Book Double Concerto for Violin Percussion and Orchestra

Download or read book Double Concerto for Violin Percussion and Orchestra written by Katarina Curcin and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Concerto is a genuine Double Concerto, since the two soloists often play together, exchanging their musical ideas and characters. However, there are two separate cadenzas for each soloist, the percussion solo cadenza in the first and the violin solo cadenza in the third movement. There is a double cadenza in the first movement as well. Double Concerto for Violin, Percussion and Orchestra consists of three movements: Allegro con brio, Largo and Vivo, and it has a duration of eighteen minutes. The solo percussion plays on two different groups of instruments: idiophones (Marimba and Vibraphone) and membranophones (Bass Drum, four Tom-Toms and two Bongos set). With this instrumentation, the percussion solo gets to play virtuosic rhythmic passages but also lyrical and simple melodic lines. The first movement opens with the energetic solo percussion and orchestra introducing the pitch set: A-Bb-Eb-E. This pitch set leads to a different section that brings in a pitch set: C-C♯-F♯-G. Those two groups form together an octatonic scale. The third pitch set introduces remaining pitches of the chromatic scale: B-D-F-Ab, which form a diminished seventh chord. This set is introduced by the soloists competing with the entire orchestra still playing the first two sets. All three sets together create the climactic moment of the first movement. The slow movement is in ABA' ternary form. This dreamy movement also contains two contrasting pitch sets, which combined together complete the chromatic scale. The pitch sets are Db-Eb-Gb-Ab-Bb and A-B-C-D-E-F-G. The third movement brings back the rushing excitement from the first movement. This energetic movement, with its continuous eighth-note pulsation, brings the entire orchestra to a big culmination with a twelve-tone cluster in the orchestra. That overwhelming sound along with the virtuosic solo parts, bring the entire piece to the final tutti on A, the same pitch that opens the Concerto. In the fast movements the style is rhythmically vital and colorful with the slow movement being rather lyrical and emotional. The outer movements have related harmonic, rhythmic and pitch materials. The use of different pitch sets defines the overall structure and form of the Concerto.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The composer writes: I The Furies - The Furies were avenging spirits of retributive justice whose task was to punish crimes outside the reach of human justice. Their names were Alecto, Megæra and Tisiphone. This movement contains an adapted transcription of a fragment of improvised playing by one of my favourite Greek violinists, Stathis Koukoularis (It appears as a solo for violin about 2 minutes into the movement). II To Yelasto Paithi (The Smiling Child) - This is the closest I've come to expressing - in a way not possible with the spoken or written word - the feelings inspired by my precious children, Emanuel and Zoe. In this movement is also caught the summer I spent working on the concerto at my parents' house just outside the village of Nea Michaniona - a house perched on a cliff which looks down on the Aegean and up to Mount Olympus. III Dance of the Mænads - Draped in the skins of fawns, crowned with wreaths of ivy and carrying the thyrsos - a staff wound round with ivy leaves and topped with a pine cone - the Mænads roamed the mountains and woods, seeking to assimilate the potency of the beasts that dwelled there and celebrating their god Dionysos with song, music and dance. The human spirit demands Dionysiac ecstasy; to those who accept it, the experience offers spiritual power. For those who repress the natural force within themselves, or refuse it to others, it is transformed into destruction, both of the innocent and the guilty. When possessed by Dionysos, the Mænads became savage and brutal. They plunged into a frenzied dance, obtaining an intoxicating high and a mystical ecstasy that gave them unknown powers, making them the match of the bravest hero.' View from Olympus was the recipient of the SOUNZ (Centre for New Zealand Music) Contemporary Award at the 2002 APRA Silver Scroll Awards.

Book excerpt: A History of the Concerto may be read from cover to cover, but readers may also use the extensive index to focus on specific concertos and their composers. Numerous musical examples illuminate critical points. While some readers may want to study the more detailed analyses with scores in hand, this is not essential for an understanding of the text.
