Book Food Culture in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Food Culture in Sub Saharan Africa written by Fran Osseo-Asare and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East African, notably, Ethiopian, cuisine is perhaps the most well-known in the States. This volume illuminates West, southern, and Central African cuisine as well to give students and other readers a solid understanding of how the diverse African peoples grow, cook, and eat food and how they celebrate special occasions and ceremonies with special foods. Readers will also learn about African history, religions, and ways of life plus how African and American foodways are related. For example, cooking techniques such as deep frying and ingredients such as peanuts, chili peppers, okra, watermelon, and even cola were introduced to the United States by sub-Sahara Africans who were brought as slaves. Africa is often presented as a monolith, but this volume treats each region in turn with representative groups and foodways presented in manageable fashion, with a truer picture able to emerge. It is noted that the boundaries of many countries are imposed, so that food culture is more fluid in a region. Commonalities are also presented in the basic format of a meal, with a starch with a sauce or stew and vegetables and perhaps some protein, typically cooked over a fire in a pot supported by three stones. Representative recipes, a timeline, glossary, and evocative photos complete the narrative.

Book Congo Masquerade

    Book Details:
  • Author : Theodore Trefon
  • Publisher : Zed Books Ltd.
  • Release : 2011-09-08
  • ISBN : 1848138393
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Congo Masquerade written by Theodore Trefon and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congo Masquerade is about mismanagement, hypocrisy and powerlessness in what has proved to be one of Africa's most troublesome and volatile states. In this scathing study of catastrophic aid inefficiency, Trefon argues that whilst others have examined war and plunder in the Great Lakes region, none have yet evaluated the imported 'template format' reform package pieced together to introduce democracy and improve the well-being of ordinary Congolese. It has, the book demonstrates, been for years an almost unmitigated failure due to the ingrained political culture of corruption amongst the Congolese elite, abetted by the complicity and incompetence of international partners. Startling and provocative, Congo Masquerade offers a critical examination of why aid is not helping the Congo.

Book Introduction to Congo

Download or read book Introduction to Congo written by Gilad James, PhD and published by Gilad James Mystery School. This book was released on with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Democratic Republic of Congo, commonly known as Congo, is a central African country that is rich in natural resources such as coal, cobalt, and copper. It is a country that has been ravaged by colonialism, civil wars, and resource exploitation. It is home to over 80 million people, and despite being one of the most resource-rich countries in the world, the majority of the population lives in poverty. Congo is the second-largest country in Africa, and it shares borders with nine other African countries. Its history is complex, and it has seen colonization by the Belgians, which lasted for over 75 years, and multiple civil wars that have resulted in the loss of millions of lives. Today, the country is still struggling with political instability, corruption, and a struggling economy. However, it has also seen some progress in recent years, with peaceful transitions of power and a growing economy. The challenges in Congo are numerous, but there is also hope that the country can overcome them and fulfill its potential.
