Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this magisterial history of intellectual life, Michael O'Brien analyzes the lives and works of antebellum Southern thinkers and reintegrates the South into the larger tradition of American and European intellectual history. O'Brien finds that the evolution of Southern intellectual life paralleled and modified developments across the Atlantic by moving from a late Enlightenment sensibility to Romanticism and, lastly, to an early form of realism. Volume 1 describes the social underpinnings of the Southern intellect by examining patterns of travel and migration; the formation of ideas on race, gender, ethnicity, locality, and class; and the structures of discourse, expressed in manuscripts and print culture. In Volume 2, O'Brien looks at the genres that became characteristic of Southern thought. Throughout, he pays careful attention to the many individuals who fashioned the Southern mind, including John C. Calhoun, Louisa McCord, James Henley Thornwell, and George Fitzhugh. Placing the South in the larger tradition of American and European intellectual history while recovering the contributions of numerous influential thinkers and writers, O'Brien's masterwork demonstrates the sophistication and complexity of Southern intellectual life before 1860.

Book Intellectual Life and the American South 1810 1860

Download or read book Intellectual Life and the American South 1810 1860 written by Michael O'Brien and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael O'Brien has masterfully abridged his award-winning two-volume intellectual history of the Old South, Conjectures of Order, depicting a culture that was simultaneously national, postcolonial, and imperial, influenced by European intellectual traditions, yet also deeply implicated in the making of the American mind. Here O'Brien succinctly and fluidly surveys the lives and works of many significant Southern intellectuals, including John C. Calhoun, Louisa McCord, James Henley Thornwell, and George Fitzhugh. Looking over the period, O'Brien identifies a movement from Enlightenment ideas of order to a Romanticism concerned with the ambivalences of personal and social identity, and finally, by the 1850s, to an early realist sensibility. He offers a new understanding of the South by describing a place neither monolithic nor out of touch, but conflicted, mobile, and ambitious to integrate modern intellectual developments into its tense and idiosyncratic social experience.

Book The Weil Conjectures

Download or read book The Weil Conjectures written by Karen Olsson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Editors' Pick and Paris Review Staff Pick "A wonderful book." --Patti Smith "I was riveted. Olsson is evocative on curiosity as an appetite of the mind, on the pleasure of glutting oneself on knowledge." --Parul Sehgal, The New York Times An eloquent blend of memoir and biography exploring the Weil siblings, math, and creative inspiration Karen Olsson’s stirring and unusual third book, The Weil Conjectures, tells the story of the brilliant Weil siblings—Simone, a philosopher, mystic, and social activist, and André, an influential mathematician—while also recalling the years Olsson spent studying math. As she delves into the lives of these two singular French thinkers, she grapples with their intellectual obsessions and rekindles one of her own. For Olsson, as a math major in college and a writer now, it’s the odd detours that lead to discovery, to moments of insight. Thus The Weil Conjectures—an elegant blend of biography and memoir and a meditation on the creative life. Personal, revealing, and approachable, The Weil Conjectures eloquently explores math as it relates to intellectual history, and shows how sometimes the most inexplicable pursuits turn out to be the most rewarding.

Book Frobenius Distributions Lang Trotter and Sato Tate Conjectures

Download or read book Frobenius Distributions Lang Trotter and Sato Tate Conjectures written by David Kohel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Winter School and Workshop on Frobenius Distributions on Curves, held from February 17–21, 2014 and February 24–28, 2014, at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques, Marseille, France. This volume gives a representative sample of current research and developments in the rapidly developing areas of Frobenius distributions. This is mostly driven by two famous conjectures: the Sato-Tate conjecture, which has been recently proved for elliptic curves by L. Clozel, M. Harris and R. Taylor, and the Lang-Trotter conjecture, which is still widely open. Investigations in this area are based on a fine mix of algebraic, analytic and computational techniques, and the papers contained in this volume give a balanced picture of these approaches.

Book excerpt: This work proposes the generalization of the binary (strong) Goldbach’s Conjecture, briefly called “the Vertical Binary Goldbach’s Conjecture”, which is essentially a meta-conjecture because it states an infinite number of conjectures stronger than Goldbach’s, which all apply on “iterative” primes with recursive prime indexes, with many potential theoretical and practical applications in mathematics and physics) and a very special self-similar property of the primes subset of positive integers.
