Book Considerations Concerning Fatigue Life of Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Considerations Concerning Fatigue Life of Metal Matrix Composites written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since metal matrix composites (MMC) are composed from two very distinct materials each having their own physical and mechanical properties, it is feasible that the fatigue resistance depends on the strength of the weaker constituent. Based on this assumption, isothermal fatigue lives of several MMC's were analyzed utilizing a fatigue life diagram approach. For each MMC, the fatigue life diagram was quantified using the mechanical properties of its constituents. The fatigue life regions controlled by fiber fracture and matrix were also quantitatively defined. Radhakrishnan, V. M. and Bartolotta, Paul A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive review of its kind on the long-term behaviour of composite materials and structures subjected to time variable mechanical, thermal, and chemical influences, a subject of critical importance to the design, development, and certification of high performance engineering structures. Specific topics examined include damage, damage characterization, and damage mechanics; fatigue testing and evaluation; fatigue behaviour of short and long fibre reinforced polymer and metal matrix materials; viscoelastic and moisture effects; delamination; statistical considerations; the modeling of cumulative damage development; and life prediction. The volume provides an extensive presentation of data, discussions, and comparisons on the behaviour of the major types of material systems in current use, as well as extensive analysis and modeling (including the first presentation of work not found elsewhere). The book will be of special interest to engineers concerned with reliability, maintainability, safety, certification, and damage tolerance; to materials developers concerned with making materials for long-term service, especially under severe loads and environments, and to lecturers, students, and researchers involved in material system design, performance, solid mechanics, fatigue, durability, and composite materials. The scope of the work extends from entry level material to the frontiers of the subject.

Book Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites

Download or read book Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites written by R.L. Carlson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-11-30 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites provides a balanced treatment of the phenomenon of fatigue in metals, nonmetals and composites with polymeric, metallic and ceramic matrices. The applicability of the safe life philosophy of design is examined for each of the materials. Attention is also focused on the stable crack growth phase of fatigue and differences in the operative mechanisms for the various classes of materials are considered. The impacts of these differences on the development of damage tolerance strategies are examined. Among topics discussed are; variable amplitude loading with tensile and compressive overload; closure obstruction; bridging mechanisms; mixed mode states; small cracks; delamination mechanisms and environmental conditions. The arrangement and presentation of the topics are such that An Introduction to Fatigue in Metals and Composites can serve as a course text for mechanical, civil, aeronautical and astronautical engineering and material science courses as well as a reference for engineers who are concerned with fatigue testing and aircraft, automobile and engine design.

Book Metal matrix composites Processing and Interfaces

Download or read book Metal matrix composites Processing and Interfaces written by R Everett and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Matrix Composites: Processing and Interfaces provides a unified source of information on metal matrix composites (MMCs). This book contains three parts. Part 1 provides the introductory overview, focusing on the historical perspective on the state of the composites field. The synthesis and processing details on some standard and novel techniques used to fabricate composites are discussed in Part 2. Part 3 is devoted to reviewing techniques in probing, modeling, and modifying composite interfaces. Other topics include the diffusion brazing techniques, chemical vapor deposition, and in situ reinforcement of MMCs. The deformation processing of metal mixtures and optimizing properties of deformation-processed metal/metal composites are also covered in this text. This publication is useful to engineering students studying the processing and interfaces of MMCs.

Book Damage and Failure of Composite Materials

Download or read book Damage and Failure of Composite Materials written by Ramesh Talreja and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding damage and failure of composite materials is critical for reliable and cost-effective engineering design. Bringing together materials mechanics and modeling, this book provides a complete guide to damage, fatigue and failure of composite materials. Early chapters focus on the underlying principles governing composite damage, reviewing basic equations and mechanics theory, before describing mechanisms of damage such as cracking, breakage and buckling. In subsequent chapters, the physical mechanisms underlying the formation and progression of damage under mechanical loads are described with ample experimental data, and micro- and macro-level damage models are combined. Finally, fatigue of composite materials is discussed using fatigue-life diagrams. While there is a special emphasis on polymer matrix composites, metal and ceramic matrix composites are also described. Outlining methods for more reliable design of composite structures, this is a valuable resource for engineers and materials scientists in industry and academia.
