure increment ratios on one dimensional consolidation tests has been studied. The secondary compression effects have been founded to increase as the pressure increment ratio is reduced. Consolidation of a clay layer delimited between sheets with small permeability was also investigated in this study. The consolidation theory of compressible soils usually assumes drainage-free boundaries. This change in boundary conditions at the drainage surface necessitates the use of an approximate technique for solution of the governing partial differential equation. In this study, the solution was obtained by using the Galerkin Method and compared with the "free drainage" case. As expected, the consolidation in the case of restricted drainage proceeds at a much lower rate. The compression consolidation behavior of trampled clays in a semi- saturated state was also analyzed in this research program. It is generally known that the type and energy of compaction bring about deviations in the soil structure and hence, in its engineering properties. Therefore, in the experimental phase of this study, soils were prepared by different trampling efforts and also by different compaction methods. Finally, a reasonably realistic theory of soil consolidation has been proposed and the effect of variable permeability and compressibility on the consolidation behavior was investigated followed by a mathematical treatment of the behavior. Subsequently, laboratory consolidation tests with mid-plane pore pressure measurements were conducted on different kinds of clay.

Book Compressibility Of Ultra soft Soil

Download or read book Compressibility Of Ultra soft Soil written by Myint Win Bo and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formation of an alluvial clay deposit normally goes through sedimentation and consolidation. While the bottom portion is undergoing self-weight consolidation, sedimentation continues to take place at the top. However, the compression behavior of such deposits upon loading is not well understood. This book describes the compression behavior of ultra-soft soil upon additional load application. Various types of laboratory compression tests suitable for this type of soil are discussed, such as tests using small- and large-scale consolidometers, hydraulic Rowe cells under different drainage conditions, constant rate of loading and constant rate of strain tests. It also explains how to determine the transition point, which differentiates the two distinct behaviors between slurry state and soil state deformation. Methods to determine the compression indices and coefficients of consolidation at different stress ranges, which are required for the prediction of magnitude of settlement and time rate of settlement, are developed. An equation for predicting settlement of ultra-soft soil in both the slurry and soil stages is elaborated upon. These proposed methods of characterization or analyses — which are validated against published data, laboratory measurements and a case study — serve as useful tools for designing and constructing embankments and for carrying out land reclamation on ultra-soft soil.

Book Consolidation Behavior of Clayey Soils Under Radial Drainage

Download or read book Consolidation Behavior of Clayey Soils Under Radial Drainage written by A. Sridharan and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Barron's degree of consolidation, Ur, versus the time factor, Tr, relationship for soils undergoing consolidation with radial drainage for the equal vertical strain condition, a simple method has been developed to determine the value of the coefficient of consolidation with radial drainage, cr. Theoretical log10(d2e/t) versus Ur curves where de is the diameter of influence and t is the real time for the different known value of cr have been generated. A method has been developed wherein both the theoretical and experimental behaviors of soils undergoing consolidation with radial drainage can be simultaneously compared and studied on the same plot. The experimental log10(d2e/t) versus Ur curves have been compared with the theoretical curves. Effects of initial compression, secondary compression, and duration of load increment are studied. Simple procedures are presented for calculating the values of cr using the experimental log10(d2e/t) versus Ur curves. A comparative study of the coefficient of consolidation and the coefficient of permeability between the cases of vertical and radial drainage has been done.

Book Effects of Anisotropic Versus Isotropic Consolidation in Consolidated undrained Triaxial Compression Tests of Cohesive Soils

Download or read book Effects of Anisotropic Versus Isotropic Consolidation in Consolidated undrained Triaxial Compression Tests of Cohesive Soils written by Frank C. Townsend and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a series of consolidated-undrained (CU) triaxial compression tests performed on normally consolidated and overconsolidated specimes of two clays consolidated both isotropically (ICU tests) and anisotropically (ACU tests) are presented and analyzed in this report. The specimens were trimmed from samples of Vicksburg Buckshot clay (LL = 57) and a clay from the East Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee (EABPL) project area (LL = 79), both of which had been consolidated from a slurry in large-diameter consolidometers under a maximum vertical consolidation pressure of 3.0 kg/sq cm. Data presented include stress-strain curves, pore pressure observations, final water content distributions within the specimens, and shear strength envelopes based on total and effective stresses. Test results indicate that the change in volume during consolidation and the water content at the end of consolidation are not a unique function of the vertical consolidation stresses but are related to the mean effective consolidation stress. Total stress envelopes based on Taylor's method of deriving strengths of anisotropically consolidated specimens from test results obtained from isotropically consolidated specimens slightly underestimate observed values. In this context, Taylor's method is an appropriate means of predicting strengths for various K sub c ratios from conventional ICU tests. Use of hyperbolic stress-strain relationships derived from ICU tests in finite element codes for ACU conditions will lead to erroneous results. Further testing of anisotropically consolidated soils under stress systems that better simulate in situ conditions is needed.
