Book Gilded Age Cato

Download or read book Gilded Age Cato written by Charles W. Calhoun and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Union general, federal judge, presidential contender, and cabinet officer—Walter Q. Gresham of Indiana stands as an enigmatic character in the politics of the Gilded Age, one who never seemed comfortable in the offices he sought. This first scholarly biography not only follows the turns of his career but seeks also to find the roots of his disaffection. Entering politics as a Whig, Gresham shortly turned to help organize the new Republican Party and was a contender for its presidential nomination in the 1880s. But he became popular with labor and with the Populists and closed his political career by serving as secretary of state under Grover Cleveland. In reviewing Gresham's conduct of foreign affairs, Charles W. Calhoun disputes the widely held view that he was an economic expansionist who paved the way for imperialism. Gresham, instead, is seen here as a traditionalist who tried to steer the country away from entanglements abroad. It is this traditionalism that Calhoun finds to be the clue to Gresham's career. Troubled with self-doubt, Gresham, like the Cato of old, sought strength in a return to the republican virtues of the Revolutionary generation. Based on a thorough use of the available resources, this will stand as the definitive biography of an important figure in American political and diplomatic history, and in its portrayal of a man out of step with his times it sheds a different light on the politics of the Gilded Age.

Book John A Logan

Download or read book John A Logan written by James Pickett Jones and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2001-03-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "James P. Jones ... uses newspaper accounts, private letters, and the records of Congress to examine Major General John A. Logan's return to his political and legislative career after the Civil War. Logan emerged from the national conflict a military hero and uncommitted to any political party ... By 1884 his personality and fiercely defended principles had earned him the vice-presidential nomination on the ill-fated Republican ticket. Many writers on this period have portrayed Logan as a corrupt politician, but Jones successfully clears the Illinoisan's record"--Description of previous edition.

Book Surveillance and Spies in the Civil War

Download or read book Surveillance and Spies in the Civil War written by Stephen E. Towne and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveillance and Spies in the Civil War represents pathbreaking research on the rise of U.S. Army intelligence operations in the Midwest during the American Civil War and counters long-standing assumptions about Northern politics and society. At the beginning of the rebellion, state governors in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois cooperated with federal law enforcement officials in various attempts—all failed—to investigate reports of secret groups and individuals who opposed the Union war effort. Starting in 1862, army commanders took it upon themselves to initiate investigations of antiwar sentiment in those states. By 1863, several of them had established intelligence operations staffed by hired civilian detectives and by soldiers detailed from their units to chase down deserters and draft dodgers, to maintain surveillance on suspected persons and groups, and to investigate organized resistance to the draft. By 1864, these spies had infiltrated secret organizations that, sometimes in collaboration with Confederate rebels, aimed to subvert the war effort. Stephen E. Towne is the first to thoroughly explore the role and impact of Union spies against Confederate plots in the North. This new analysis invites historians to delve more deeply into the fabric of the Northern wartime experience and reinterpret the period based on broader archival evidence.

Book War upon Our Border

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen I. Rockenbach
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 2016-11-09
  • ISBN : 0813939194
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book War upon Our Border written by Stephen I. Rockenbach and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War upon Our Border examines the experiences of two Ohio River Valley communities during the turmoil and social upheaval of the American Civil War. Although on opposite sides of the border between slavery and freedom, Corydon, Indiana, and Frankfort, Kentucky, shared a legacy of white settlement and a distinct western identity, which fostered unity and emphasized cooperation during the first year of the war. But subsequent guerrilla raids, military occupation, economic hardship, political turmoil, and racial tension ultimately divided citizens living on either side of the river border. Once a conduit for all kinds of relationships, the Ohio River became a barrier dividing North and South by the end of the conflict. Centered on the experience of local politicians, civic leaders, laborers, soldiers, and civilians, this combined social and military history addresses major interpretative debates, including how citizens chose allegiances, what role slavery played in soldier and civilian motivation, and the nature of life on the home front. Examining manuscripts, newspapers, and government documents, War upon Our Border employs a microhistorical approach to link the experiences of common people with the sweeping national events of the Civil War era. The resulting study reveals the lingering effect of the war’s memory and how the effort to construct a new regional dynamic continues to shape popular conceptions of the period.
