The inner freedom encountered to make this kind of decision was the result of a gradual self-confrontation. This author perceived the necessity to dispel the fear associated with questioning his habitual suppositions and to look beyond the limits of the indoctrination he had received. For a long time, while still religious, he named this fearlessness "a quest for wisdom" or "the spirituality of an unsettled heart". Nowadays, in light of the experiences had, he prefers to emphasize the courage to evolve, which requires, five years after the abjuration, the assumption of speaking publicly about the dissidence that was effected. When dissidents of ideologies or institutions start talking or writing about their experiences, it is necessary to observe the kind of motivation and intention implicit in the decision made. The former militant, the former integrant, the former partisan, the former something, in spite of the effort to affirm that they are no longer part of the institution to which they once belonged, may continue to define themselves based on the institution. In this case the person is still a "former" in relation to what they intend to deny. Perhaps, in their eagerness to critically speak out about the reasons underlying their abandonment of a certain idea or organization, they still flaunt the previous condition as a trophy, unfurling the pride of being a "former". The ambiguity in question lies in the fact that the person's point of reference continues to be in the no longer desired way of living or thinking.

This collection of essays explores the historical background and present ecclesial situation, explaining the dramatic shift in attitude on the part of contemporary Catholics in the U.S. and Europe. The overall purpose is neither to justify nor to repudiate the authority of the church's hierarchy, but to cast some light on: the context within which it operates, the complexities and ambiguities of the historical tradition of belief and behavior it speaks for, and the kinds of limits it confronts - consciously or otherwise. Looming over all of these teachings is the specter of the doctrine of infallibility. First defined in 1870 to cover only papal infallibility, it would be expanded in the 1960s to include the exercise of infallibility by the worldwide college of bishops. Keating discusses the most significant themes dealt with by popes during this period--the Bible, religious freedom, church-state relations, social doctrine, human sexuality, ecumenism, and interreligious dialogue. He describes how papal teaching has changed, developed, and even been contradicted by later popes, although they have failed to expressly acknowledge departures from prior teaching. He details how the doctrine of infallibility, far from serving to bolster the credibility of papal teaching, often has served to undermine it.

Yet even with growing support from the laity, and an increasing number of vocal priests and nuns, same-sex couples are still denied the opportunity to experience the sacrament of marriage. Drawing on testimony from same-sex married couples who have “a meaningful connection to the Catholic tradition,” this book makes a case for considering same-sex marriage as sacramental from a Catholic perspective. Further, it argues that Catholic families, church communities, and institutions would benefit from wider and deeper practices of gospel-inspired hospitality and sanctuary as it relates to queer persons and couples. At the book’s heart are stories from twenty-two couples, gathered from in-person interviews in Wisconsin, Chicagoland, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay area. The research builds on a previous project on Catholic marriage, conducted with a colleague, Julie Donovan Massey, which resulted in Project Holiness: Marriage as a Workshop for Everyday Saints (Liturgical Press, 2015; winner of a 2016 Catholic Press Association Award). While that project was limited to heterosexual couples, expanding the research to include same-sex couples was both timely and necessary. Currently, the Catholic magisterium asserts: “There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family” (Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, Considerations Regarding Proposals To Give Legal Recognition To Unions Between Homosexual Persons (No. 4). Reasserted in the 2015 Synod document (No. 76). and quoted by Pope Francis in Amoris Laetitia (No. 251). On the other hand, same sex marriage has been legalized in our country; same sex couples—including Catholic ones—are de facto marrying and parenting; a significant number of mainline Protestant churches support same-sex marriage; and some revisionist Catholic sexual ethicists support same-sex relationships. Clearly, at this moment in time, continued theological analysis of same-sex marriage is crucial. The voices and experiences of same-sex couples must inform that analysis. Gathered are stories that highlight how couples are sacraments to one another as well as to their families and communities, as their love overflows in lifegiving ways. Also included are powerful stories of rejection, inclusion, and belonging in families, church communities, and Catholic institutions, pointing to the power and necessity of gospel-inspired, radical hospitality and sanctuary. This book is an invitation to practice what Pope Francis calls “the art of listening,” necessary for genuine encounter and solidarity in a diverse body of Christ (The Joy of the Gospel No. 171).
