Book excerpt: The development and scale up of cost effective carbon capture processes is of paramount importance to enable the widespread deployment of these technologies to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. Department of Energy initiated the Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative (CCSI) in 2011 with the goal of developing a computational toolset that would enable industry to more effectively identify, design, scale up, operate, and optimize promising concepts. The first half of the presentation will introduce the CCSI Toolset consisting of basic data submodels, steady-state and dynamic process models, process optimization and uncertainty quantification tools, an advanced dynamic process control framework, and high-resolution filtered computationalfluid- dynamics (CFD) submodels. The second half of the presentation will describe a high-fidelity model of a mesoporous silica supported, polyethylenimine (PEI)-impregnated solid sorbent for CO2 capture. The sorbent model includes a detailed treatment of transport and amine-CO2- H2O interactions based on quantum chemistry calculations. Using a Bayesian approach for uncertainty quantification, we calibrate the sorbent model to Thermogravimetric (TGA) data.

Book excerpt: ASC2 objective was to demonstrate, through pilot plant and operational validation, the feasibility of using alumina impregnated-amine solid sorbent as an option to efficiency improvements of carbon capture. A new ceramic support was developed (36% DEA son SMLU15/900°C-Alginate) with micro-structural characteristics to enhance CO2 capture capacity. In long-term lab tests, no degradation was detected in NOx presence, (performance decrease appears to be due to SO2). An analytical method for N-nitrosamine detection was developed. An effective mitigation measure could be to perform absorption in dry condition. 800Lt of prepared support were impregnated with DEA to produce 600 kg of sorbent. The capture capacity of those batches was much lower than expected, so two further batches (120kg/each) were prepared: one using ASC2- and other using a commercial support. Experimental results evidenced that the unit design influences the sorbents performance. Those data were used to develop a numerical model and to design (and built) four new units to improve heat transfer. The new plant was operated continuously 770h in fully automated mode. In order to avoid the nitrosamine formation, no steam as stripping gas in the sorbent regeneration step was employed. The average capture capacity was found around 16 gCO2/kgsorbent, vs. the value of 33 gCO2/kgsorbent measured in the laboratory in the same dry conditions. The difference in performance was due to sorbent degradation, probably caused by exposure to oxygen and moisture in the absorbers during more than a year before the test start. This capture capacity was maintained over the 140 cycles performed; showing no degradation with cycling. N-nitrosodiethanolamine was under detection limits. Process integration and optimization were developed. Efficiency penalties as low as 6.84 percentage points could be achieved. The size of a scaled-up fixed-bed capture system was obtained, and techno-economic analysis were performed.

The adsorption of CO[subscript 2] on the amine-grafted sorbents was measured by thermogravimetric method over a CO[subscript 2] partial pressure range of 8-101.3 kPa and a temperature range of 25-105 °C under atmospheric pressure. The optimal amine loaded SBA-15 adsorbent was examined for multi-cycle stability and adsorption/desorption kinetics. (2)The performance of structured bed and packed bed configurations for post-combustion CO[subscript 2] capture was evaluated using PEI impregnated SBA-15 adsorbent. The effect of adsorption temperature (25-90 °C), adsorption /desorption kinetics and multi-cycle stability was studied in both structured and packed bed configurations.

Book excerpt: Over loading of CO2 emission has been a severe environment problem and the fact of greenhouse issue has become a huge impact to our daily life. The largest and inevitable emission of CO2 gas is the coal-fired power plant, and the most commonly used CO2 capture sorbent is liquid amine. However, there are lots of inconvenience of using liquid amine including equipment corrosion, high regeneration energy and slow diffusion of the CO2 gas, which would cost the capture procedure a huge amount of expense. Nevertheless, the solid sorbent is in face of the issue that the capture capacities and SO2 resistance is really low. So in this research, the modified amine-functionalized solid sorbents for CO2 adsorption and SO2 resistance have been created. The problem of lower CO2 capture capacity was modified by double impregnation, and the issue of lower heat transfer rate was improved by adding heat transfer agent during pelletization. The characterization of the sorbent and pellets capture behavior was done by CO2 capture weight method and in-situ DRIFT spectra, and the SO2 resistance behavior has also been discussed with EDS mapping and quantification.

This assists in optimizing the CO.sub. 2 removal capacity of the amine-based solid sorbent for a given absorption and regeneration reactor size. Management of the water loading in this manner allows regeneration reactor operation with significant mitigation of energy losses incurred by the necessary desorption of adsorbed water.

Book excerpt: Post-combustion carbon capture is a viable option for reducing CO2 greenhouse gas emissions, and one potentially promising technology for this route is adsorption using chemically and physically based sorbents. A number of exceptional CO2 sorbents materials have been prepared including metal organic frameworks, zeolites, and carbon based materials. One particular group of capable materials are amine based solid sorbents that has shown to possess high adsorption capacities and favorable adsorption kinetics. A key variable in the synthesis of an amine based sorbent is the support which acts as the platform for the amine modification. Aerogels, due to their high porosities and surface areas, appear to be a promising support for an amine modified CO2 sorbent. Therefore, in order to develop a commercially viable CO2 sorbent, particulate aerogels manufactured by Cabot Corporation through an economical and proprietary ambient drying process were modified with amines using a variety of functionalization methods. Two methods of physical impregnation of the amino polymer TEPA were performed in order to observe the performance as well as understand the effects of how the TEPA distribution is affected by the method of introduction. Both samples showed excellent adsorption capacities but poor cyclic stability for lack of any covalent attachment. Furthermore the method of TEPA impregnation seems to be independent on how the polymer will be distributed in the pore space of aerogel. The last two methods utilized involved covalently attaching amino silanes to the surface silanols of the aerogel. One method was performed in the liquid phase under anhydrous and hydrous conditions. The materials developed through the hydrous method have much greater adsorption capacities relative to the anhydrous sample as a result of the greater amine content present in the hydrous sample. Water is another source of silylation where additional silanes can attach and polymerize. These samples also possessed stable cyclic stability after 100 adsorption/regeneration cycles. The other method of grafting was performed in the gas phase through ALD. These samples possessed exceptionally high amine efficiencies and levels of N content without damaging the microstructure of the aerogel in contrast to the liquid phase grafted sorbents.

A rate-based absorber model using aqueous piperazine (PZ) has been developed prior to this work. The model is built from bench-scale or small pilot-scale experiments using "bottom-up" strategies and can be improved by larger scale pilot plant experiments. Three pilot plant campaigns were designed and conducted in this work for model validation and improvement. By identifying the systematic bias of solvent equilibrium and applying one adjustable parameter on PZ concentration (8% for NCCC 2019 and SRP 2018, 3% for NCCC 2018), the model can predict the absorber number of transfer units (NTU) and temperature profile with good accuracy. The packing performance model was also validated using experiments running with less packing area that are away from mass transfer pinch. With pilot plant experiments and process modeling, the absorber design using pump-around absorber with hot flue gas inlet was demonstrated as a superior configuration for flue gas with 4% CO2. The pump-around increases the liquid flow and provides effective cooling to the absorber. This configuration was used to design the first-of-its-kind commercial scale absorber in west Texas. The design requires only 25 ft packing, eliminates direct contact cooler and trim cooler to reduce capital cost, and uses 0.2 lean loading, low pump-around temperature (30 °C), and high pump-around rate to improve the performance and to reduce the operating cost. The hybrid and crossflow absorbers were proposed and simulated as an intensification of the pump-around absorber. The hybrid absorber can be as effective as the pump-around absorber but is constrained by intercooling temperature and water balance. The crossflow absorber features small size and high velocity and is favored when the capital cost is relatively high. Achieving higher removal using amine scrubbing was studied using both PZ and MEA solvent, and the optimal CO2 removal was found above 90% (95% for coal and 93% for gas). Zero emission of power plant was feasible using amine scrubbing with an overall cost of 50.4 $/tonne and should be considered before deploying other direct air capture technologies
