It also attempted to identify the factors which affected the low income households for affording the condominium house and as well as to assess whether the condominium housing project benefits this targeted groups. Among other condominium sites Gelan site was chosen purposively. The study used mixing qualitative and quantitative methods and used primary and secondary data sources. However, the households with low income could not afford the price of condominium house. Furthermore, in the study area, condominium housing beneficiaries were not those who were classified as low and middle income categories rather households with higher income categories were benefited more. Majority of the housing units are owned by non targeted groups. The study also showed that, the intended objectives of condominium housing programs to provide 30 percent of the housing unit for female headed households has been well applied in to the study area. Additionally, the study revealed that, external factors such as poor investigation of the real problems on the ground, weak institutional evaluation and monitoring system of the program, the unparticipatory of the program and corruption practices was the main challenging factors that affects the households to benefited from the program. Based on the finding the researcher suggests the following to minimize the current problems of housing in the city through, giving special attention to control rural to urban migration, facilitating a comprehensive national housing policy by providing different subsidy mechanisms, establishing governmental housing banks that particularly work on the provision of low cost houses, encouraging the saving culture of the society, expanding the construction of rented houses, legislating and enforcing laws on the price of condo houses and increasing the participation of the city’s residents on evaluation of the program.

Book Public Rental Housing as Housing Delivery Strategy in Addis Ababa

Download or read book Public Rental Housing as Housing Delivery Strategy in Addis Ababa written by Yehanew Hailu and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, , language: English, abstract: Rental housing takes the biggest share in Addis Ababa’s housing stock; above 50 percent. 37% is the share of the private rental sector; which is characterised by continuous rise in rent price and is becoming unaffordable for many poor households. Contrary to this is the public rental housing sector (PRH); it provides the most affordable housing units so far. With unrevised rent price and contract the sector has become permanent affordable shelter for many. Government policy that promotes home ownership has frozen the production of new PRH units. The study examines existing PRH stock in Addis Ababa in search of potentials and lessons for further developing the sector in the future. It focuses on apartments constructed by Agency for Government Houses (AGH); and studies development process, target group and management. Based on findings the study also proposes a strategy for developing the sector anew.

This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assess opportunities and challenges of condominium housing in Hawassa City, south Ethiopia, with the consideration of the pre-and post-transfer issues. The majority of residents in condominium houses indicated that their current housing situation is better than their previous houses. The study also indicated that condominium houses are better suit for households with fewer family members. The designs for external appearance and aspect of the condominium buildings, and the internal partition and arrangement of the rooms have hardly satisfied the residents. Common land and common facility usage, noise pollution, waste and sewage disposal, house-maid and children related issues are some of the major causes for inconvenient neighborhood relationships. The criteria set to transfer the condominium houses to the beneficiaries was observed less practical. Discrepancy has been observed between the criteria set for handing-over the condominium houses to the beneficiaries and the actual handing-over process. The study also concluded that the poorest segment of the community was not in a position to own condominium houses because of affordability problems.

Book Lessons of Informality

Download or read book Lessons of Informality written by Felix Heisel and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal settlements made up of corrugated iron shacks and other materials are a ubiquitous feature in the megacities of Africa, Asia and Latin America. In response to the enormous influx of migrants from the countryside, the informal city experienced a phenomenal growth. While rightly criticized for their lack of hygiene and for their low-level living conditions, these shelters nevertheless provide planning strategies and possibly even a roadmap to a resilient city in an emerging territory. The unregistered economic activities associated with them proliferate in a similar way and basic urban services are increasingly provided informally. Examples of these economic phenomena are microloans, bottom-up insurance or professions such as the "Kuré-Yalew" (refuse collector), who acts as an "urban miner" and thus contributes a valuable service to the community by recycling materials.

Book The Transformation of Addis Ababa

Download or read book The Transformation of Addis Ababa written by Elias Yitbarek Alemayehu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere in Africa is urban development occurring as rapidly as in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa, at the present moment. During the last decade and a half, massive construction projects in housing, commercial buildings and infrastructure have transformed the landscape of the city, creating a social experiment that has never been replicated on such a massive scale in Africa. This volume, written by Ethiopian and Finnish experts in urban planning, architecture, geography, and ethnology, documents for the first time Addis Ababa’s process of radical transformation. It asks how the city’s poorest residents are affected by the current urban renewal, and identifies the most important challenges facing the city’s residents as a result. Its conclusions focus on three issues: the livelihoods of low-income residents, their participation in the development of the city, and their social networks of support. This volume also traces out the organic forms of the city’s development. Unlike cities in many other African countries, Addis Ababa emerged with only the thinnest traces of a brief colonial legacy: only five years under Italian occupation in the mid-20th century. The city’s development has eluded many planners and has produced unique indigenous forms of urban living. The book records the current spatial relationships and older architectural forms in the old inner city currently slated for demolition. Numerous maps and illustrations are included to help readers visualize the topics discussed in the volume. The volume will be of interest to anyone interested in Addis Ababa’s history and character, as well as policymakers, urban planners, architects, human geographers, ethnographers and researchers of urban poverty and urban informality.

Book excerpt: Studies about the economics of public condominium housing projects have traditionally focused on its affordability, financing, property rights, land use pattern, and housing class issues. Even then, the available empirical evidence is largely drawn based on the experience of Europe and the US. This article takes a new insight of the linkage between public housing projects and economic development by examining the multifaceted economic opportunities created by the Integrated Housing Development Program in Addis Ababa. The study depends on Addis Ababa Housing Construction Project Office 2004-2018 data, a survey of 1210 households and in-depth interview held with 23 informants in 13 selected housing projects. The result reveals that the construction of mega public housing projects contributed to the reduction of unemployment by creating a huge direct job opportunities. Likewise, the finding explores people make economic benefit out of their chance of homeownership in a number of ways: income through apartment rent, income saving due to relief from private rental accommodation, income through apartment sale and fixed asset building. Yet, the physical, demographic, and socio-economic dynamics accompanied by the condominium form of living arrangement create means of earning by way of market and employment opportunities for various groups of people. In conclusion, focusing on economic dimension previous studies largely unnoticed, the findings in this article would spark a different outlook of the economics of large-scale public condominium housing program.
