Book excerpt: Alors que la circulation s'est imposée comme un des paradigmes majeurs du fonctionnement des sociétés contemporaines, mes recherches s'attachent à comprendre les spécificités de l'économie des mobilités à l'époque pré-industrielle marquée par une densification des mouvements, une baisse des coûts de transport et une accélération des vitesses. Ma démarche s'inscrit dans une triple perspective qui articule des dynamiques historiques, des logiques institutionnelles et l'organisation de l'espace. Sont ainsi étudiés les flux et les trafics qui structurent la circulation, les valeurs qu'elle véhicule et les enjeux politiques qui la sous-tendent. Le manuscrit inédit sur la corvée royale au XVIIIe siècle, dite aussi des grands chemins, qui contraignait les habitants des communautés riveraines d'un axe routier à fournir quelques jours de travail pour sa construction ou son entretien, s 'inscrit dans l'analyse que je mène plus largement sur les modes de financement des infrastructures de transport. L'objectif de ce travail est d'interroger le contraste entre une représentation critique de la corvée décriée comme une institution arbitraire et inefficiente, et l'extension du réseau routier à la fin de l'Ancien Régime. Si la décision de recourir à la corvée en travail et son fonctionnement présentent une rationalité dans le contexte dans lequel elle s'inscrit, il m'importe aussi de comprendre les raisons qui ont conduit l'Etat à opter pour la commutation dans la seconde moitié du siècle. La transition entre une prestation en nature attachée à un statut fiscal et un impôt destiné à financer du travail salarié constitue plus largement un observatoire de l'action politique, de dynamiques économiques et de représentations sociales.

Much less recognized than the spread of democratic ideals was the period's growing traffic of goods, capital, and people across imperial borders and reforming states' attempts to control this mobility. Analyzing the American, French, and Haitian revolutions in an interconnected narrative, Manuel Covo centers imperial trade as a driving force, arguing that commercial factors preceded and conditioned political change across the revolutionary Atlantic. At the heart of these transformations was the entrepôt, the island known as the Pearl of the Caribbean, whose economy grew dramatically as a direct consequence of the American Revolution and the French-American alliance. Saint-Domingue was the single most profitable colony in the Americas in the second half of the eighteenth century, with its staggering production of sugar and coffee and the unpaid labor of enslaved people. The colony was so focused on its lucrative exports that it needed to import food and timber from North America, which generated enormous debate in France about the nature of its sovereignty over Saint-Domingue. At the same time, the newly independent United States had to come to terms with contradictory interests between the imperial ambitions of European powers, its connections with the Caribbean, and its own domestic debates over the future of slavery. This work sheds light on the three-way struggle among France, the United States, and Haiti to assert, define, and maintain commercial sovereignty. Drawing on a wealth of archives in France, the United States, and the United Kingdom, Entrepôt of Revolutions offers an innovative perspective on the primacy of economic factors in this era, as politicians and theorists, planters and merchants, ship captains, smugglers, and the formerly enslaved all attempted to transform capitalism in the Atlantic world.

Beginning in a small village but eventually overrunning most of northern France, the Jacquerie rebels destroyed noble castles and killed dozens of noblemen before being put down in a bloody wave of suppression. The revolt occurred in the wake of the Black Death and during the Hundred Years War, and it was closely connected to a rebellion in Paris against the French crown. The Jacquerie of 1358 resolves long-standing controversies about whether the revolt was just an irrational explosion of peasant hatred or simply an extension of the Parisian revolt. It shows that these opposing conclusions are based on the illusory assumption that the revolt was a united movement with a single goal. In fact, the Jacquerie has to be understood as a constellation of many events that evolved over time. It involved thousands of people, who understood what they were doing in different and changing ways. The story of the Jacquerie is about how individuals and communities navigated their specific political, social, and military dilemmas, how they reacted to events as they unfolded, and how they chose to remember (or to forget) in its aftermath. The Jacquerie of 1358 rewrites the narrative of this tumultuous period and gives special attention to how violence and social relationships were harnessed to mobilize popular rebellion.

For more than three centuries, between the middle of the 14th century up until circa 1670, the prevalence of the plague in France was said to be endemic, before it then vanished from French territory. The Great Plague of Marseille (1720-1722, which also impacted the rest of Provence, the County of Venaissin and Languedoc) proved to be an exception. During that period, the fight against the plague was deemed a top-priority along the French coast, and health institutions, called bureaux de la santé, were developed. Contributions to this book primarily focus on health vigilance from the standpoint of how to prevent an epidemic and how to respond to a declared epidemic. Among the salient themes addressed are: communications between health and different state actors, prevailing religious and political norms, and the popular participation in the fight against the plague. The use of the concept of vigilance enables the mobilisation of often rather distant branches of history, namely institutional. social, religious history, the history of communication and the history of public health.
