Book Comrades of Peril Classic Reprint

Download or read book Comrades of Peril Classic Reprint written by Randall Parrish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comrades of Peril Once he glanced about over the trail along which he had come, recalling to memory those desolate leagues of prairie, burned by the summer sun, undulating slightly, yet retaining all the aspects of a desert land. He could perceive the faint ribbon of a trail leading toward his lonely ranch on the Cottonwood, zigzagging away off there across the landscape almost to the hori zon. God! How tiresome, dirty and desolate it had been! His mind recalled those long miles of utter waste he had driven over, with head bowed, breathing the stifling dust. He was powdered with it still from head to foot, and his lips were caked and dry. It was like a journey through the shadow of death. Book Comrades

  • Author : Harry Fisher
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 1999-08-01
  • ISBN : 9780803268999
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Comrades written by Harry Fisher and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-08-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Civil War served as an ideological and physical battleground for visionary Americans wishing to combat the spread of fascism. Harry Fisher was one such idealist who became a solider in the famed Abraham Lincoln Brigade, the American contingent of international volunteers dedicated to defeating Franco's forces. ø Fisher was one of the earliest American volunteers and one of the few to participate in all the major battles. Under a barrage of shells, bombs, and bullets for eighteen months, he lost his illusions about war's efficacy in solving political issues. To this day a despondence often overwhelms him when he recalls a family photograph he found jutting from the pocket of a slain fascist soldier. His involvement taught him that up close, the dead, whether fascist soldiers or his own fallen comrades, looked alike. ø This is a war story, simply told. Yet it is also a complex story about a young man testing his ideology in the harsh realities of battle.

Book Comrades

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen E. Ambrose
  • Publisher : Simon & Schuster
  • Release : 2000-09-07
  • ISBN : 9780743200745
  • Pages : 152 pages

Download or read book Comrades written by Stephen E. Ambrose and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2000-09-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Undaunted Courage and D-Day comes this celebration of male friendship, taken both from the pages of history and from Ambrose’s own life. Acclaimed historian Stephen Ambrose begins his examination with a glance inward—he starts this book with his brothers, his first and forever friends, and the shared experiences that join them for a lifetime, overcoming distance and misunderstandings. He writes of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had a golden gift for friendship and who shared a perfect trust with his younger brother Milton in spite of their apparently unequal stations. With great feeling, Ambrose brings to life the relationships of the young soldiers of Easy Company who fought and died together from Normandy to Germany, and he describes with admiration three who fought in different armies on different sides in that war and became friends later. He recounts the friendships of Lewis and Clark and of Crazy Horse and He Dog, and he tells the story of the Custer brothers who died together at the Little Big Horn. Comrades concludes with the author’s moving recollection of his own friendship with his father. “He was my first and always most important friend. I didn’t learn that until the end, when he taught me the most important thing, that the love of father-son-father-son is a continuum, just as love and friendship are expansive.”

Book Trails of Yesterday

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Bratt
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 1980-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780803260559
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Trails of Yesterday written by John Bratt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trails of Yesterday, first published in 1921, is ranked with the best firsthand accounts of ranching on the northern Great Plains in the 1870s and 1880s. This classic of cow-country literature is rich in authentic frontier history. Born in England in 1842, John Bratt came to America when he was twenty-two, and in 1866 he joined a wagon train traveling from Nebraska City to Fort Phil Kearny. Bratt gives a vivid view of the country along the Great Platte River Road, reporting on the condition of the trail, meetings with Indians such as Dull Knife, and encounters with buffalo herds. There are splendid descriptions of the few forts then protecting the long trail—Forts Kearny, McPherson, Mitchell, and Sedgwick—and of the road ranches of John Burke and the notorious Jack Morrow, among others. Bratt was a cattle rancher for more than two decades and was instrumental in the settlement of North Platte, Nebraska.
