Book Theoretical Prediction of Pressure Distributions on Nonlifting Airfoils at High Subsonic Speeds

Download or read book Theoretical Prediction of Pressure Distributions on Nonlifting Airfoils at High Subsonic Speeds written by John R. Spreiter and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical pressure distributions on nonlifting circular-arc airfoils in two-dimensional flows with high subsonic free-stream velocity are found by determining approximate solutions, through an iteration process, of an integral equation for transonic flow proposed by Oswatitsch. The integral equation stems directly from the small disturbance theory for transonic flow. This method of analysis possesses the advantage of remaining in the physical, rather than hodograph, variables and can be applied to airfoils having curved surfaces. After discussion of the derivation of the integral equation and qualitative aspects of the solution, results of calculations carried out for circular-arc airfoils in flows with free-stream Mach numbers up to unity are described.

Book Interaction of Moving Shocks and Hot Layers

Download or read book Interaction of Moving Shocks and Hot Layers written by Robert V. Hess and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper treats the interaction between hot layers extended along the wall and normal or oblique shocks moving over them. Emphasis is on the cases of large hot-layer temperatures and strong shock waves for which small-perturbation theories are not applicable. A variety of possible interaction patterns are described. Of greatest interest are the more extreme cases when the hot layer is forced to accumulate in a growing bubble-like region bound to the moving shock, and some of the cold air above the layer moves around the bubble and interposes a high-speed forward-moving cold jet between the wall and the bubble. For some cases, especially with oblique shocks, this reverse jet may not form. Mixing will eventually limit the size of the bubble and make its characteristics more nearly like those of the more familiar separation bubbles. The effects of viscosity at the wall remains essentially different, however, since the shock is moving relative to the wall.

Book Strength and Ductility of Bainitic Steels

Download or read book Strength and Ductility of Bainitic Steels written by Donald H. Desy and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the factors believed to affect the strength and ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of bainitic steels, including mean ferrite path and degree of internal strain, have been studied. Strength was measured by diamond pyramid hardness, and transition temperature was obtained from a tensile impact test on small notched specimens. Seven laboratory heats of carbon-molybdenum steel and two heats of carbon steel were transformed isothermally to bainite at various temperatures and tested. Mean-ferrite-path measurements were made on electron micrographs of three of these steels. The mean ferrite path was found to have only a slight effect on the strength of bainite and no effect on the transition temperature. Preliminary measurements of X-ray line broadening indicate that the degree of internal strain may be the controlling factor in determining the strength of bainite. The transition temperatures of the bainites fell within a band between -80 and -160 degrees C and did not vary regularly with hardness, carbon or alloy content, or mean ferrite path. In the SAE 1062 steel at high strength levels, bainite has a transition temperature lower than that of tempered martensite at the same strength level.

Book An Experimental Investigation of Transonic Flow Past Two dimensional Wedge and Circular arc Sections Using a Mach Zehnder Interferometer

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Transonic Flow Past Two dimensional Wedge and Circular arc Sections Using a Mach Zehnder Interferometer written by Arthur Earl Bryson and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interferometer measurements are given of the flow fields near two-dimensional wedge and circular-arc sections at zero angle of attack. Pressure distributions and drag coefficients as functions of Mach number were obtained and the wedge data are compared with theory. It is shown that the local Mach number at any point on the surface of a finite three dimensional body or an unswept two-dimensional body, moving through an infinite fluid, has a stationary value at Mach number 1 and, in fact, remains nearly constant for a range of speeds below and above Mach number 1. On the basis of this concept and the experimental data, pressure distributions and drag coefficients for the wedge and circular-arc sections are presented throughout the entire transonic range of velocities.

Book Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations written by Roland Glowinski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 250 years partial di?erential equations have been clearly the most important tool available to mankind in order to understand a large variety of phenomena, natural at ?rst and then those originating from - man activity and technological development. Mechanics, physics and their engineering applications were the ?rst to bene?t from the impact of partial di?erential equations on modeling and design, but a little less than a century ago the Schr ̈ odinger equation was the key opening the door to the application of partial di?erential equations to quantum chemistry, for small atomic and molecular systems at ?rst, but then for systems of fast growing complexity. The place of partial di?erential equations in mathematics is a very particular one: initially, the partial di?erential equations modeling natural phenomena were derived by combining calculus with physical reasoning in order to - press conservation laws and principles in partial di?erential equation form, leading to the wave equation, the heat equation, the equations of elasticity, the Euler and Navier–Stokes equations for ?uids, the Maxwell equations of electro-magnetics, etc. It is in order to solve ‘constructively’ the heat equation that Fourier developed the series bearing his name in the early 19th century; Fourier series (and later integrals) have played (and still play) a fundamental roleinbothpureandappliedmathematics, includingmanyareasquiteremote from partial di?erential equations. On the other hand, several areas of mathematics such as di?erential ge- etry have bene?ted from their interactions with partial di?erential equations.

Book Investigation of Statistical Nature of Fatigue Properties

Download or read book Investigation of Statistical Nature of Fatigue Properties written by E. Epremian and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive fatigue tests were made on annealed Armco iron and plain carbon and alloy steels heat-treated to different strengths and microstructures. Statistics of fatigue-fracture curves and endurance limits were determined from the experimental data obtained and, for various other materials, from a survey of literature. The results were analyzed to show the relative effects of various metallurgical factors on the statistical nature of fatigue properties. Other phases of the problem studied include: dependence of statistical variation in fatigue life on stress level in the fracture range, statistics for location of crack initiation, size effect, understressing effect, and the form and method of plotting the S-N diagram.

Book A Summary of Meteorological Conditions Associated with Aircraft Icing and a Proposed Method of Selecting Design Criterions for Ice protection Equipment

Download or read book A Summary of Meteorological Conditions Associated with Aircraft Icing and a Proposed Method of Selecting Design Criterions for Ice protection Equipment written by Paul T. Hacker and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on the meteorological parameters pertinent to the aircraft icing problem are so summarized as to give the frequency of occurrence of observed icing situations according to two of the parameters. The summarized data indicate that statistical relations exist between some of the parameters. A method, based upon the collection efficiency of an airfoil and the frequency occurrence of icing situations with various liquid-water contents and mean-effective droplet sizes, is proposed for the selection of design criterions for ice-protection equipment. The method provides a convenient means of calculating the percenteage of icing encounters in which the water collection exceeds the design rate.
