Book Connecticut and Rhode Island Covered Bridges

Download or read book Connecticut and Rhode Island Covered Bridges written by William S. Caswell, Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During their heyday in the mid- to late 1800s, more than 150 covered bridges dotted the landscape of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Since that time, floods, fires, and progress have claimed all but three of the historic structures. Covered bridges were heavily concentrated in the hills of northwestern Connecticut, spanning the Farmington, Housatonic, and Naugatuck Rivers. In Rhode Island, most were built by the railroads in Woonsocket, Providence, and other communities in the northern part of the state, though few pictures are known to exist. Connecticut was the birthplace of two of the nation's best known covered bridge designers: Ithiel Town and Theodore Burr. Half of the covered bridges currently standing in the United States are supported by trusses patented by Town or Burr.

Book Crossing the Connecticut

Download or read book Crossing the Connecticut written by George E. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crossing the Connecticut: An Account of the Various Public Crossing of the Connecticut River at Hartford Since the Earliest Times, Together With a Full Description of Hartford Bridge The cut of the new bridge and western approach shown in the colored frontispiece is a close approximation to the work as it will appear when completed. The tunnelling or covering of the railroad tracks for a short distance north and south of the west end of the bridge is a recent change in the plans, to protect the structure from the blighting effects of smoke from locomotives. The draw indicated in the picture has been left there to show the original design that was adopted, and to show also why the western anchor pier was placed where it is, when it should have been the third pier from the west end, to correspond with its companion - the third pier from the east end, as the first plans show. This double or "anchor" pier was transferred to the west end of the bridge in order to more solidly abut and support the east end of the draw; and when permission was finally obtained from the United States Government to build the bridge without a draw, the work had so far proceeded that this double pier could not be transferred back again to its originally designed location. Book excerpt: Hartford is an old New England river city separated from its eastern neighbors by the Connecticut River. With the opening of the Merritt Parkway in 1940 and construction of the Wilbur Cross Parkway inviting traffic from Boston and New York, the Connecticut legislature realized a new river bridge at Hartford would be a must for local and through traffic. This became a reality in 1942, when the Charter Oak Bridge was opened to traffic. By 1948, the system of roads and highways numbered Route 15 was completed, with Hartford as its focal point. The character of the three Connecticut parkways, the Berlin Turnpike, the Hartford Bypass, and the Charter Oak Bridge is described in Route 15: The Road to Hartford. Highway historian and retired highway engineer Larry Larned, author of Traveling the Merritt Parkway, has appeared in television and radio interviews speaking about Route 15 and the nation's early roads. Route 15: The Road to Hartford presents images from his forty years of collecting and documenting Connecticut roadside culture, architecture, and engineering. His detailed account of the road to Hartford includes personal recollections of traveling Route 15 as a youngster and studying the details along the way-the tollbooths, the bow-tied gas station attendants, the families on picnics at rest stops.

Book Historic Highway Bridges of Michigan

Download or read book Historic Highway Bridges of Michigan written by Charles K. Hyde and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michigan's historic highway bridges are rapidly being torn down and replaced as they deteriorate or become unable to support increased traffic volumes and loads. While the state has the responsibility of providing safe bridges, historian Charles K. Hyde maintains that the state must also preserve many of these remaining historic structures to insure that future generations will have them to view and appreciate. In Historic Highway Bridges of Michigan, Hyde identifies Michigan's historically significant highway bridges within the broader contexts of American bridge design and construction in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book summarizes the improvement of highway bridge design in the United States and compares Michigan's experiences with national trends. To aid the reader interested in visiting the historic highway bridges of Michigan, regional maps show the location of bridges included in the text.

Book New Hampshire Covered Bridges

Download or read book New Hampshire Covered Bridges written by Glenn A. Knoblock and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2002-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Hampshire once had nearly four hundred covered bridges, most of which unfortunately are no longer in existence. Some of them were railroad bridges and, although often viewed as charming relics of the past, all of these bridges were actually vital links in New Hampshire's transportation system. Covered bridges were used to cross most of New Hampshire's large rivers, including the Connecticut, Merrimack, Mascoma, Contoocook, Pemigewasset, and Ashuelot. New Hampshire Covered Bridges is a photographic study of the state's enclosed wooden spans that date from as far back as 1827. The book contains rare photographs of historic bridges that no longer exist, as well as pictures of many that still stand today. The images are accompanied by detailed information about the design and construction of covered bridges and the men who built them. Each bridge has its own life story. Some have defied floods and hurricanes and still stand; others have fallen victim to nature or arson or the demands of modern transportation.
