Book Confessions and Memoirs of an Airline Pilot

Download or read book Confessions and Memoirs of an Airline Pilot written by Enrique Captain Enrique "Blyhe" Horta and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Enrique (Henry) Horta was born the third child of the Horta Family in Ventura California. He lived in various places such as, Los Angeles, San Diego, Mexico, Germany, Mauritius, New Zealand, Japan and Jordan. While spending some of his teen years in Mexico he learned about survival and the importance of appreciating and doing the best of what resources he had. When he returned to California he was a skinny kid with dreams and plans to be a Pilot, traveler and adventurer. His wild dreams of becoming an Astronaut and going to the moon where replaced by more realistic dreams such as wanting to become an Airline Pilot. When he turned 18 years old he parted from his parents and had to join the working rat race starting out as a bag-boy at a local Safeway store. His plans to finish College were halted by his traveling bug so he took a break from school, sold his motorcycle, and went back-packing to Europe with only $1,000 Dollars in his pocket, a Euro-Pass train Ticket for a month, and a return airplane ticket home. Unexpected fatherhood in Germany at a young age made him become more responsible and serious about his dreams. When he returned to California he was now a young family man while working as a carpenter in construction and attending evening University and Flight School on weekends. His positive thinking methods, scholarships, grants, and student loans paid off and he graduated with an Airway Science Degree in addition to all his Pilot ratings and Certificates. Thereafter, his life became more of an adventure and he travelled around the world working for various Airlines as a Contract Pilot.

Book excerpt: A hilarious romp around the world with an airline captain who's a 'very naughty boy'. In real life, Captain Terry 'Flash' Gordon is an airline captain for a well-known major airline. He's changed his name because otherwise, he might be 'invited' to find alternative employment. Flash's personality is a creation from a combination of all the dubious characters the author flew with in his career. Flash has the philosophy of work hard and play hard. "Life is not a rehearsal," says Flash. Like most pilots, he's a total professional in the air but quite human the rest of the time. He doesn't suffer fools gladly and isn't the slightest bit PC. And he's totally fed up with the 'Woke' and the noisy minorities. So feminists, snobs, vegans, vacuous morons, the gormless and anyone who doesn't like nudity should all read this book with their eyes closed to avoid being offended. Flash is drawn to the opposite sex, generally thanks to that demon alcohol and 'the curse'. But, even in this pursuit, he generally leaves his connections smiling or laughing at him as he scarpers off or sneaks out. These are mostly true stories about Flash's adventures with aviation and travel. On the adventure side, Flash has always said, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." But, in general, all the stories are based on fact and actual characters, but with the names changed and a bit of judicious exaggeration to add humour. This book is a collection of some of Flash's recent adventures.

Book A Pilot s Story

Download or read book A Pilot s Story written by Don Volz and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my story-the story of a pilot who flew airplanes for some thirty-seven years: ten years in the United States Air Force, primarily in jet fighters, and then twenty-seven years flying commercial jet airliners. I was inspired to write this story after reading the autobiography, a few years ago, of Gen. Chuck Yeager-he being the world-renowned test pilot, World War II fighter ace, and first man to break the sound barrier in the Bell X-1. My story is the story of an average pilot, an average guy who survived several close calls, had many interesting experiences along the way, and often wondered, "Am I still here because I was especially good or because I was especially lucky?" I think the answer is definitely a combination of the two, just as Yeager says or implies in his book. With him, it may have been a larger contribution of skill, but as he said, "The secret of my success is that I always managed to live to fly another day." I have to echo that comment. While flying around the country with American Airlines, during "hours of complete boredom" (as we say), we pilots often traded our "war stories" of our flying (and other) experiences. I often thought that I had many tales that were similar to some of Yeager's and that I should put my experiences down on paper, even if it would only be my family who might read it. So this, then, is my story, my life, primarily, as it revolved around my aviating experiences over some thirty-seven years, from the viewpoint of a pilot who has no particular claim to fame but who has survived "to fly another day." One of the best descriptions of a flying career says: "You start out with a big bag of luck and an empty bag of experience; you want to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck!" I guess I have done that.

Book A Pilot s Ups and Downs

Download or read book A Pilot s Ups and Downs written by Alasdair Sutherland and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every 1,000 people who applied to be airline pilots in BEA/BOAC back in the day, about four made it. The other 996, plus their wives, parents, and children, might wonder how their lives could have turned out, so here is the story of one of the four. Besides, the passengers who sit behind that locked door and trust us with their lives must wonder, “What goes on up there, and how does it affect their lives and families?” My education included the University Air Squadron, then learning to fly at the College sponsored by British Airways. There is a chapter of general information on aviation, then most of the book is an account of my experiences, whether dramatic, disappointing, exciting, or amusing, during my varied career in British Airways. Some incidents occur within the cockpit, others in social interaction outside, and a few come from pilot folklore. I also describe visits to sights around the world, an aspect that draws people to aviation as a career, and interests everyone. I have added one professional pilot’s opinion on aviation topics in the news, the mysterious Malaysian disappearance, and the Alpine tragedy, and finish with my lifelong interest in designing model aircraft.

Book Four Years Above the Earth

Download or read book Four Years Above the Earth written by Field Morey and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When his student and close friend Oliver Smithies accepted his Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, he singled Field out as someone who was important in his life, saying, "Field Morey, a distinguished flight instructor taught me to fly...but he taught me something more important than flying. He taught me that it is possible to overcome fear with knowledge." During his four years above the earth, throughout fifty-eight years of teaching more than one thousand pilots, Field overcame fear, faced weather, set records, had abundant fun...and as he puts it, "learned from my students...probably more than I taught." Since he grew up in an aviation family, it was expected that Field would fly. A contemporary of Charles Lindbergh, his father, Howard, taught him about airplanes, about operating an airport, about character and responsibility, while Lindbergh inspired him to imagine more and aim higher. Twice the FAA named Field Flight Instructor of the Year. Later, his name was added to the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Along with Oliver Smithies, the pair set a world record, and when the Aviation Hall of Fame inducted him, it was a career highlight. In this memoir, Field recounts his coming-of-age in aviation and relates stories of memorable flights and remarkable adventures. With an awareness that his story is also his students' story, he recognizes the privilege of having been born when he was and pays tribute to his father, Howard Morey, an exemplary aviation pioneer, by thanking him every day for guiding him in the right direction. Yes, this is a story about flying, but it is much more. It is a study of how excellence evolves, not always in a linear progression, but with passion and vision.

Book Sixty Years in the 20th Century

Download or read book Sixty Years in the 20th Century written by D. Allen Butcher and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the author steps off his aircraft for the last time as a professional airline pilot, he looks back to the events of his lifetime that brought him to this moment. From his birth in 1939, he weaves a unique perspective on life in America during the last sixty years of the twentieth century. He begins his story during the tumultuous days of World War II when his young life tends to change suddenly, based on the needs of the nation. In the aftermath, he grows up in a nation altered forever by new technology, leading to his family's retreat to the land and a period of primitive living. During the “Happy Days” of the 1950s, he recounts the successes and challenges that every teenager faces in his or her formative years. Uncertain about his career path, the author finds his “niche” in the Air Force ROTC program at the University of Tennessee and qualifies for the Undergraduate Pilot Training program, where he gives an instructive and informative insight into the fundamentals and high standards of military flight training. He follows with his tours of duty as an air force transport pilot, culminating in his sometimes heart pounding wartime experiences in Vietnam. Answering the call of the nation's airlines for pilots, the author abandons his air force career path and begins his slow climb up the seniority list of a major airline. From his flight logbooks, he focuses on the events of each year and how they parallel the country's social and political changes. Finally, he ends with an emotion-filled account of his last flight and the satisfaction of having completed a career that exemplifies the professionalism found throughout our nation's airline pilot group.

Book PILOT HERE OR PILE IT THERE

Download or read book PILOT HERE OR PILE IT THERE written by Lt. Col. William E. Hubert, USAF (Ret.) and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-12-25 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pilot Here or Pile It There is an autobiography relating many of Bill’s experiences during 45 years of a widely diversified career as pilot. It also includes a few unusual events or circumstances that Bill encountered as a direct result of being a pilot. He attained his civilian instructor and instrument ratings in mid 1946, which early on qualified him to engage in almost unlimited piloting endeavors. Considering that his activities as a pilot included; a military career, manager of a civilian flight school and charter service, a non-scheduled air-freight pilot and Civil Air Patrol pilot, some interesting situations were bound to occur. I neglected to mention he was chief pilot in a failed attempt to start a scheduled air shuttle service. Bill’s one ambition that he never achieved was to be in a combat situation. He received his Army Air Corps pilot wings and commission in June 1944, during WWII at the age of nineteen. He had two breaks in military service from which he was recalled in August of 1950 for the Korean conflict and again in 1958 prior to Viet Nam. Bill’s three tours of active duty certainly provided ample opportunities for the Air Force to fulfill his one missing challenge.

Book A Good Stick

Download or read book A Good Stick written by Jerry Sorlucco and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the training of U.S. W W II glider pilots, mainly in the U. S., but also includes some training that took place in several foreign countries. Excitement, daring adventures, and horror were not exclusive experiences of WW II pilots flying combat missions in bombers, fighters, and gliders. Rest assured, the training of glider pilots was replete with stories of nearly equivalent adventures and misadventures. Some of those were comical, but often they were frightening, frustrating, painful, and/or perplexing. Sadly, some were deadly This book is a synthesis of diverse information, and based on over 190 sources. One hundred fifty-four of those are either oral or written histories from the men and sometimes the women involved. A large number of these are unique and previously unrecorded. Most of the information has been collected by the author between 1981 and 2004. Almost immediately it became a labor of love and I became, in spirit, a "family" member with these fine men and women.
