However, the extent of competition dependent on the number of operating firms in the industry and governing reforms and regulations; susceptible by Consolidation and Deregulatory measures. Given a scenario where both operates; one reducing the number of operating firms on a justification for stronger units and the other intended to liberalize and enhance competition, what impact do these have on the level of competition? Is firm number over-rated in the context of market competition? This Book delves into investigating these issues by considering both consolidation and deregulation impacts on the level of competition in a banking industry.

Book Competition Policy for Modern Banks

Download or read book Competition Policy for Modern Banks written by Mr.Lev Ratnovski and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional bank competition policy seeks to balance efficiency with incentives to take risk. The main tools are rules guiding entry/exit and consolidation of banks. This paper seeks to refine this view in light of recent changes to financial services provision. Modern banking is largely market-based and contestable. Consequently, banks in advanced economies today have structurally low charter values and high incentives to take risk. In such an environment, traditional policies that seek to affect the degree of competition by focusing on market structure (i.e. concentration) may have limited effect. We argue that bank competition policy should be reoriented to deal with the too-big-to-fail (TBTF) problem. It should also focus on the permissible scope of activities rather than on market structure of banks. And following a crisis, competition policy should facilitate resolution by temporarily allowing higher concentration and government control of banks.

Book On Bank Consolidation in a Currency Union

Download or read book On Bank Consolidation in a Currency Union written by Fabio Di Vittorio and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper focuses on the impact of diversification on bank performance and how consolidation through mergers and acquisitions (M&A) affects the banking sector’s stability in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU). The paper finds that a lower level of loan portfolio diversification explains higher non-performing loans and earnings volatility of indigenous banks, as compared to foreign competitors in the ECCU. We then simulate bank mergers both within and across ECCU countries by combining individual banks’ balance sheets. The simulation shows that a typical indigenous bank could better diversify against its idiosyncratic risk by merging with other banks across the border. In addition, we point out that M&A, leading to a more asymmetric banking sector, may increase systemic risk.

Book The Banking Industry in the Emerging Market Economies

Download or read book The Banking Industry in the Emerging Market Economies written by Bank for International Settlements and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in the banking industry in emerging economies, such as competition and consolidation, and their implications for systemic stability, were discussed at a meeting of senior central bankers held at the BIS in December 2000. Revised versions of the overview paper prepared by the BIS for the meeting, and papers prepared by the attendees on developments in their own economies, are included in this volume of BIS Papers. The developments are being driven by technological innovation, deregulation and changes in corporate behaviour, in some cases accentuated by recent banking crises. Important aspects include privatisation of state-owned banks, mergers of domestic banks and entry of foreign banks. Although prepared independently, in some ways this volume discussing developments in emerging economies complements the G10 volume Report on Consolidation in the Financial Sector which discusses developments in the advanced economies.

Book Competition and Stability in Banking

Download or read book Competition and Stability in Banking written by Xavier Vives and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinguished economist examines competition, regulation, and stability in today's global banks Does too much competition in banking hurt society? What policies can best protect and stabilize banking without stifling it? Institutional responses to such questions have evolved over time, from interventionist regulatory control after the Great Depression to the liberalization policies that started in the United States in the 1970s. The global financial crisis of 2007–2009, which originated from an oversupply of credit, once again raised questions about excessive banking competition and what should be done about it. Competition and Stability in Banking addresses the critical relationships between competition, regulation, and stability, and the implications of coordinating banking regulations with competition policies. Xavier Vives argues that while competition is not responsible for fragility in banking, there are trade-offs between competition and stability. Well-designed regulations would alleviate these trade-offs but not eliminate them, and the specificity of competition in banking should be accounted for. Vives argues that regulation and competition policy should be coordinated, with tighter prudential requirements in more competitive situations, but he also shows that supervisory and competition authorities should stand separate from each other, each pursuing its own objective. Vives reviews the theory and empirics of banking competition, drawing on up-to-date analysis that incorporates the characteristics of modern market-based banking, and he looks at regulation, competition policies, and crisis interventions in Europe and the United States, as well as in emerging economies. Focusing on why banking competition policies are necessary, Competition and Stability in Banking examines regulation's impact on the industry's efficiency and effectiveness.

Book Innovation Deregulation and the Life Cycle of a Financial Service Industry

Download or read book Innovation Deregulation and the Life Cycle of a Financial Service Industry written by Fumiko Hayashi and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines innovation, deregulation, and firm dynamics over the life cycle of the U.S. ATM and debit card industry. In doing so, we construct a dynamic equilibrium model to study how a major product innovation (introducing the new debit card function) interacted with banking deregulation drove the industry shakeout. Calibrating the model to a novel dataset on ATM network entry, exit, size, and product offerings shows that our theory fits the quantitative pattern of the industry well. The model also allows us to conduct counterfactual analyses to evaluate the respective roles that innovation and deregulation played in the industry evolution.

Book Bank Competition and Financial Stability

Download or read book Bank Competition and Financial Stability written by Mr.Gianni De Nicolo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study versions of a general equilibrium banking model with moral hazard under either constant or increasing returns to scale of the intermediation technology used by banks to screen and/or monitor borrowers. If the intermediation technology exhibits increasing returns to scale, or it is relatively efficient, then perfect competition is optimal and supports the lowest feasible level of bank risk. Conversely, if the intermediation technology exhibits constant returns to scale, or is relatively inefficient, then imperfect competition and intermediate levels of bank risks are optimal. These results are empirically relevant and carry significant implications for financial policy.

Book Bank Size and Systemic Risk

Download or read book Bank Size and Systemic Risk written by Mr.Luc Laeven and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed SDN documents the evolution of bank size and activities over the past 20 years. It discusses whether this evolution can be explained by economies of scale or “too big to fail” subsidies. The paper then presents evidence on the extent to which bank size and market-based activities contribute to systemic risk. The paper concludes with policy messages in the area of capital regulation and activity restrictions to reduce the systemic risk posed by large banks. The analysis of the paper complements earlier Fund work, including SDN 13/04 and the recent GFSR chapter on “too big to fail” subsidies, and its policy message is in line with this earlier work.

Book Cost Benefit Analysis of Leaning Against the Wind

Download or read book Cost Benefit Analysis of Leaning Against the Wind written by Mr.Lars E. O. Svensson and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Leaning against the wind” (LAW) with a higher monetary policy interest rate may have benefits in terms of lower real debt growth and associated lower probability of a financial crisis but has costs in terms of higher unemployment and lower inflation, importantly including a higher cost of a crisis when the economy is weaker. For existing empirical estimates, costs exceed benefits by a substantial margin, even if monetary policy is nonneutral and permanently affects real debt. Somewhat surprisingly, less effective macroprudential policy and generally a credit boom, with resulting higher probability, severity, or duration of a crisis, increases costs of LAW more than benefits, thus further strengthening the strong case against LAW.
