Book Augustine Confessions Books V IX

Download or read book Augustine Confessions Books V IX written by Augustine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books V-IX of the Confessions trace five crucial years in the life of Augustine, from his debut as a teacher of rhetoric in North Africa to his baptism as a Christian and the renunciation of a worldly career in Milan. This commentary will be invaluable for those wishing to read his story in the original Latin. Through careful glosses and notes, Augustine's Latin is made accessible to students of patristics and of classics. His extensive quotations from Scripture are translated and explained in light of the variant Bible texts and the interpretative assumptions through which he came to understand them. The unfolding of his career is set against the background of political, cultural, and religious change in the fourth century, and the art with which he created a form of narrative without precedent in earlier Latin literature is illustrated in close detail.

Book Criticism and Confession

  • Author : Nicholas Hardy
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-06-23

Download or read book Criticism and Confession written by Nicholas Hardy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period between the late Renaissance and the early Enlightenment has long been regarded as the zenith of the 'republic of letters', a pan-European community of like-minded scholars and intellectuals who fostered critical approaches to the study of the Bible and other ancient texts, while renouncing the brutal religio-political disputes that were tearing their continent apart at the same time. Criticism and Confession offers an unprecedentedly comprehensive challenge to this account. Throughout this period, all forms of biblical scholarship were intended to contribute to theological debates, rather than defusing or transcending them, and meaningful collaboration between scholars of different confessions was an exception, rather than the norm. 'Neutrality' was a fiction that obscured the ways in which scholarship served the interests of ecclesiastical and political institutions. Scholarly practices varied from one confessional context to another, and the progress of 'criticism' was never straightforward. The study demonstrates this by placing scholarly works in dialogue with works of dogmatic theology, and comparing examples from multiple confessional and national contexts. It offers major revisionist treatments of canonical figures in the history of scholarship, such as Joseph Scaliger, Isaac Casaubon, John Selden, Hugo Grotius, and Louis Cappel, based on unstudied archival as well as printed sources; and it places those figures alongside their more marginal, overlooked counterparts. It also contextualizes scholarly correspondence and other forms of intellectual exchange by considering them alongside the records of political and ecclesiastical bodies. Throughout, the study combines the methods of the history of scholarship with techniques drawn from other fields, including literary, political, and religious history. As well as presenting a new history of seventeenth-century biblical criticism, it also critiques modern scholarly assumptions about the relationships between erudition, humanistic culture, political activism, and religious identity.

This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confessions of St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo City of God, even in the New Jerusalem, there will be no longer confession of sin, but there will be confession Of praise.l It is not surprising, that with this view of confession he should hinge on the incidents of his life such considerations as tend to elevate the mind and heart of the reader. When, for example, he speaks of his youthful sins,2 he diverges into a disquisition on the motives to sin; when his friend dies,3 he moralizes on death; and - to give one example Of a re verse process - his profound psychological review of memory4 recalls his former sin (which at times haunts him in his dreams), and leads up to devout reflections on God's power to cleanse from sin. This undertone of penitence and praise which per vades the Confessions in all its episodes, like the golden threads which run through the texture of an Eastern garment, presents one Of its peculiar charms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confession of a Child of the Century To write the history of one's life, one must first have lived it and so it is not my own that I write. Having been af icted, while yet young, with an abominable moral malady, I relate what happened to me during three years. If I were the only one sick, I would say nothing about it but as there are many others besides myself, who suffer from the same dis ease, I write for them, while not too sure that they will pay any attention to it 3 for, in case no one should take warning therefrom, I shall still have derived this benefit from my words, that I shall have cured myself more effectually, and, like the fox caught in the trap, I shall have gnawed my captive paw.
