Book OVercoming Depression in Teens and Pre Teens

Download or read book OVercoming Depression in Teens and Pre Teens written by Richard L. Travis and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Completely Updated in December/2016**The treatment modalities for pre-teen and teenager depression require a multi-factorial approach. Cognitive-behavioral therapy in combination with pharmacotherapy is the main-stay treatment option commonly used today for treating depression. While these drugs are effective in treating depression, careful monitoring of the dosage is extremely important, especially in young children. Holistic therapy can be effective in treating "normal depression" and might include: proper diet, exercise, supplements, emotional expression through acting, singing, and writing, etc. Parents and siblings of depressed children play a very important role in helping these relatives deal with their depression. They need support, concern, care, attention, and reassurance as well as comfort from close family. Depression can occur in a familial pattern causing a string of depressed children and parents in the family. This may be disastrous, and the services of a family mental health professional and perhaps psychiatrist may be needed. Depression is treatable! The first step is to recognize it. Then develop an "action plan" which includes a professional assessment, if necessary. The best thing a parent can do for their child is to provide a safe environment to get them to talk about their feelings. Never underplay a child's sadness.

Book Trouble in My Head

Book excerpt: Mathilde Monaque developed severe depression when she was just 14. The eldest in a family of six and an exceptionally bright and gifted little girl, the discovery shook her family to the core. Trouble in My Head is Mathilde's tender and illuminating account of her struggle to surface from a disease that could have taken her life. With remarkable sensitivity and lucidity she describes her experience of depression, her days in the teenage hospital and her battle to conquer the disease. Mathilde's perspective as a sufferer of teenage depression is unique. Unlike adult depression which involves feelings of guilt, Mathilde describes teenage depression as a breaking down of certainties, the fear of being oneself, the fear of not loving and of not being loved. Adults and teenagers alike will find inspiration and insight in her touching and remarkable account.
