Book Computer Aided Interval Change Analysis of Microcalifications on Management for Breast Cancer Detection

Download or read book Computer Aided Interval Change Analysis of Microcalifications on Management for Breast Cancer Detection written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this project is to develop a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for automatic interval change analysis of microcalcification clusters on mammograms. Based on our regional registration method and a search program cluster candidates were detected within the local area on the prior. The cluster on the current image is then paired with the candi-dates to form true (TP-TP) or false (TP-FP) pairs and a correspondence classifier is designed to reduce the (TP-FP). A temporal classifier (TC) based on current and prior information is used if a cluster is detected in the prior, and a current classifier (CurC) based on current information alone is used if no prior cluster is detected. For the TC an LDA, SVM and NN were used. 175 temporal pairs of mammograms were used for evaluation. The registration stage identified 85% (1491175) of the TP-TP pairs with 15 false matches within the 164 image pairs that had detected clusters. The TC based on LDA, SVM and NN achieved a test Az of 0.83, 0.82, 0.84, respectively, for the 164 pairs for classifying the clusters as malignant or benign. For the II clusters without detection on the prior, the test Az by the CurC was 0.72. Four radiologists participated in pilot observer study using our CAD. The average Az in estimating the likelihood of malignancy was 0.70 without CAD and improved to 0.77 with CAD(p=O.04).

Book excerpt: The goal of this project is to develop a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for automatic interval change analysis of microcalcification clusters on mammograms. Based on our regional registration method a local area on the prior that may contain the corresponding cluster is determined. A search program is used to detect cluster candidates within the local area. The cluster on the current image is then paired with the candidates to form true (TP-TP) or false (TP-FP) pairs. A correspondence classifier (CC) using automatically extracted features is designed to reduce the false pairs. A temporal classifier (TC) based on current and prior information is used if a cluster is detected in the prior, and a current classifier (CurC) based on current information alone is used if no prior cluster is detected. 175 temporal pairs of mammograms were used for evaluation. The search program detected 90.2% of the clusters on the priors with an average of 0.43 FPs/image. The CC identified 85% (l49/175) of the TP-TP pairs with 15 false matches within the 164 image pairs that had detected clusters. The TC achieved a test Az of 0.83 for the 164 pairs for classifying the clusters as malignant or benign. For the 11 clusters without detection on the prior, the test Az by the CurC was 0.72. The radiologist achieved an Az of 0.72 for both the 175 and the 164 temporal pairs.

Book Analysis of Interval Changes on Mammograms for Computer Aided Diagnosis

Download or read book Analysis of Interval Changes on Mammograms for Computer Aided Diagnosis written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to develop a novel technique for computerized analysis of temporal differences between the most recent and previous mammograms of the same view in order to evaluate the usefulness of using interval change to distinguish between normal structures, benign masses, and malignant masses in computer-aided diagnosis (CAD). During this year, we have developed a multistage regional registration technique that combines global and local alignment procedures for identifying masses on temporal pairs of mammograms. In the first stage, the breast images from the current and previous mammograms were globally aligned by maximizing a mutual information measure. In the second stage a fan-shape search region based on polar coordinates was estimated on the previous mammogram. In the third stage a search for the best match between the lesion template from the current mammogram and a structure on the previous mammogram was carried out within the fan-shape region. We found that in 85% of the cases the corresponding regions on the previous and current mammogram were correctly identified. This technique can be useful for identification of corresponding lesions on temporal pairs of mammograms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1998 the Fourth International Workshop on Digital Mammography was held in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, where it was hosted by the department of Radiology of the University Hospital Nijmegen. This series of meetings was initiated at the 1993 SPIE Biomedical Image Processing Conference in San Jose, USA, where a number of sessions were entirely devoted to mammographic image analysis. At very successful subsequent workshops held in York, UK (1994) and Chicago, USA (1996), the scope of the conference was broadened, establishing a platform for presentation and discussion of new developments in digital mammog raphy. Topics that are addressed at these meetings are computer-aided diagnosis, image processing, detector development, system design, observer performance and clinical evaluation. The goal is to bring researchers from universities, breast cancer experts, and engineers together, to exchange information and present new scientific developments in this rapidly evolving field. This book contains all the scientific papers and posters presented at the work shop in Nijmegen. Contributions came from as many as 20 different countries and 190 participants attended the meeting. At a technical exhibit companies demon strated new products and work in progress. Abstracts of all papers were reviewed by members of the scientific committee. Many of the accepted papers had excellent quality, but due to limited space not all of them could be included as full papers in these proceedings. Papers that were rated high by the reviewers are included as long or short papers, others appear as extended abstracts in the last chapter.

Book Detection of Breast Cancer Microcalcifications in Digitized Mammograms

Download or read book Detection of Breast Cancer Microcalcifications in Digitized Mammograms written by Husam E. I. Al-Osta and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammography is used to aid early detection and diagnosis systems. It takes an x-ray image of the breast and can provide a second opinion for radiologists. The earlier detection is made, the better treatment works. Digital mammograms are dealt with by Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems that can detect and analyze abnormalities in a mammogram. The purpose of this study is to investigate how to categories cropped regions of interest (ROI) from digital mammogram images into two classes; normal and abnormal regions (which contain microcalcifications). The work proposed in this thesis is divided into three stages to provide a concept system for classification between normal and abnormal cases. The first stage is the Segmentation Process, which applies thresholding filters to separate the abnormal objects (foreground) from the breast tissue (background). Moreover, this study has been carried out on mammogram images and mainly on cropped ROI images from different sizes that represent individual microcalcification and ROI that represent a cluster of microcalcifications. The second stage in this thesis is feature extraction. This stage makes use of the segmented ROI images to extract characteristic features that would help in identifying regions of interest. The wavelet transform has been utilized for this process as it provides a variety of features that could be examined in future studies. The third and final stage is classification, where machine learning is applied to be able to distinguish between normal ROI images and ROI images that may contain microcalcifications. The result indicated was that by combining wavelet transform and SVM we can distinguish between regions with normal breast tissue and regions that include microcalcifications.

Book Toward Automated Detection and Diagnosis of Mammographic Microcalcifications

Download or read book Toward Automated Detection and Diagnosis of Mammographic Microcalcifications written by Imad Mohammad Zyout and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammographic diagnosis is the most effective technique to detect breast cancer in its infancy when it is most responsive to treatment. An early and a significant indicator of breast cancer is the presence of clustered microcalcifications (MVCs). Mammographic MCs greatly vary in their appearance and shape, and become indistinguishable when surrounded by dense breast tissue. This makes the radiologist's interpretation of mammograms a tedious and an error prone task. Although computer aided diagnosis (CAD) methods are being developed to aid radiologists in detecting and analyzing the malignancy of MCs, existing systems have not achieved a satisfactory performance. The specificity of existing methods is low compared to a radiologist's interpretation. Therefore, there is a need for exploring new detection methods and developing automated, robust feature extraction and selection techniques that support the diagnosis process. To address these needs, a detection framework that employs a pattern-synthesizing process along with statistical and spectral characterization of mammograms is proposed. A trained statistical Bayesian classifier using synthetic MCs will be used to classify anonymous input patterns into a background of microcalcification classes. Morpological image processing is also proposed in this dissertation to segment and characterize the shape and the distribution of MCs. Automated nested subsets feature selection method and heuristic search method are investigated via a full model selection using PSO-SVM framework. Furthermore, a new approach to extract texture features of MCs using a multiscale Hessian image analysis is developed and tested. The detection and diagnosis schemes developed in this dissertation are tested using mammograms from the Mammographic Image Analysis Society (MIAS) database and compared to other existing methods. The results indicate that the performance of the detection scheme is adequate while the performance of the shape-based diagnosis of MCs scheme is superior and very promising.

Book Improving Breast Imaging Quality Standards

Download or read book Improving Breast Imaging Quality Standards written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-09-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammography is an important tool for detecting breast cancer at an early stage. When coupled with appropriate treatment, early detection can reduce breast cancer mortality. At the request of Congress, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioned a study to examine the current practice of mammography and breast cancer detection, with a focus on the FDA's oversight via the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), to identify areas in need of improvement. Enacted in 1993, MQSA provides a general framework for ensuring national quality standards in facilities performing screening mammography, requires that each mammography facility be accredited and certified, and mandates that facilities will undergo annual inspections. This book recommends strategies for achieving continued progress in assuring mammography quality, including changes to MQSA regulation, as well as approaches that do not fall within the purview of MQSA. Specifically, this book provides recommendations aimed at improving mammography interpretation; revising MQSA regulations, inspections, and enforcement; ensuring an adequate workforce for breast cancer screening and diagnosis; and improving breast imaging quality beyond mammography.

Download or read book Mammography and Beyond written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-04 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray mammography screening is the current mainstay for early breast cancer detection. It has been proven to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage and to reduce the number of women dying from the disease. However, it has a number of limitations. These current limitations in early breast cancer detection technology are driving a surge of new technological developments, from modifications of x-ray mammography such as computer programs that can indicate suspicious areas, to newer methods of detection such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or biochemical tests on breast fluids. To explore the merits and drawbacks of these new breast cancer detection techniques, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences convened a committee of experts. During its year of operation, the committee examined the peer-reviewed literature, consulted with other experts in the field, and held two public workshops. In addition to identifying promising new technologies for early detection, the committee explored potential barriers that might prevent the development of new detection methods and their common usage. Such barriers could include lack of funding from agencies that support research and lack of investment in the commercial sector; complicated, inconsistent, or unpredictable federal regulations; inadequate insurance reimbursement; and limited access to or unacceptability of breast cancer detection technology for women and their doctors. Based on the findings of their study, the committee prepared a report entitled Mammography and Beyond: Developing Technology for Early Detection of Breast Cancer, which was published in the spring of 2001. This is a non-technical summary of that report.

Book Digital Breast Tomosynthesis

Download or read book Digital Breast Tomosynthesis written by Alberto Tagliafico and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of the screening and clinical applications of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and offers straightforward, clear guidance on use of the technique. Informative clinical cases are presented to illustrate how to take advantage of DBT in clinical practice. The importance of DBT as a diagnostic tool for both screening and diagnosis is increasing rapidly. DBT improves upon mammography by depicting breast tissue on a video clip made of cross‐sectional images reconstructed in correspondence with their mammographic planes of acquisition. DBT results in markedly reduced summation of overlapping breast tissue and offers the potential to improve mammographic breast cancer surveillance and diagnosis. This book will be an excellent practical teaching guide for beginners and a useful reference for more experienced radiologists.
