This book was released on 1999-11-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains updated, reviewed versions of the best papers on “Modelling Coastal Sea Processes” presented at the International Ocean and Atmosphere Pacific Conference, held in Adelaide, South Australia, on 23-27 October 1995. The articles were selected on both scientific merit and usefulness to coastal engineers, physical oceanographers and marine biologists. They cover a range of topics including the modelling of tides and storm surges (especially inundation due to surges), the analysis of modelled or recorded data to permit prediction of tide heights over tidal flats and tidal currents in the presence of coastal eddies, and the modelling of dispersion of fish larvae from spawning grounds to coastal nurseries. Computational techniques are emphasised in line with modern applications, but some analytical techniques have also been included.

Book Advances in Software Tools for Scientific Computing

Download or read book Advances in Software Tools for Scientific Computing written by Hans P. Langtangen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To make full use of the ever increasing hardware capabilities of modern com puters, it is necessary to speedily enhance the performance and reliability of the software as well, and often without having a suitable mathematical theory readily available. In the handling of more and more complex real-life numerical problems in all sorts of applications, a modern object-oriented de sign and implementation of software tools has become a crucial component. The considerable challenges posed by the demand for efficient object-oriented software in all areas of scientific computing make it necessary to exchange ideas and experiences from as many different sources as possible. Motivated by the success of the first meeting of this kind in Norway in 1996, we decided to organize another International Workshop on Modern Software Tools for Scientific Computing, often referred to as SciTools'98. This workshop took place in Oslo, Norway, September 14-16, 1998. The ob jective was again to provide an open forum for exchange and discussion of modern, state-of-the-art software techniques applied to challenging numerical problems. The organization was undertaken jointly by the research institute SINTEF Applied Mathematics, the Departments of Mathematics and Infor matics at the University of Oslo, and the company Numerical Objects AS.

Book Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Partial Differential Equations written by D. Sloan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: /homepage/sac/cam/na2000/index.html7-Volume Set now available at special set price ! Over the second half of the 20th century the subject area loosely referred to as numerical analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs) has undergone unprecedented development. At its practical end, the vigorous growth and steady diversification of the field were stimulated by the demand for accurate and reliable tools for computational modelling in physical sciences and engineering, and by the rapid development of computer hardware and architecture. At the more theoretical end, the analytical insight into the underlying stability and accuracy properties of computational algorithms for PDEs was deepened by building upon recent progress in mathematical analysis and in the theory of PDEs. To embark on a comprehensive review of the field of numerical analysis of partial differential equations within a single volume of this journal would have been an impossible task. Indeed, the 16 contributions included here, by some of the foremost world authorities in the subject, represent only a small sample of the major developments. We hope that these articles will, nevertheless, provide the reader with a stimulating glimpse into this diverse, exciting and important field. The opening paper by Thomée reviews the history of numerical analysis of PDEs, starting with the 1928 paper by Courant, Friedrichs and Lewy on the solution of problems of mathematical physics by means of finite differences. This excellent survey takes the reader through the development of finite differences for elliptic problems from the 1930s, and the intense study of finite differences for general initial value problems during the 1950s and 1960s. The formulation of the concept of stability is explored in the Lax equivalence theorem and the Kreiss matrix lemmas. Reference is made to the introduction of the finite element method by structural engineers, and a description is given of the subsequent development and mathematical analysis of the finite element method with piecewise polynomial approximating functions. The penultimate section of Thomée's survey deals with `other classes of approximation methods', and this covers methods such as collocation methods, spectral methods, finite volume methods and boundary integral methods. The final section is devoted to numerical linear algebra for elliptic problems. The next three papers, by Bialecki and Fairweather, Hesthaven and Gottlieb and Dahmen, describe, respectively, spline collocation methods, spectral methods and wavelet methods. The work by Bialecki and Fairweather is a comprehensive overview of orthogonal spline collocation from its first appearance to the latest mathematical developments and applications. The emphasis throughout is on problems in two space dimensions. The paper by Hesthaven and Gottlieb presents a review of Fourier and Chebyshev pseudospectral methods for the solution of hyperbolic PDEs. Particular emphasis is placed on the treatment of boundaries, stability of time discretisations, treatment of non-smooth solutions and multidomain techniques. The paper gives a clear view of the advances that have been made over the last decade in solving hyperbolic problems by means of spectral methods, but it shows that many critical issues remain open. The paper by Dahmen reviews the recent rapid growth in the use of wavelet methods for PDEs. The author focuses on the use of adaptivity, where significant successes have recently been achieved. He describes the potential weaknesses of wavelet methods as well as the perceived strengths, thus giving a balanced view that should encourage the study of wavelet methods.

Book Introduction to Parallel Computing

Download or read book Introduction to Parallel Computing written by Wesley Petersen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-01-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, courses on parallel computation have been developed and offered in many institutions in the UK, Europe and US as a recognition of the growing significance of this topic in mathematics and computer science. There is a clear need for texts that meet the needs of students and lecturers and this book, based on the author's lecture at ETH Zurich, is an ideal practical student guide to scientific computing on parallel computers working up from a hardware instruction level, to shared memory machines, and finally to distributed memory machines. Aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students in applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering, subjects covered include linear algebra, fast Fourier transform, and Monte-Carlo simulations, including examples in C and, in some cases, Fortran. This book is also ideal for practitioners and programmers.

Book Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 In 2 Volumes

Download or read book Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 In 2 Volumes written by Mohamed M Hafez and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-11-20 with total page 1169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of CFD Review was published in 1995. The purpose of this new publication is to present comprehensive surveys and review articles which provide up-to-date information about recent progress in computational fluid dynamics, on a regular basis. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of CFD, it is difficult to cope with all the important developments in related areas. There are at least ten regular international conferences dealing with different aspects of CFD.It is a real challenge to keep up with all these activities and to be aware of essential and fundamental contributions in these areas. It is hoped that CFD Review will help in this regard by covering the state-of-the-art in this field. The present book contains sixty-two articles written by authors from the US, Europe, Japan and China, covering the main aspects of CFD. There are five sections: general topics, numerical methods, flow physics, interdisciplinary applications, parallel computation and flow visualization. The section on numerical methods includes grids, schemes and solvers, while that on flow physics includes incompressible and compressible flows, hypersonics and gas kinetics as well as transition and turbulence. This book should be useful to all researchers in this fast-developing field.
