Book Mathematical Modelling and Computers in Endocrinology

Download or read book Mathematical Modelling and Computers in Endocrinology written by Rosalind McIntosh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The building of conceptual models is an inherent part of our interaction with the world, and the foundation of scientific investigation. Scientists often perform the processes of modelling subconsciously, unaware of the scope and significance of this activity, and the techniques available to assist in the description and testing of their ideas. Mathematics has three important contributions to make in biological modelling: (1) it provides unambiguous languages for expressing relationships at both qualitative and quantitative levels of observation; (2) it allows effective analysis and prediction of model behaviour, and can thereby organize experimental effort productively; (3) it offers rigorous methods of testing hypotheses by comparing models with experimental data; by providing a means of objectively excluding unsuitable concepts, the development of ideas is given a sound experimental basis. Many modern mathematical techniques can be exploited only with the aid of computers. These machines not only provide increased speed and accuracy in determining the consequences of model assumptions, but also greatly extend the range of problems which can be explored. The impact of computers in the biological sciences has been widespread and revolutionary, and will continue to be so.

Internationally-renowned experts have brought together evidence, guidelines and their clinical expertise to put trustworthy support at your fingertips. The vast spectrum of endocrine disorders are clearly laid out in self-contained topics for easy reference. Chapters build bridges between pathogenesis, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis and investigation to aid understanding. Careful consideration is given to establishing a diagnosis including the recognition, investigation and management of the rarer diagnoses. The practical treatment of everyday endocrine disorders and the management of life-long conditions are outlined in clear protocols. Chapters are organised by endocrine glands, disorders and syndromes and there are sections on the involvement of hormones in other specialities including endocrine oncology. The continuity from childhood to adolescent and adult endocrinology as well as the needs of older patients is explored in specific sections. Dedicated chapters cover the important roles endocrine specialist nurses play in patient management, and dietetic advice. The editors have included a wealth of practical resources including: · A speedy reference section, which provides summaries and quick direction · A patient advice and reference section, which supports face-to-face discussion with patients · A medicolegal chapter, which outlines risk and DVLA regulations Oxford Desk Reference: Endocrinology is the ideal companion for consultants, registrars associate specialists and clinical assistants as well as those from other disciplines who share endocrine clinics including endocrine surgeons, oncologists, gynaecologists and paediatricians.

Book excerpt: The endocrine system is an efficient means of controlling, via hormones, large numbers of cells at many different sites in the body and it is the most important factor in the control of the basic processes of the individual, such as metabolism, growth and reproduction. _ Human Endocrinology is a concise lucid explanation of how hormones are secreted by various glands into the blood and dispersed to cells within the body. Each hormone group is described in a separate chapter dealing with the factors affecting the hormones secretion and the use of particular hormones in the treatment of disease. _ Disorders of the endocrine system, such as diabetes and some forms of dwarfism and the use of hormones in medicine (such as oral contraceptives) are covered. The illegal use of hormonal drugs, for example anabolic steroids, in sport is also discussed. _ The author's accessible style and extensive use of figures and tables make this a valuable text for all students studying the subject as part of many bioscience courses including medicine, nursing, physiology, pharmacy pharmacology and biomedical science.
