Book Condition Growth and Projected Yield of Lodgepole Pine and Interior Spruce 20 Years After Rehabilitation of an Understocked Site in North central British Columbia

Download or read book Condition Growth and Projected Yield of Lodgepole Pine and Interior Spruce 20 Years After Rehabilitation of an Understocked Site in North central British Columbia written by Roger J. Whitehead and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stony Lake trial was established in 1987 to benchmark growth performance of interior spruce and lodgepole pine planted into 12 treatment regimes for rehabilitating an understocked sub-boreal spruce site. All combinations of three options for primary site clearing treatments (burn, spray and burn, or windrow), two options for secondary site preparation treatments (disc-trenching or no disc-trenching), and two options for tertiary weeding treatments (broadcast application of herbicide three years after planting or no treatment) were tested. The objectives of this report were to 1) document the status of interior spruce and lodgepole pine trees planted into the 12 treatment regimes at the Stony Lake long-term research trial and 2) use these early growth data to customize Tree and Stand Simulator (TASS) runs to project potential impact on yield and expected value at rotation.--Includes text from document.

Book The Role of Insectivorous Birds in Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book The Role of Insectivorous Birds in Forest Ecosystems written by James G. Dickson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Role of Insectivorous Birds in Forest Ecosystems is a publication of the proceedings of The Role of Insectivorous Birds in Forest Ecosystems symposium, held on July 13 and 14, 1978 at Nacogdoches, Texas. The proceedings discuss the ecology of insectivorous birds and acknowledge their roles in forest ecosystems. The book begins with an introduction to and history of insectivorous birds and their roles in forest ecosystems. It then discusses the sampling methods for bird and insect populations, bird foraging strategies, and ecology of insectivorous bird species and communities. This book will be helpful to forest managers in managing insectivorous birds. It is also especially valuable in formulating biological control strategies for use in forests.

Book The Mountain Pine Beetle

Download or read book The Mountain Pine Beetle written by Pacific Forestry Centre and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a synthesis of published information on mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins [Coleoptera: Scolytidae]) biology and management with an emphasis on lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) forests of western Canada. Intended as a reference for researchers as well as forest managers, the book covers three main subject areas: mountain pine beetle biology, management, and socioeconomic concerns. The chapters on biology cover taxonomy, life history and habits, distribution, insect-host tree interactions, development and survival, epidemiology, and outbreak history. The management section covers management strategy, survey and detection, proactive and preventive management, and decision support tools. The chapters on socioeconomic aspects include an economic examination of management programs and the utilization of post-beetle salvage timber in solid wood, panelboard, pulp and paper products."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This publication is the result of a course on identification of Hymenoptera given three times since 1985 at the Centre for Land and Biological Resources Research. The considerable interest in these courses indicated the need for a comprehensive identification guide to all extant families of Hymenoptera. The main emphasis is on family identification using the keys, which are complemented by family sketches. The sketches include a taxonomic diagnosis to supplement the keys, a summary of the biology, the size and distribution, and important literature references.
