Book Stochastic Processes in Demography and Their Computer Implementation

Download or read book Stochastic Processes in Demography and Their Computer Implementation written by C.J. Mode and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to a recent report of the United States Census Bureau, world population as of June 30, 1983, was estimated at about 4. 7 billion people; of this total, an estimated 82 million had been added in the previous year. World population in 1950 was estimated at about 2. 5 billion; consequently, if 82 million poeple are added to the world population in each of the coming four years, population size will be double that of 1950. Another way of viewing the yearly increase in world population is to compare it to 234 million, the estimated current population of the United States. If the excess of births over deaths continues, a group of young people equivalent to the population of the United States will be added to the world population about every 2. 85 years. Although the rate of increase in world population has slowed since the midsixties, it seems likely that large numbers of infants will be added to the population each year for the foreseeable future. A large current world population together with a high likelihood of sub stantial increments in size every year has prompted public and scholarly recognition of population as a practical problem. Tangible evidence in the public domain that population is being increasingly viewed as a problem is provided by the fact that many governments around the world either have or plan to implement policies regarding population. Evidence of scholarly concern is provided by an increasing flow of publications dealing with population.

Book Computer Architecture and Implementation

Download or read book Computer Architecture and Implementation written by Harvey G. Cragon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-02-13 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a clear and concise introduction to computer architecture and implementation. Two important themes are interwoven throughout the book. The first is an overview of the major concepts and design philosophies of computer architecture and organization. The second is the early introduction and use of analytic modeling of computer performance. A unique feature of the book is that memory systems are discussed before processor implementations. Book 3D Nanoelectronic Computer Architecture and Implementation

Download or read book 3D Nanoelectronic Computer Architecture and Implementation written by David Crawley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is becoming increasingly clear that the two-dimensional layout of devices on computer chips hinders the development of high-performance computer systems. Three-dimensional structures will be needed to provide the performance required to implement computationally intensive tasks. 3-D Nanoelectronic Computer Architecture and Implementation reviews the state of the art in nanoelectronic device design and fabrication and discusses the architectural aspects of 3-D designs, including the possible use of molecular wiring and carbon nanotube interconnections. This is a valuable reference for those involved in the design and development of nanoelectronic devices and technology.

Book The History of the Implementation of the Library Computer System LCS at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

Download or read book The History of the Implementation of the Library Computer System LCS at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign written by Leigh Kimmel and published by Starship Cat Press. This book was released on with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally the author's thesis for a master's degree at Illinois State University, this work examines the history fo library automation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from the earliest beginnings through the implementation of the Library Computer System (LCS) under the leadership of Hugh Atkinson to the creation of the ILLINET Online (IO) system. All of the chainges are studied in teh contest of the Illinois Board of Higher education (IBHE) mandate for library resource sharing throughout Illinois' academic libraries to reduce expenditures while maintaining quality scholarship and education, and of the effects these changes had on library services to the user population. The process of implementing LCS is studied to show the way in which the library administration handled the various crises as they arose and what effects these decisions had on the long-term structure of the system. Following implementation, it continues to study the subsequent developments of the online computer system to increase service to the library's users. In addition, three doctoral dissertation are examined which used LCS as a research tool for the study of collection and use patterns in academic libraries. Finally, the author examines the results of automation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the context of the academic community and the state of Illinois at large, and draws conclusions from them.

Book PDE Models for Atherosclerosis Computer Implementation in R

Download or read book PDE Models for Atherosclerosis Computer Implementation in R written by William E. Schiesser and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atherosclerosis is a pathological condition of the arteries in which plaque buildup and stiffening (hardening) can lead to stroke, myocardial infarction (heart attacks), and even death. Cholesterol in the blood is a key marker for atherosclerosis, with two forms: (1) LDL - low density lipoproteins and (2) HDL - high density lipoproteins. Low LDL and high HDL concentrations are generally considered essential for limited atherosclerosis and good health. This book pertains to a mathematical model for the spatiotemporal distribution of LDL and HDL in the arterial endothelial inner layer (EIL, intima). The model consists of a system of six partial differential equations (PDEs) with the dependent variables 1. (,): concentration of modified LDL 2. h(,): concentration of HDL 3. (,): concentration of chemoattractants 4. (,): concentration of ES cytokines 5. (,): density of monocytes/macrophages 6. (,): density of foam cells and independent variables 1. : distance from the inner arterial wall 2. : time The focus of this book is a discussion of the methodology for placing the model on modest computers for study of the numerical solutions. The foam cell density (,) as a function of the bloodstream LDL and HDL concentrations is of particular interest as a precursor for arterial plaque formation and stiffening. The numerical algorithm for the solution of the model PDEs is the method of lines (MOL), a general procedure for the computer-based numerical solution of PDEs. The MOL coding (programming) is in R, a quality, open-source scientific computing system that is readily available from the Internet. The R routines for the PDE model are discussed in detail, and are available from a download link so that the reader/analyst/researcher can execute the model to duplicate the solutions reported in the book, then experiment with the model, for example, by changing the parameters (constants) and extending the model with additional equations. /div
