  • Pages : 523 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Steinberg's 1996 volume The Symphony: A Reader's Guide received glowing reviews across America. It was hailed as "wonderfully clear...recommended warmly to music lovers on all levels" (Washington Post), "informed and thoughtful" (Chicago Tribune), and "composed by a master stylist" (San Francisco Chronicle). Seiji Ozawa wrote that "his beautiful and effortless prose speaks from the heart." Michael Tilson Thomas called The Symphony "an essential book for any concertgoer." Now comes the companion volume--The Concerto: A Listener's Guide. In this marvelous book, Steinberg discusses over 120 works, ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach in the 1720s to John Adams in 1994. Readers will find here the heart of the standard repertory, among them Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, eighteen of Mozart's piano concertos, all the concertos of Beethoven and Brahms, and major works by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, Bruch, Dvora'k, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Elgar, Sibelius, Strauss, and Rachmaninoff. The book also provides luminous introductions to the achievement of twentieth-century masters such as Arnold Schoenberg, Be'la Barto'k, Igor Stravinsky, Alban Berg, Paul Hindemith, Sergei Prokofiev, Aaron Copland, and Elliott Carter. Steinberg examines the work of these musical giants with unflagging enthusiasm and bright style. He is a master of capturing the expressive, dramatic, and emotional values of the music and of conveying the historical and personal context in which these wondrous works were composed. His writing blends impeccable scholarship, deeply felt love of music, and entertaining whimsy. Here then is a superb journey through one of music's richest and most diverse forms, with Michael Steinberg along as host, guide, and the best of companions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains six complete piano concertos in full score: No. 17 in G Major, K.453; No. 18 in B-flat Major, K.456; No. 19 in F Major, K.459; No. 20 in D Minor, K.466; No. 21 in C Major, K. 467; No. 22 in E-flat Major, K. 482. Since Mozart's piano concertos are frequently performed in concert and there are several recordings currently available for each of these pieces, this edition is extremely useful for study, reference, and enjoyment."

Book Elements of Sonata Theory

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Hepokoski
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2011-02-11
  • ISBN : 0199890234
  • Pages : 692 pages

Download or read book Elements of Sonata Theory written by James Hepokoski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Sonata Theory is a comprehensive, richly detailed rethinking of the basic principles of sonata form in the decades around 1800. This foundational study draws upon the joint strengths of current music history and music theory to outline a new, up-to-date paradigm for understanding the compositional choices found in the instrumental works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and their contemporaries: sonatas, chamber music, symphonies, overtures, and concertos. In so doing, it also lays out the indispensable groundwork for anyone wishing to confront the later adaptations and deformations of these basic structures in the nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries. Combining insightful music analysis, contemporary genre theory, and provocative hermeneutic turns, the book brims over with original ideas, bold and fresh ways of awakening the potential meanings within a familiar musical repertory. Sonata Theory grasps individual compositions-and each of the individual moments within them-as creative dialogues with an implicit conceptual background of flexible, ever-changing historical norms and patterns. These norms may be recreated as constellations "compositional defaults," any of which, however, may be stretched, strained, or overridden altogether for individualized structural or expressive purposes. This book maps out the terrain of that conceptual background, against which what actually happens-or does not happen-in any given piece may be assessed and measured. The Elements guides the reader through the standard (and less-than-standard) formatting possibilities within each compositional space in sonata form, while also emphasizing the fundamental role played by processes of large-scale circularity, or "rotation," in the crucially important ordering of musical modules over an entire movement. The book also illuminates new ways of understanding codas and introductions, of confronting the generating processes of minor-mode sonatas, and of grasping the arcs of multimovement cycles as wholes. Its final chapters provide individual studies of alternative sonata types, including "binary" sonata structures, sonata-rondos, and the "first-movement form" of Mozart's concertos.

Book Recital and Concerto Works for Piano by Johann Sebastian Bach Ludwig Van Beethoven Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Fr d ric Chopin Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff

Download or read book Recital and Concerto Works for Piano by Johann Sebastian Bach Ludwig Van Beethoven Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Fr d ric Chopin Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff written by Yuyan Liu (Graduate student) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, I analyze and discuss the seven works that I performed on my solo and concerto recitals. The French Suites, BWV 812-817, are six suites that Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the keyboard between 1722 and 1725. French Suite No. 2 in C Minor, BWV 813 includes six dances: Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Air, Menuet, and Gigue. The piano sonata, "Les Adieux," Op. 81a in E-flat Major was composed between 1809 and 1810 by Beethoven for his benefactor, student, and friend Archduke Rudolf. This sonata is divided into three movements, and the movements are titled by the composer: " Das Lebewohl-Abwesenheit-Das Wiedersehn." Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G Major, Op. 32, No. 5 was written in 1910. This work is a masterpiece that it is pure, noble, exquisite, and concise, like a quiet and poetic watercolor painting. Rachmaninoff's Moment musicale No. 4 is an early piano work that he wrote in 1896. This piano work symbolizes Rachmaninoff's musical creation in the form of a character piece. Chopin's Polonaise in E-flat Minor, Op. 26, No. 2, composed in 1836, is one of Chopin's tragic works. It contains an undercurrent of explosive solid power that symbolizes the unconquerable spirit of the Polish nation. Tchaikovsky's Dumka, Op. 59 was composed in 1886. Subtitled "Russian Countryside Scenery," it combines Slavic music elements with elegiac features to create a piece of poignant beauty. The Piano Concerto No. 18 in B-flat Major, K. 456 was written by Mozart in 1784. There are three movements, of which the second movement is a theme and variations, full of tranquil and dreamy colors.
