Download or read book Co Aytch Maury Grays First Tennessee Regiment written by Samuel R. Watkins and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DigiCat presents the Civil War Memories Series. This meticulous selection of the firsthand accounts, memoirs and diaries is specially comprised for Civil War enthusiasts and all people curious about the personal accounts and true life stories of the unknown soldiers, the well known commanders, politicians, nurses and civilians amidst the war. In 1881, with a "house full of young 'rebels' clustering about my elbows," Watkins began to chronicle his experiences in the First Tennessee Regiment. "Co. Aytch" is considered to be one of the greatest memoirs ever written by a soldier of the field. The charming prose captures the experience of the common private soldier, from the hardships of camp life to the horrors of battle, the camaraderie of a unit to the loss of a brother, the pride in one's state to the devastation of defeat.

Book The Confederate Army A Regiment An Analysis Of The Forty Eighth Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment 1861 1865

Download or read book The Confederate Army A Regiment An Analysis Of The Forty Eighth Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment 1861 1865 written by Major Kincaid Gerald and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of an army is often evaluated by its achievements as a whole, or by that of its commanders or perhaps even its divisions. Often lost in the equation is the small unit. After the great plans are complete and the logistics preparations are accomplished, it is the collective performance of the small unit that ultimately decides the battle. This thesis analyses the campaigns, soldiers, organization, equipment, and performance of just one regiment: the 48th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. Material concerning the 48th includes numerous primary sources: the Official Records, Confederate Veteran, The Southern Historical Papers, Southern Bivouac, local histories, and the CARL microfiche library of unit histories (Note: the 48th is not included in these unit histories). Other primary references include war diaries of two officers, three enlisted men, and copies of the 48th's Quartermaster records. This thesis concludes that, while training and equipment of the 48th was sometimes poor, it was effective in numerous engagements, despite its relative small size. The ultimate demise of the unit was due to personnel losses.

Book Co Aytch Maury Grays First Tennessee Regiment Or A Side Show Of The Big Show Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Co Aytch Maury Grays First Tennessee Regiment Or A Side Show Of The Big Show Illustrated Edition written by Sam R. Watkins and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. “A classic account of Civil War combat. This is a justifiably famous account of the Civil War told by an ordinary soldier from within the ranks of a Tennessee regiment within the Confederate Army. Often quoted, it tells in a direct way, the story of an infantry company at war. In this it has much in common with similar accounts of men living and fighting together in combat irrespective of nationality, age or conflict. This is an intimate portrait of war with all its comradeship, hardship, fear, horror and humour. We accompany Watkins and his comrades of Company ‘Aytch’ on campaign as he recollects, in his easy and personable style, encounters at Shiloh, Corinth, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and other bloody battlefields where they fought and died for the Confederate cause until the eventual surrender of the Southern forces. Highly recommended.”-Print ed.

Book excerpt: Company Aytch; Or, a Side Show of the Big Show is the personal memoir of American Civil War veteran Samuel "Sam" Rush Watkins. Often heralded as one of the most reliable and informative primary sources on the Civil War, Watkins describes his experiences during his service as an infantryman in the Confederate Army. In the early days of the war, Watkins enlisted in the Tennessee Infantry and served through the duration of the conflict, participating in many battles, including ones in Atlanta, Jonesboro, and Nashville. Profoundly, Watkins was one of only sixty-five men from the First Tennessee infantry, which recruited over three thousand men, to survive the war. Widely studied by Civil War historians, Company Aytch is valued for its portrayal of the experience of the common soldier.
