Book Liquid Swine Manure as a Nitrogen Source for Corn and Soybean Production

Download or read book Liquid Swine Manure as a Nitrogen Source for Corn and Soybean Production written by Sudipta Rakshit and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) manure is a large crop nutrient resource in Iowa, but one that should be managed appropriately to gain maximum effectiveness. A multi-year project was initiated on producers' fields to determine the impact of liquid swine manure-N on corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production. Liquid swine manure was injected or broadcast applied (two sites) in field-length strips. The intended rates for corn-soybean were 0, 84, and 168 kg total manure-N ha−1, and for corn-corn and soybean-corn were 0, 112, and 224 kg total-N ha−1. Manure samples were collected during application, and in conjunction with applicator calibration, used to calculate total-N rates. Four fertilizer-N rates (0, 45, 90, and 135 kg N ha−1 for corn-soybean and 0, 67, 135, and 202 kg N ha−1 for corn-corn) were applied to small split-plots within each manure strip to measure response to additional N. Corn N status indicators and grain yield showed frequent and large increase to the low manure-N rate. Smaller additional yield increase was found with the high liquid swine manure-N rates at the most responsive sites. Corn typically produced highest yield increase to additional fertilizer-N when manure was not applied, frequent increase with the low manure rate (magnitude depending upon the site N responsiveness), and no response with the high manure rate. While it was not possible to determine the specific first-year availability of the liquid swine manure-N, we found no reason to estimate it is much different than fully crop available. Liquid swine manure application increased soybean grain yield at several sites, and did not reduce yield. When manure total-N was applied to soybean at rates

Book Agronomic Economic and Ecological Response of Corn and Soybean Production Systems to Winter Cover Cropping and Minimum Tillage Management in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley

Download or read book Agronomic Economic and Ecological Response of Corn and Soybean Production Systems to Winter Cover Cropping and Minimum Tillage Management in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley written by Thomas Beauregard Badon and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter fallow corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production systems are susceptible to erosion and agrochemical transport. This research determined the effects of Cover Crop Minimum Tillage (CCMT) on erosion and agrochemical transport from corn-soybean rotations at field scale, while assessing impacts to agroeconomics and irrigation in Mississippi’s Delta Region. CCMT did not affect total suspended solids (p = 0.53), total inorganic phosphorus (TIP) (p = 0.30), or total nitrogen (TN) (p = 0.25) loads, but did reduce TIP (p = 0.018), TN (p = 0.011), and nitrate-nitrite (p = 0.007) concentrations. An economic loss of $281/ha with no effect on yield (p = 0.09), irrigation use efficiency (p = 0.38), or consumptive water use (p = 0.83) was observed. CCMT will not improve profitability of corn-soybean rotations in the Delta and transitioning from fallowing to CCMT will have varying effects on erosion and agrochemical transport.

Book Zinc and Phosphorus Nutrition of Corn Zea Mays L and Soybean Glycine Max when By products are Applied

Download or read book Zinc and Phosphorus Nutrition of Corn Zea Mays L and Soybean Glycine Max when By products are Applied written by Jorge David Hernandez and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four seeds were planted per pot and two weeks after emergence and the two least vigorous plants were removed. Nine weeks after emergence, the plants were harvested and determined P and Zn and CA content. The Swine manure increased dry matter in corn plants (roots, and whole plant) and P uptake. Zinc did not increase either dry matter production, Zn uptake, or P from uptake. Carbonic anhydrase did not change among the treatments indicating no active Zn response. Phosphorus and Zn uptake in response to swine manure was greatest when Zn was not added. Zinc application was not necessary in high P testing soils when swine manure was applied. The results indicated that PFFB did not cause either P or Zn deficiencies in the crops. The high levels of P and Zn appeared to have no affect on either P or Zn absorption by corn and soybean in the experiments.

Book Growth Nitrogen Utilization and Energy Production of Grain and Switchgrass Management Systems on Varying Topsoil Depth of Claypan Soils

Download or read book Growth Nitrogen Utilization and Energy Production of Grain and Switchgrass Management Systems on Varying Topsoil Depth of Claypan Soils written by Eric B. Allphin (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depth to claypan (DTC) plays an important role for Midwest claypan soils in storing plant-available water for grain crops, but it is unknown how this same soil property affects switchgrass (Panicum virgatum. L.) growth and nitrogen (N) utilization. This research assessed corn (Zea mays L), soybean (Glycine max. L. Merr.) and switchgrass productivity as influenced by the DTC. Plot research was initiated in 2009 in Columbia, Missouri on a range of DTC. Canopy reflectance sensing early in the growing season was effective at estimating yield (p=

Book Handbook of Plant Nutrition

Download or read book Handbook of Plant Nutrition written by Allen V. Barker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burgeoning demand on the world food supply, coupled with concern over the use of chemical fertilizers, has led to an accelerated interest in the practice of precision agriculture. This practice involves the careful control and monitoring of plant nutrition to maximize the rate of growth and yield of crops, as well as their nutritional value.
