El mundo conocido, sin embargo, en el tiempo de Jesús estaba en gran parte bajo el dominio romano. Esto era cierto en la tierra donde nació Jesús. El Imperio Romano estaba entonces relativamente en paz, y fue la advertencia de Pablo que los primeros cristianos debían mantener esa paz. La amplia soberanía de Roma dio a los apóstoles de Cristo acceso a diferentes naciones, muchas de las cuales se habían civilizado bajo la influencia romana. Pero el monoteísmo puro solo existía entre los judíos. Todas las demás naciones tenían una variedad de dioses y formas peculiares de adoración. En la mayoría de las religiones paganas había elementos de verdad y belleza, pero carecían de principios éticos y de aplicación moral a la vida. La mayor parte de su oficio sacerdotal era una imposición vulgar sobre la ignorancia y la credulidad de la gente común. Las filosofías predominantes, que, entre las más ilustradas, tomaron el lugar de la religión, fueron las griegas, adoptadas también por los romanos y las orientales, con numerosos seguidores en Persia, Siria, Caldea, Egipto, y también entre los judíos. Pero los filósofos se dividieron en sectas antagónicas. Fuera de tales condiciones, ninguna religión práctica podría desarrollarse. En las doctrinas del budismo se encontraba el espíritu y el propósito de un pueblo devoto y humanitario, pero la intrincada mitología y las limitaciones raciales y de otro tipo del budismo imposibilitaron que, aunque conquistó la mitad de Asia, se convirtiera en una fe universal.La condición de los judíos en este período era poco mejor que la de otros pueblos. Entre los judíos había una falta de unidad intelectual, y sus ideales morales habían sido desvalorizadas. Vivían oprimidos por Herodes, rey de Judea, Galilea, Samaria e Idumea entre los años 37 y 4 antes de Cristo en calidad de vasallo de Roma; este, aunque profesó ser judío, imitaba a quienes abiertamente despreciaban toda religión y cedió a las influencias del lujo romano y el libertinaje que se extendió sobre Palestina. Aunque todavía estaba dirigida por los sacerdotes y levitas y bajo la mirada del sanedrín o senado, la religión judía había perdido gran parte de su carácter anterior. Al igual que la filosofía, estaba en disputa con sectas rivales. La estricta observancia de la ley mosaica y el cumplimiento de los ritos y deberes prescriptivos se consideraban en general como la suma de la religión.La raza de los profetas parecía extinta hasta que la profecía fue revivida en Juan el Bautista. Los sucesores de los patriotas macabeos no estaban animados por su espíritu. Había una expectativa generalizada y apasionada de un mesías nacional, pero no un mesías como el que Juan proclamó y Jesús demostró ser; más bien un poderoso guerrero y vindicador de la libertad judía. Galilea, el primer hogar de Jesús, se conmovió especialmente con fervor mesiánico. En tal condición de la mente nacional, y en tal etapa de la historia del imperio romano, parece natural el surgimiento de un maestro como Jesús, un mesías espiritual, surgido para ser el libertador, no solo de un pueblo, sino del mundo mismo. Tras el paso de Jesús por la Tierra, sus seguidores prefirieron muchas veces morir antes que renunciar a su nombre. Este libro contiene el relato del nacimiento de la religión fundada en su honor.
