Book excerpt: Among the materials found in Nature’s many diverse living organisms or produced by human industry, those made from polymers are dominant. In Nature, they are not only dominant, but they are, as well, uniquely necessary to life. Conformations: Connecting the Chemical Structures and Material Behaviors of Polymers explores how the detailed chemical structures of polymers can be characterized, how their microstructural-dependent conformational preferences can be evaluated, and how these conformational preferences can be connected to the behaviors and properties of their materials. The authors examine the connections between the microstructures of polymers and the rich variety of physical properties they evidence. Detailed polymer architectures, including the molecular bonding and geometries of backbone and side-chain groups, monomer stereo- and regiosequences, comonomer sequences, and branching, are explicitly considered in the analysis of the conformational characteristics of polymers. This valuable reference provides practicing materials engineers as well as polymer and materials science students a means of understanding the differences in behaviors and properties of materials made from chemically distinct polymers. This knowledge can assist the reader design polymers with chemical structures that lead to their desired material behaviors and properties.

The text then elaborates on the observation of polymer chain conformation by NMR, including model compound conformations, averaging of vicinal couplings, conformer populations, and polymer chain conformation. The publication also takes a look at the conformations of N-disubstituted polypeptide chains. The manuscript is a valuable reference for readers interested in polymer conformation and configuration.

Book Conformational Analysis of Polymers

Download or read book Conformational Analysis of Polymers written by Richard H. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project dealt with applying conformational energy calculations to polymers. The early stages involved using energy parameters developed for small or ordinary sized hydrocarbon molecules to calculate the stable conformations and barriers to rotation in isolated hydrocarbon polymer molecules. Later stages involved similating localized molecular motions postulated to be the basis for relaxations or transitions that control mechanical properties of bulk plastics. Calculational methods were developed that permit in favorable circumstances the inclusion of the response of the surrounding chains to localized motions of a chain in the bulk phase. Finally, a new set of energy parameters (or force-field) was developed for phosphazenes so that the conformational energy method can be applied to polyphosphazenes. It should now be possible to study the properties of phosphazene polymers by this method. (Author).

Book Conjugated Polymers and Designed Interfaces

Download or read book Conjugated Polymers and Designed Interfaces written by Byungjin Koo and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conformations of conjugated polymers can be altered by nearby environments. The intrapolymer conformation and interpolymer assemblies have a crucial impact on a variety of properties such as absorption, energy migration, and fluorescence. In this dissertation, the conformational changes and their effects on photophysics in different environments will be discussed. In Chapter 1, the basic principles to understand this thesis will be reviewed, including the processes of absorption and emission, exciton migration, the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, and interfacial phenomena. In Chapter 2, the conformational control and alignment of conjugated polymers at the air-water interface and how this alignment of polymers can lead to new emissive aggregates will be presented. The emission has the characteristics of excimers with the improved fluorescence quantum yields. The transfer of the aligned aggregates to glass substrates is attempted and these excimer films undergo reorganization upon exposure to solvent vapors, which triggers the fluorescence color change from yellow to cyan, leading to fluorescence-based chemical sensors. In Chapter 3, exciton migration to low-energy emissive traps at amphiphilic interfaces will be discussed. This chapter will deliver the design of interfaces and how the exciton migration can occur at the air-water interface and the hydrocarbon-water interface in lyotropic liquid crystals. To expand this interfacial exciton migration to more generalizable interfaces, Chapter 4 will show the fabrication of oil-in-water emulsions and how exciton migration in oil-in-water emulsion can produce distinct fluorescences between solution and interfaces. Chapter 5 will discuss the structural variations of novel functional conjugated polymers and how substituents can change the conformation of the polymer backbones. Additionally, how this conformational change affects the electronic and optical properties of polymers will be examined.

Book Polymers in Solution

  • Author : W.C. Forsman

Download or read book Polymers in Solution written by W.C. Forsman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers in Solution was written for scientists and engineers who have serious research interests in newer methods for characterization of polymer solutions, but who are not seasoned experts in the theoretical and experimental aspects of polymer science. In particular, it is assumed that the reader is not familiar with the development of theoretical notions in conformational statistics and the dynamics of chainlike molecules; how these two seemingly diverse theoretical topics are related; and the role played by polymer-solvent interactions. Chapter 1 thus presents background material that introduces most of the essential concepts, including some of the mathematical apparatus most commonly used in these areas of theory. This introduction is followed by five chapters that are more closely related to particular experimental techniques. These chapters introduce further theoretical notions as needed. Three of the chapters present con siderable detail on the experimental methods, while two other chapters deal more with the interpretation of experimental results in terms of current theories. Although neutron scattering has become an almost standard technique for the study of conformational properties of macromolecules in the solid state, there has been less emphasis on its application for characterization of polymer molecules in solution. Chapter 4 covers this growing area of application.

Book Polymers Near Surfaces Conformation Properties And Relation To Critical Phenomena

Download or read book Polymers Near Surfaces Conformation Properties And Relation To Critical Phenomena written by Eisenriegler Erich and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-09-30 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an introduction to the conformation properties near surfaces of long flexible polymer chains in extreme dilution. These properties are of both practical and fundamental importance. While the behavior in this fluctuation-dominated situation is independent of most microscopic details, it shows a large variety that is characterized by the different qualitative conditions in the bulk (good or theta solvent, etc) and near the surface (desorbing or adsorbing, etc). The main focus of the book is on powerful, recent theoretical developments that have -despite the long history of the field — increased our understanding considerably during the last few years. The close relationship to surface critical phenomena is explained, making it possible to apply advanced methods of field theory. A self-contained introduction in these approaches, and their application to polymer physics, are given assuming only a basic knowledge of statistical mechanics. A detailed consideration of ideal (random walk-type) chains near surfaces serves as a first orientation. Much of the materials have not appeared previously in book form. This text is the first to give an introduction simultaneously to the renormalization group, short distance expansions and conformal invariance in critical systems with a surface. This book will be of interest to physicists and chemists active in the field of polymers and to theoretical physicists working in statistical mechanics, critical phenomena and field theory. Due to its introductory character it will also be useful to students who intend to specialize in one of these fields, and it could also be used as a textbook for a course at senior undergraduate or graduate level.

Book Developments in Polymer Characterisation

Download or read book Developments in Polymer Characterisation written by J. V. Dawkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The policy adopted in Volume 1 of this series of including a relatively small number of topics for detailed review has been continued here. The techniques selected have received considerable attention in recent years. F or this reason and because of the significance of the characterisation data, further coverage of 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and small angle neutron scattering is given in the first two chapters. In Chapter I a large part of the review describes the determination of monomer sequence distributions and configurational sequences in copolymers formed from more than one polymerisable monomer. The review on neutron scattering (Chapter 2) is directed towards the determination of the chain conformation in semi-crystaIIine polymers, which has provided important results for the interpretation of chain folding and morphology in crystaIIisable polymers. Laser Raman spectroscopy has also been used for morphological studies, and this application together with a description of the theoretical and experimental aspects of the technique is given in Chapter 3. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy because of its extreme sensitivity to surface characteristics has provided information on polymeric solids that could not be obtained by other techniques. The principles and practice of this ESCA technique, including its use for simple elemental analysis, structural elucidation and depth profiling, are described in Chapter 4. The final two chapters are mainly concerned with the chain conformation of polymers in dilute solution. Ultrasonic techniques (Chapter 5) show pmmise for observing the dynamics of conformational changes.
