Book Computational Imaging Through Atmospheric Turbulence

Download or read book Computational Imaging Through Atmospheric Turbulence written by Stanley H. Chan and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the seminal work of Andrey Kolmogorov in the early 19400́9s, imaging through atmospheric turbulence has grown from a pure scientific pursuit to an important subject across a multitude of civilian, space-mission, and national security applications. Fueled by the recent advancement of deep learning, the field is further experiencing a new wave of momentum. However, for these deep learning methods to perform well, new efforts are needed to build faster and more accurate computational models while at the same time maximizing the performance of image reconstruction. The goal of this book is to present the basic concepts of turbulence physics while accomplishing the goal of image reconstruction. Starting with an exploration of optical modeling and computational imaging in Chapter 1, the book continues to Chapter 2, discussing the essential optical foundations required for the subsequent chapters. Chapter 3 introduces a statistical model elucidating atmospheric conditions and the propagation of waves through it. The practical implementation of the Zernike-based simulation is discussed in Chapter 4, paving the way for the machine learning solutions to reconstruction in Chapter 5. In this concluding chapter, classical and contemporary trends in turbulence mitigation are discussed, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the field's evolution and a sense of its direction. The book is written primarily for image processing engineers, computer vision scientists, and engineering students who are interested in the field of atmospheric turbulence, statistical optics, and image processing. The book can be used as a graduate text, or advanced topic classes for undergraduates.

Book Novel Methods in Computational Imaging with Applications in Remote Sensing

Download or read book Novel Methods in Computational Imaging with Applications in Remote Sensing written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : This dissertation is devoted to novel computational imaging methods with applications in remote sensing. Computational imaging methods are applied to three distinct applications including imaging and detection of buried explosive hazards utilizing array radar, high resolution imaging of satellites in geosynchronous orbit utilizing optical hypertelescope arrays, and characterization of atmospheric turbulence through multi-frame blind deconvolution utilizing conventional optical digital sensors. The first application considered utilizes a radar array employed as a forward looking ground penetrating radar system with applications in explosive hazard detection. A penalized least squares technique with sparsity-inducing regularization is applied to produce imagery, which is consistent with the expectation that objects are sparsely populated but extended with respect to the pixel grid. Additionally, a series of pre-processing steps is demonstrated which result in a greatly reduced data size and computational cost. Demonstrations of the approach are provided using experimental data and results are given in terms of signal to background ratio, image resolution, and relative computation time. The second application involves a sparse-aperture telescope array configured as a hypertelescope with applications in long range imaging. The penalized least squares technique with sparsity-inducing regularization is adapted and applied to this very different imaging modality. A comprehensive study of the algorithm tuning parameters is performed and performance is characterized using the Structure Similarity Metric (SSIM) to maximize image quality. Simulated measurements are used to show that imaging performance achieved using the pro- posed algorithm compares favorably in comparison to conventional Richardson-Lucy deconvolution. The third application involves a multi-frame collection from a conventional digital sensor with the primary objective of characterizing the atmospheric turbulence in the medium of propagation. In this application a joint estimate of the image is obtained along with the Zernike coefficients associated with the atmospheric PSF at each frame, and the Fried parameter r0 of the atmosphere. A pair of constraints are applied to a penalized least squares objective function to enforce the theoretical statistics of the set of PSF estimates as a function of r0. Results of the approach are shown with both simulated and experimental data and demonstrate excellent agreement between the estimated r0 values and the known or measured r0 values respectively.

Book Superresolution Imaging Through Atmospheric Turbulence

Download or read book Superresolution Imaging Through Atmospheric Turbulence written by David Roderick Gerwe and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The angular resolution of an imaging system is ultimately limited by diffraction effects related to the size of the image pupil once imperfections such as aberrations in the optical surfaces, grainy film, and noisy electronics have been eliminated. However, because of scatterings by turbulence, aerosols, and other inhomogeneities, the atmosphere diminishes the spatial coherence of propagating radiation and reduces the achievable resolution. Improving our ability to see through the atmosphere is of unmeasurable usefulness in astronomy, satellite imaging, remote detection, and all other areas in which high-resolution is desirable.

Book Machine Learning Enabled Prediction of Atmospheric Optical Turbulence from No reference Imaging

Download or read book Machine Learning Enabled Prediction of Atmospheric Optical Turbulence from No reference Imaging written by Skyler P. Schork and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser based communication and weapons systems are integral to maintaining the operational readiness and dominance of our Navy. Perhaps one of the most intransigent obstacles for such systems is the atmosphere. This is particularly true in the near-maritime environment. Atmospheric turbulence perturbs the propagation of laser beams as they are subject to fluctuations in the refractive index of air. As the beams travel through the atmosphere there is loss of irradiance on target, beam spread, beam wander, and intensity fluctuations of the propagating laser beam. The refractive index structure parameter, C2n, is a measure of the intensity of the optical turbulence along a path. If C2n can be easily and efficiently determined in an operating environment, the prediction of laser performance will be greatly enhanced. The goal of this research is to use image quality features in combination with machine learning techniques to accurately predict the refractive index structure parameter, C2n. In order to construct a machine learning model for the refractive index structure parameter, a series of image quality features were evaluated. Seven image quality features were selected, and have been applied to an image dataset of 34,000 individual exposures. This dataset, along with independently measured C2n values from a scintillometer as the supervised variable, were then used to train a variety of machine learning models. The models of particular interest to this research are the Generalized Linear Model, the Bagged Decision Tree, the Boosted Decision Tree, as well as the Random Forest Model. While the quantity of available training data had a significant impact on model performance, the findings indicate that image quality can be used to assist in the prediction of C2n, and that the machine learning models outperform the linear model.
