Book Long Term Solutions for a Short Term World

Download or read book Long Term Solutions for a Short Term World written by Ronald N. Harpelle and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-Term Solutions for a Short-Term World demonstrates the complexity of the challenges that poor countries face and introduces the readers to the concept and impact of participatory research for development. Participatory research requires researchers to work with communities, governments, and other relevant actors to deal with common problems. Finding solutions requires participants to reflect critically on the cultural, economic, historical, political, and social contexts within which the issue under investigation exists. The book contains a collection of essays from development researchers and professionals, each of whom is an activist who has made significant contributions to the struggles of the poor in their own societies. Essays are presented as case studies and, in each, the contributor explains the specific development problem, the paths followed to solve the problem, lessons learned as a result of the research, and the development challenges on the horizon in his field of research. Together, these essays present a fascinating picture of how some of today’s most pressing development issues are being dealt with through research, demonstrating how interdisciplinary and alternative approaches can be implemented in new and innovative ways.

  • Author : Benjamin Roseth
  • Publisher : Inter-American Development Bank
  • Release : 2018-06-06
  • ISBN : 159782335X
  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book Wait No More written by Benjamin Roseth and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the smallest unit of public policy: the government transaction. Government transactions—requesting a birth certificate, registering a property, or opening a business, for example—are the way that citizens and companies connect with the government. Efficient transactions enhance the business climate, citizen perception of government, and access to crucial public programs and services. In Latin America and the Caribbean, however, government transactions are often headaches. Public institutions rarely coordinate with each other, still rely on paper, and are more concerned about fulfilling bureaucratic requirements than meeting citizens’ needs. Wait No More empirically confirms a reality known anecdotally but previously unquantified and offers a path to escape the bureaucratic maze.

Book International Handbook of Research on Environmental Education

Download or read book International Handbook of Research on Environmental Education written by Robert B. Stevenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environment and contested notions of sustainability are increasingly topics of public interest, political debate, and legislation across the world. Environmental education journals now publish research from a wide variety of methodological traditions that show linkages between the environment, health, development, and education. The growth in scholarship makes this an opportune time to review and synthesize the knowledge base of the environmental education (EE) field. The purpose of this 51-chapter handbook is not only to illuminate the most important concepts, findings and theories that have been developed by EE research, but also to critically examine the historical progression of the field, its current debates and controversies, what is still missing from the EE research agenda, and where that agenda might be headed. Published for the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Book Preventing Health and Environmental Risks in Latin America

Download or read book Preventing Health and Environmental Risks in Latin America written by Ma. Luisa Marván and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses environmental and medical issues that could risk our well-being, our health, or even cause death. Some of the issues analysed could have negative consequences not only today but also for future generations if not prevented in time. With regard to health risks, the authors discuss several diseases that could be avoided if people perform (or avoid) certain behaviours and become accustomed to having healthier habits. Concerning environmental hazards, the authors discuss which social groups should be taken into account based on preventive strategies used to avoid a particular disaster. Both sections of the book on health and environmental issues have a subsection with chapters about risks and society. No matter the risk-related discipline the reader is familiar with, when he ends reading the book, it will become clear that risk analysis is the basis for prevention, and that it cannot be addressed from a single discipline nor with a single methodology.

  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book The Night is Young written by Héctor Carrillo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Night Is Young takes us past the stereotypes of macho hombres and dark-eyed señoritas to reveal the complex nature of sexuality in modern-day Mexico. Drawing on field research conducted in Guadalajara, Mexico's second-largest city, Héctor Carrillo shows how modernization, globalization, and other social changes have affected a wide range of hetero- and homosexual practices and identities. Carrillo finds that young Mexicans today grapple in a variety of ways with two competing tendencies. On the one hand, many seek to challenge traditional ideas and values they find limiting. But they also want to maintain a sense of Mexico's cultural distinctiveness, especially in relation to the United States. For example, while Mexicans are well aware of the dangers of unprotected sex, they may also prize the surrender to sexual passion, even in casual sexual encounters—an attitude which stems from the strong values placed on collective life, spontaneity, and an openness toward intimacy. Because these expectations contrast sharply with messages about individuality, planning, and overt negotiation commonly promoted in global public health efforts, Carrillo argues that they demand a new approach to AIDS prevention education in Mexico. A Mexican native, Carrillo has written an exceptionally insightful and accessible study of the relations among sexuality, social change, and AIDS prevention in Mexico. Anyone concerned with the changing place of sexuality in a modern and increasingly globalized world will profit greatly from The Night Is Young.
