Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Relationship between dental caries in the primary teeth and developmental defects of enamel in the permanent successors Submitted by ZHENG Cun Ge for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in October 2002 The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between the presence of developmental defects of enamel in permanent teeth and the caries status of their predecessor teeth among a cohort of Chinese children. The caries status of the primary teeth of these children had been recorded annually from 1992 to 1996, when they were 3 to 6 years old. A total of 250 children aged approximately 12 years who had been involved in the previous longitudinal study were re-examined in 2001. The fluoride concentration in the drinking water in the study site was approximately 0.1 ppm and fluoride supplements were unavailable. The modified FDI (DDE) Index for developmental defects of enamel (DDE) was used to record defects on all of the surfaces of the permanent incisors, canines and premolars. Prior to the examinations, the tooth surfaces were cleaned and dried. The light source was a fiber-optic examination light. Overall, 76% of the study children had one or more teeth affected by DDE and the tooth prevalence was 16%. Diffuse opacities (10.6%) occurred in more teeth than demarcated opacities (5.8%). Hypoplasia was found in only 1.3% of the examined teeth. The maxillary central incisors were affected most frequently by diffuse opacities, while the maxillary premolars were affected most frequently by demarcated opacities. It was found that demarcated opacities and hypoplasia in the permanent teeth had a strong relationship with the presence and size of dental caries in their primary predecessor teeth. Furthermore, the earlier the age when caries occurred in the primary teeth the higher the chance that demarcated opacities and hypoplasia would occur on their permanent successor teeth. A statistically significant relationship between the presence of caries in the primary teeth and diffuse opacities on their permanent successor teeth was found for the incisors but not the canines or molars.
