Book The Oxford History of English Lexicography

Download or read book The Oxford History of English Lexicography written by A. P. Cowie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-12-04 with total page 1017 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These substantial volumes present the fullest account yet published of the lexicography of English from its origins in medieval glosses, through its rapid development in the eighteenth century, to a fully-established high-tech industry that is as reliant as ever on learning and scholarship. The history covers dictionaries of English and its national varieties, including American English, with numerous references to developments in Europe and elsewhere which have influenced the course of English lexicography. Part one of Volume I explores the early development of glosses and bilingual and multilingual dictionaries and examines their influence on lexicographical methods and ideas. Part two presents a systematic history of monolingual dictionaries of English and includes extensive chapters on Johnson, Webster and his successors in the USA, and the OED. It also contains descriptions of the development of dictionaries of national and regional varieties, and of Old and Middle English, and concludes with an account of the computerization of the OED. The specialized dictionaries described in Volume II include dictionaries of science, dialects, synonyms, etymology, pronunciation, slang and cant, quotations, phraseology, and personal and place names. This volume also includes an account of the inception and development of dictionaries developed for particular users, especially foreign learners of English. The Oxford History of English Lexicography unites scholarship with readability. It provides a unique and accessible reference for scholars and professional lexicographers and offers a series of fascinating encounters with the men and women involved over the centuries in the making of works of profound national and linguistic importance.

Book The Making of the Oxford English Dictionary

Download or read book The Making of the Oxford English Dictionary written by Peter Gilliver and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the history of the Oxford English Dictionary from its beginnings in the middle of the nineteenth century to the present. The author, uniquely among historians of the OED, is also a practising lexicographer with nearly thirty years' experience of working on the Dictionary. He has drawn on a wide range of sources-including previously unexamined archival material and eyewitness testimony-to create a detailed history of the project. The book explores the cultural background from which the idea of a comprehensive historical dictionary of English emerged, the lengthy struggles to bring this concept to fruition, and the development of the book from the appearance of the first printed fascicle in 1884 to the launching of the Dictionary as an online database in 2000 and beyond. It also examines the evolution of the lexicographers' working methods, and provides much information about the people-many of them remarkable individuals-who have contributed to the project over the last century and a half.

Book The Humanities Computing Yearbook 1989 1990

Download or read book The Humanities Computing Yearbook 1989 1990 written by Ian Lancashire and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second in a series of comprehensive annual reference guides to the use of computers in all the disciplines of the humanities. Like its predecessor, this volume provides a taxonomy of the field and an annotated survey of publications, research centers, text archives and termbanks, electronic communications, software, and hardware relevant to the humanities. It also includes special larger entries for important software that offer up-to-date information, and practical help in applying that information to research projects and instruction in colleges and universities. For the 1989-1990 edition, Lancashire has, for the first time, appointed an international advisory board of specialists to assist in discovering, assembling, and evaluating materials for inclusion; and, to keep up with the rapidly developing nature of the field and its international constituency, Lancashire has included many completely new or revised sections, including a major new chapter on computing in Law. A monumental work of current and enduring value, The Humanities Computing Yearbook will prove invaluable to a wide range of students, teachers, and researchers in humanities and social sciences, computational linguistics, and related fields in computer science.

Book Dictionary of Lexicography

Download or read book Dictionary of Lexicography written by R. R. K. Hartmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dictionaries are among the most frequently consulted books, yet we know remarkably little about them. Who makes them? Where do they come from? What do they offer? How can we evaluate them? The Dictionary of Lexicography provides answers to all these questions and addresses a wide range of issues: * the traditions of dictionary-making * the different types of dictionaries and other reference works (such as thesaurus, encyclopedia, atlas and telephone directory) * the principles and concerns of lexicographers and other reference professionals * the standards of dictionary criticism and dictionary use. It is both a professional handbook and an easy-to-use reference work. This is the first time that the subject has been covered in such a comprehensive manner in the form of a reference book. All articles are self-contained, cross-referenced and uniformly structured. The whole is an up-to-date and forward-looking survey of lexicography.

Download or read book Empire of Words written by John Willinsky and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1994-10-31 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the meaning of a word? Most readers turn to the dictionary for authoritative meanings and correct usage. But what is the source of authority in dictionaries? Some dictionaries employ panels of experts to fix meaning and prescribe usage, others rely on derivation through etymology. But perhaps no other dictionary has done more to standardize the English language than the formidable twenty-volume Oxford English Dictionary in its 1989 second edition. Yet this most Victorian of modern dictionaries derives its meaning by citing the earliest known usage of words and by demonstrating shades of meaning through an awesome database of over five million examples of usage in context. In this fascinating study, John Willinsky challenges the authority of this imperial dictionary, revealing many of its inherent prejudices and questioning the assumptions of its ongoing revision. "Clearly, the OED is no simple record of the language `as she is spoke,'" Willinsky writes. "It is a selective representation reflecting certain elusive ideas about the nature of the English language and people. Empire of Words reveals, by statistic and table, incident and anecdote, how serendipitous, judgmental, and telling a task editing a dictionary such as the OED can be." Willinsky analyzes the favored citation records from the three editorial periods of the OED's compilation: the Victorian, imperial first edition; the modern supplement; and the contemporary second edition composed on an electronic database. He reveals shifts in linguistic authority: the original edition relied on English literature and, surprisingly, on translations, reference works, and journalism; the modern editions have shifted emphasis to American sources and periodicals while continuing to neglect women, workers, and other English-speaking countries. Willinsky's dissection of dictionary entries exposes contradictions and ambiguities in the move from citation to definition. He points out that Shakespeare, the most frequently cited authority in the OED, often confounds the dictionary's simple sense of meaning with his wit and artfulness. He shows us how the most famous four-letter words in the language found their way through a belabored editorial process, sweating and grunting, into the supplement to the OED. Willinsky sheds considerable light on how the OED continues to shape the English language through the sometimes idiosyncratic, often biased selection of citations by hired readers and impassioned friends of the language. Anyone who is fascinated with words and language will find Willinsky's tour through the OED a delightful and stimulating experience. No one who reads this book will ever feel quite the same about Murray's web of words.

Book Theoretical Issues in Natural Language Processing

Download or read book Theoretical Issues in Natural Language Processing written by Yorick Wilks and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accompanying continued industrial production and sales of artificial intelligence and expert systems is the risk that difficult and resistant theoretical problems and issues will be ignored. The participants at the Third Tinlap Workshop, whose contributions are contained in Theoretical Issues in Natural Language Processing, remove that risk. They discuss and promote theoretical research on natural language processing, examinations of solutions to current problems, development of new theories, and representations of published literature on the subject. Discussions among these theoreticians in artificial intelligence, logic, psychology, philosophy, and linguistics draw a comprehensive, up-to-date picture of the natural language processing field.
