Book The Conrad Weiser Area

Download or read book The Conrad Weiser Area written by Carl Ganster and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1729, John Conrad Weiser, the most famous citizen of the area, joined his fellow Germans and built his homestead just east of present-day Womelsdorf. The settlement grew in the 1800s with a turnpike, a canal, a railroad, and more highways. Villages were started, and three became boroughs. Womelsdorf is the oldest borough in the western part of Berks County, while Robesonia and Wernersville were railroad towns laid out in the 1850s. Some remain villages to this day. Stouchsburg grew up around the turnpike and the canal. Charming Forge was the first industry in the area, and the village still looks like it did 200 years ago. The remaining parts of the area are rural, and some of the best growing soil is found in the Conrad Weiser area. In 1954, seven municipalities joined to form the Conrad Weiser Area School District. This book covers photographs from 1900 until the 1960s and includes all municipalities.

Book Conrad Weiser

Download or read book Conrad Weiser written by Paul A. W. Wallace and published by Distelfink Press. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If one man could be said to exemplify in his character the promise of America's greatness, that man was Conrad Weiser, Pennsylvania frontiersman of the Colonial period. This biography of one of the key figures in our national history reveals a personality of almost legendary nobility and charm, whose democratic principles actually helped shape the United States of America. A man of many talents and interests--farmer, soldier, churchman, political leader, father of a large family--Weiser is significant chiefly as the great champion and friend of the Indians of the Six Nations during the fateful early days of the country. Servicing as official interpreter and mediator between them and the English authorities, he brought harmony between the two factions time and again. He was responsible for keeping the important Iroquois tribes neutral during the French and Indian War.

Book German Footprints in America

Download or read book German Footprints in America written by Sudie Doggett Wike and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often overlooked because of their high degree of assimilation, people of German descent are actually the largest single ethnic group in the United States. German culture is far more rooted in America than commonly thought. For example, hot dogs, hamburgers and beer wouldn't be classic American staples without German immigrants. In addition to enormous contributions to mainstream beer culture and food culture, they have also added to America's agriculture, religious values and economy. This history highlights German contributions to America, examining their roles from the earliest colonies through the settlement of the Old Northwest and past the Interwar Period. While most German immigrants belonged to the main Lutheran and Reformed churches, a diverse cast of immigrant groups is encountered, including Moravians, Huguenots, and Rhinelanders. Through them, discover the long-standing history of the German descendants and their impact in the United States beginning more than 200 years ago.

Download or read book The First Frontier written by Scott Weidensaul and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Excitement abounds in Scott Weidensaul’s detailed history of the first clashes between European settlers and Native Americans on the East Coast.”—Nancy Marie Brown, author of The Far Traveler: Voyages of a Viking Woman Frontier: the word carries the inevitable scent of the West. But before Custer or Lewis and Clark, before the first Conestoga wagons rumbled across the Plains, it was the East that marked the frontier—the boundary between complex Native cultures and the first colonizing Europeans. Here is the older, wilder, darker history of a time when the land between the Atlantic and the Appalachians was contested ground—when radically different societies adopted and adapted the ways of the other, while struggling for control of what all considered to be their land. The First Frontier traces two and a half centuries of history through poignant, mostly unheralded personal stories—like that of a Harvard-educated Indian caught up in seventeenth-century civil warfare, a mixed-blood interpreter trying to straddle his white and Native heritage, and a Puritan woman wielding a scalping knife whose bloody deeds still resonate uneasily today. It is the first book in years to paint a sweeping picture of the Eastern frontier, combining vivid storytelling with the latest research to bring to life modern America’s tumultuous, uncertain beginnings. “Exciting and revealing . . . a stirring panorama of the land and the peoples who made their mark on it from the late sixteenth to eighteenth centuries . . . This is a rich tableau that both excites and informs about the forging of early American society.”—Booklist “Weidensaul’s delightful storytelling brings to life the terrors and hopes of the earliest days of America.”—Publishers Weekly
